The application of acidulated phosphate fluoride gel(APF) and fluoride varnishes are the most common topical fluoride therapy. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the remineralization effects of two topical fluoride agents, APF gel and fluoride varnish with microtomograph and 3D image analyzer without sample preparation and chemical fixation. For the purpose of the study, the artificial caries lesion was caused on the caries-free permanent pre molar and 48 specimens were divided into three groups each containing 16 specimens No application was performed on group 1, which acted as control group. Group 2 was treated with APF gel and was removed after a minute. Group 3 was treated with the topical application of fluoride varnish and removed after 45 minutes. Each specimen was placed into a closed container with 50ml of a artificial saliva during three months and the 3D images of the remineralization area were taken using the SkyScan each month. Using the density-measuring program in V $works^{TM}$, the density value of the remineralization area was measured. The following results were obtained: 1. All groups demonstrated an increase in the density of artificial caries lesion with time. 2. The density was significantly higher in APF gel and fluoride varnish group than control group at 1 month, 2 months, 3 months after the treatment(P<0.05). 3. The difference of the density between that "prior to treatment" and that "1 month after treatment" in Group 2 and Group 3 was significantly higher than that of Group 1 and, the difference of the density between that "1 month after treatmen" and that "2 month after treatment" in Group 3 was significantly higher than that of Group 1 and 2(P<0.05). 4. The fluoride varnish was more effective after 2 and 3 months and continuous than the APF gel.

Fluoride has been used widely for the prevention of dental caries. Many dental professionals applicated acidulated phosphate fluoride(APF) gel for the purpose of prevention of dental caries in recent years. However, the topical application of fluoride varnish is growing and getting much recognition in many parts of Europe and Scandinavia. The main purpose of this study was to compare the effect of fluoride varnish and acidulated phosphate fluoride gel on artificial caries lesion. The artificial caries lesion was caused on the sound bovine enamel and divided 60 specimens into three groups each containing twenty for the purpose of study. No application was done on group 1, which acted as control group. Group 2 was treated with the topical application of fluoride varnish and removed after 1 hour Group 3 was treated with APF gel and removed after a minute. The cycle of remineralization/demineralization went on in vitro and the microhardness was measured for the each group after 5 and 15days. The following results were obtained : 1. According to the results after 5 days, the microhardness of groups 2 and 3 were significantly higher than group 1, the control group(p<0.05) Similar results was also noticed after 15 days(p<0.05) 2. In comparison of microhardness between groups 2 and 3 after 5days, there were no significant differences between them. The results after 15 days was also similar 3. Much difference in microhardness wasn't present in groups 2 and 3 after 5 and 15days. However, the microhardness of the group 1 dropped significantly in the result of 15 days and 5 days(p<0.05).

The aim of this study is to compare the differences of the demineralization resistance of resin infiltration and 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride in bovine teeth with artificial caries. We applied 1.23% Acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel and $Icon^{(R)}$ caries infiltrant on the artificial bovine enamel carious lesion and then demineralized all samples. The depth of demineralization was measured by using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) and observed the roughness and irregularity of the enamel was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In this experiment with demineralization resistance on smooth artificial carious lesion, less depth of demineralization, roughness, and irregularity of enamel was observed in APF gel and $Icon^{(R)}$ group than in the control group. There was no significant difference between the depth of demineralization of 1.23% APF gel and $Icon^{(R)}$ caries infiltrant group. However, resin infiltration is beneficial as less roughness and irregularity was observed on the enamel surface than when 1.23% APF gel is applied.
Objective: To investigate remineralizing effect of three fluoride regimens on artificially demineralized enamel around orthodontic bracket by analyzing mineral density (MD) acquired from micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). Methods: Forty-eight bracket bonded bovine incisors were prepared to create demineralized enamel (DE) surface. The samples were divided into four groups according to the fluoride regimen: 1) no fluoridation, 2) 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel, 3) fluoridated toothpaste, and 4) 0.05% sodium fluoride mouthwash. Micro-CT was scanned after demineralization (T0), and 2 weeks (T1) and 4 weeks (T2) of fluoridation. Results: APF gel showed highest remineralization of DE during T1-T0 interval among the groups (p < 0.05); followed by toothpaste, mouthwash and no fluoridation. APF gel and toothpaste demonstrated significant increase in MD after 4 weeks of application (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Remineralization effects of three fluoride regimens were depicted through micro-CT analysis, of which APF gel was most effective.

Composite resin restorations are widely used to restore decayed teeth or preventive restoration in children. Children often receive topical fluoride treatments on a semiannual basis. However there is concern that topical acidulated phosphate fluorides (APF) may cause deterioration of composite resins. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface changes in composite resins due to topical fluoride application. Composite resins(Solitaire $2^{(R)}$, Metafil $CX^{(R)}$, Composan $LCM^{(R)}$, $Charmseal^{(R)}$) in topical fluoride agents were immersed and their surface roughness, weight loss and SEM findings were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. The 4 minutes-immersion group showed more roughened surface than 1 minute-immersion group and the control group showed the smoothest surface among all the materials, and there was statistically significant difference between the groups except the Composan $LCM^{(R)}$ (P<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between the 1 minute-immersion group and 4 minutes-immersion group in weight loss (P>0.05) 3. The experimental group treated with topical fluoride gel showed generally more roughened surface than control group in the SEM findings.

The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and 'alkasite'. Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX GP and Riva Self Cure), 'alkasite' restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek™ Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials. The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji IX GP, Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji IX GP's. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji IX GP and Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.
The aim of this study was to compare fluoride release and surface changes according to different orthodontic bracket adhesives the application of fluoride products. We used non-fluoridated composite resin Transbond fluoridated composite resins Blugloo and LightBond, resin-modified glass ionomer Rely $X^{TM}$ Luting 2, and conventional glass ionomer Fuji $I^{(R)}$. Fluoride release of five orthodontic bracket adhesives and fluoride release ability after application of three fluoride products (1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride gel, Tooth Mousse $Plus^{(R)}$, Fluor Protector, and a toothbrush with sodium fluoride-containing toothpaste) were measured using a fluoride electrode that was connected to an ion analyzer. After 4 weeks of fluoride application, the surface roughness and surface morphology were examined using a surface roughness tester and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The amounts of fluoride release were observed not only on application of Tooth Mousse $Plus^{(R)}$ and Fluor Protector on resin-modified glass ionomer Rely $X^{TM}$ Luting 2 and Fuji $I^{(R)}$, but also during tooth brushing using fluoride-containing toothpaste. After application of Tooth Mousse $Plus^{(R)}$, except Transbond XT, the surface roughness increased, and all orthodontic adhesives showed a partial drop of micro-particle filler. On application of 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride gel on all orthodontic bracket adhesives, their surface roughness increased. To bond the orthodontic bracket, resin-modified glass ionomer Rely $X^{TM}$ Luting 2 and Fuji $I^{(R)}$ adhesives are highly recommended if the amount of fluoride release is considered to confer a preventative effect on dental caries, and among the fluoride products, Tooth Mousse $Plus^{(R)}$ and Fluor Protector are better than 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride gel, and these are expected to prevent dental caries even during tooth brushing with fluoride-containing toothpaste.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of fluoride varnish on prevention of enamel demineralization. Eighty bovine enamel blocks were divided randomly into 4 groups of 20 specimens: Group I served as the control with no topical application of fluoride. Group II was treated with APF gel for 4 minutes. Group III was treated with Fluor $Protector^{(R)}$. Group IVV was treated with $CavityShield^{TM}$. After 24 hours of treatment, samples were brushed with a soft bristled tooth brush to stimulate normal mechanical wear of varnish. Early caries lesions were produced by placing each specimen into demineralization solution at pH 4.0 for 48 hours. Then the optical density of the lesions was measured by light fluorescence induced by plasma light and the surface microhardness were measured by the vicker's hardness test. The results were as follows: 1. The optical densities of group III, IV were significantly higher than that of group II, but no significant difference was noted between group III and IV. 2. The surface microhardness of group IV was the highest, followed by group III, II, and I(p<0.05). 3. There were no significant differences between group III and IV in optical density. However, the surface microhardness of group IV was significantly higher than that of group III. The results of present study indicate that the fluoride varnish is more effective than APF gel for prevention of dental caries.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relation between rinsing time and the change in enamel surface after fluoride application on the enamel surface. Methods: We recruited two sample groups with different mouth rinsing times. While one group rinsed the teeth immediately after applying acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel, the other group rinsed the teeth 30 minutes after APF gel application. In each group, we performed the following four-step experiment: (i) apply APF gel on the teeth, (ii) rinse the teeth, (iii) immerse the teeth in orange juice, and (iv) measure enamel surface microhardness and scan enamel surfaces. Results: The group that rinsed 30 minutes after treatment exhibited greater microhardness than the group that rinsed immediately after fluoride treatment. The former also showed smooth and regular crystallization, whereas the latter showed rough and damaged crystallization and irregular surfaces. Conclusions: Based on these observations, we conclude that delaying the rinsing time improves the dental caries preventive effect of fluoride.
