We propose a method that classifies images into two object types man-made and natural objects. A central object is extracted from each image by using central object extraction method[1] before classification. A central object in an images defined as a set of regions that lies around center of the image and has significant color distribution against its surrounding. We define three measures to classify the object images. The first measure is energy of edge direction histogram. The energy is calculated based on the direction of only non-circular edges. The second measure is an energy difference along directions in Gabor filter dictionary. Maximum and minimum energy along directions in Gabor filter dictionary are selected and the energy difference is computed as the ratio of the maximum to the minimum value. The last one is a shape of an object, which is also represented by Gabor filter dictionary. Gabor filter dictionary for the shape of an object differs from the one for the texture in an object in which the former is computed from a binarized object image. Each measure is combined by using majority rule tin which decisions are made by the majority. A test with 600 images shows a classification accuracy of 86%.

In sensor network systems, all the nodes are interconnected and the positional information of each sensor is essential. To measure the temperature, position detection and communication functions are required. Many sensor nodes are distributed to a measurement field, and these sensors have three main functions: they measure the distance to the other nodes, the data of which are used to determine the position of each node; they communicate with other nodes; and they measure the temperature of each node. A novel range measurement method using the difference between light and sound propagation speed is proposed. The experimental results show the temperature distribution as measured with the aid of the determined positions. The positions of every node were calculated with a PC program. Eight nodes were manufactured and their fundamental functions were tested. The results of the range measurement method, which takes relatively accurate measurements, contribute significantly to the accuracy of the position determination. Future studies will focus on 3-D position determination and on the architecture of appropriate sensors and actuators.

Acceleration sensors are usually used to measure the vibration of a structure. Although this is the most accurate method, it cannot be used remotely because these are contact-type sensors. This makes measurement difficult in areas that cannot be easily approached by surveyors, such as structures located in high or dangerous areas. Therefore, a method that can measure the structural vibration without installing sensors is required for the vibration measurement of structures located in these areas. Many conventional studies have been carried out on non-contact-type vibration measurement methods using cameras. However, they have been applied to structures with relatively large vibration displacements such as buildings or bridges, and since most of them use targets, people still have to approach the structure to install the targets. Therefore, a new method is required to supplement the weaknesses of the conventional methods. In this paper, a method is proposed to measure vibration displacements remotely using a camera without having to approach the structure. Furthermore, an estimation method for the measurement resolution and measurement error is proposed for the vibration displacement of a cylindrical structure measured using the proposed measurement method. The proposed methods are described, along with experimental results that verify their accuracy.
The accuracy of classifying pixels in HIRIS images is usually degraded by noisy bands since noisy bands may deform the typical shape of spectral reflectance. Proposed in this paper is a statistical method for noisy band removal which mainly makes use of the correlation coefficients between bands. Considering each band as a random variable, the correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two random variables. While the correlation between two signal bands is high, existence of a noisy band will produce a low correlation due to ill-correlativeness and undirectedness. The application of the correlation coefficient as a measure for detecting noisy bands is under a two-pass screening scheme. This method is independent of the prior knowledge of the sensor or the cause resulted in the noise. The classification in this experiment uses the unsupervised k-nearest neighbor algorithm in accordance with the well-accepted Euclidean distance measure and the spectral angle mapper measure. This paper also proposes a hierarchical combination of these measures for spectral matching. Finally, a separability assessment based on the between-class and within-class scatter matrices is followed to evaluate the performance.
It is desirable to use the square grid analysis with the aid of the stereo vision and image processing techniques in order to automatically measure the surface-strain distribution over a stamped part. But this method has some inherent problems such as the difficulty in enhancement of bad images, the measurement error due to the digital image resolution and the limit of the area that can be measured at a time. Therefore, it is still hard to measure the strain distribution over the entire surface of a medium-or large-sized stamped part even by using an automated strain measurement system. In this study, several methods which enable to solve these problems considerably without losing accuracy and precision In measurement are suggested. The superposition of images that have different high-lightened or damaged part from each other gives much enhanced image. A new algorithm for constructing of the element connectivity from the line-thinned image helps recognize up to 1,000 elements. And the geometry assembling algorithm including the global error minimization makes it possible to measure a large specimen with reliability and efficiency.

The length of root canal has to be measured to cure root canal. Several apex locators were developed to measure the length of root canal. And they were verified by X-ray or micrometer method. But these methods do not consider the non-linear bends of pulp and have ${\pm}0.5mm$ error which is large to measure the length of root canal. The purpose of this study is the research of new method to measure the length of root canal and verifying the apex locator using Micro-CT. The length of root canal of 6 teeth were measured with the apex locator. When the apex locator reads 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.5, 0.9, 1.0mm, the teeth with the file fixed were photographed. The average lengths of root canal of 6 teeth measured by Micro-CT were 0.488, 0.589, 0.680, 0.775, 0.897, 0.992mm.
This paper introduces an effective methodology for reliability-based design optimization of electromagnetic products, where a performance measure approach is adopted to accurately assess probabilistic constrains. Two design problems consisting of a loudspeaker and a superconducting magnetic energy storage system are considered. The efficiency of the proposed method in evaluating the failure probability of performances during the optimization process are compared with the existing method based on the reliability index approach. Moreover, in term of the accuracy of probability failure values, optimized design results are examined with reference values obtained from the Monte Carlo simulation.

As industry of a semiconductor and LCD industry have been rapidly growing, precision technologies of machining such as etching and 3D measurement are required. Stylus has been important measuring method in traditional manufacturing process. However, its disadvantages are low measuring speed and damage possibility at contacting point. To overcome mentioned disadvantage, non-contacting measurement method is needed such as PMP(Phase Measuring Profilometry), WSI(white scanning interferometer) and Confocal Profilometry. Among above 3 well-known methods, WSI started to be applied to FPD(flat panel display) manufacturing process. Even though it overcomes 21t ambiguity of PMP method and can measure objects which has specular surface, the measuring speed and vibration coming from manufacturing machine are one of main issue to apply full automatic total inspection. In this study, We develop high speed WSI system and algorithm to reduce unknown noise. The developing WSI and algorithm are implemented to measure 3D surface of wafer. Experimental results revealed that the proposed system and algorithm are able to measure 3D surface profile of wafer with a good precision and high speed.

A blood-glucose meter is one of the in vitro diagnostic devices to measure and control the glucose concentration of diabetics. In order to measure the glucose level in the blood, the common method is to measure the amount of electrons, that is, the output current generated by glucose oxidation after a blood sample is inserted into the test strip containing an enzyme. The hematocrit is an obstacle in measuring accurate blood glucose concentration. This paper deals with the design and implementation of a blood-glucose meter to correct the hematocrit interference. We propose a sequential method which measures impedance using the alternating current and then measures glucose in the blood using the direct current. In addition, this paper introduces how to use commercial glucose strips based on the proposed system. Finally, we conducted the performance evaluation of the proposed system by comparing the measured current and impedance with those of the references. As a result, the standard deviation of the current measurement is approximately 0.6nA and the impedance measurement error for measuring the hematocrit is approximately within 1%. The proposed system will improve the accuracy of the conventional blood-glucose meter by reducing the hematocrit interference.

This paper introduces an experimental device which can measure accurate aerodynamic forces without support interference in wide experimental region for wind tunnel test of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). A stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method was introduced to a magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS), which can eliminate support interference by levitating the experimental model, to establish wider experimental region; thereby MSBS-SPR integrated system was developed. The SPR method is non-contact, highly accurate three-dimensional position measurement method providing wide measurement range. To evaluate the system performance, a series of performance evaluations including SPR system measurement accuracy and 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) position/attitude control of the MAV model were conducted. This newly developed system could control the MAV model rapidly and accurately within almost 60mm for translational DOFs and 40deg for rotational DOFs inside of $300{\times}300mm$ test section. In addition, a static wind tunnel test was conducted to verify the aerodynamic force measurement capability. It turned out that this system could accurately measure the aerodynamic forces in low Reynolds number, even for the weak forces which were hard to measure using typical balance system, without making any mechanical contact with the MAV model.
