Damage assessment of shear buildings by synchronous estimation of stiffness and damping using measured acceleration

  • Nonlinear time-domain system identification (SI) algorithm is proposed to assess damage in a shear building by synchronously estimating time-varying stiffness and damping parameters using measured acceleration data. Mass properties have been assumed as the a priori known information. Viscous damping was utilized for the current research. To chase possible nonlinear dynamic behavior under severe vibration, an incremental governing equation of vibrational motion has been utilized. Stiffness and damping parameters are estimated at each time step by minimizing the response error between measured and computed acceleration increments at the measured degrees-of-freedom. To solve a nonlinear constrained optimization problem for optimal structural parameters, sensitivities of acceleration increment were formulated with respect to stiffness and damping parameters, respectively. Incremental state vectors of vibrational motion were computed numerically by Newmark-${\beta}$ method. No model is pre-defined in the proposed algorithm for recovering the nonlinear response. A time-window scheme together with Monte Carlo iterations was utilized to estimate parameters with noise polluted sparse measured acceleration. A moving average scheme was applied to estimate the time-varying trend of structural parameters in all the examples. To examine the proposed SI algorithm, simulation studies were carried out intensively with sample shear buildings under earthquake excitations. In addition, the algorithm was applied to assess damage with laboratory test data obtained from free vibration on a three-story shear building model.

  • This article presents a new acceleration/deceleration method for real-time control of autonomous mobile robots. In this method, a function which produces the table of acceleration/deceleration in real-time is proposed. This function, while satisfying the basic concept of mechanics, can choose both various ranges of velocity and distance ranges for the selected velocities. Moreover it can control motors with real time. This function is convenient to be realized by programming. and it is faster than other functions because it can be made by assembly language.

NUMERICAL STUDIES OF COSMIC RAY ACCELERATION AT COSMIC SHOCKS

  • Shocks are ubiquitous in astrophysical environments and cosmic-rays (CRs) are known to be accelerated at collisionless shocks via diffusive shock acceleration. It is believed that the CR pressure is important in the evolution of the interstellar medium of our galaxy and most of galactic CRs with energies up to ${\~}\;10^{15}$ eV are accelerated by supernova remnant shocks. In this contribution we have studied the CR acceleration at shocks through numerical simulation of 1D, quasi-parallel shocks for a wide range of shock Mach numbers and shock speeds. We show that CR modified shocks evolve to time-asymptotic states by the time injected particles are accelerated to moderately relativistic energies, and that two shocks with the same Mach number, but with different shock speeds, evolve qualitatively similarly when the results are presented in terms of a characteristic diffusion length and diffusion time. We find that $10^{-4} - 10^{-3}$ of the particles passed through the shock are accelerated to form the CR population, and the injection rate is higher for shocks with higher Mach number. The time asymptotic value for the CR acceleration efficiency is controlled mainly by shock Mach number, and high Mach number shocks all evolve towards efficiencies ${\~}50\%$, regardless of the injection rate and upstream CR pressure. We conclude that the injection rates in strong quasi-parallel shocks are sufficient to lead to significant nonlinear modifications to the shock structures, implying the importance of the CR acceleration at astrophysical shocks.

Acceleration-based neural networks algorithm for damage detection in structures

  • In this study, a real-time damage detection method using output-only acceleration signals and artificial neural networks (ANN) is developed to monitor the occurrence of damage and the location of damage in structures. A theoretical approach of an ANN algorithm that uses acceleration signals to detect changes in structural parameters in real-time is newly designed. Cross-covariance functions of two acceleration responses measured before and after damage at two different sensor locations are selected as the features representing the structural conditions. By means of the acceleration features, multiple neural networks are trained for a series of potential loading patterns and damage scenarios of the target structure for which its actual loading history and structural conditions are unknown. The feasibility of the proposed method is evaluated using a numerical beam model under the effect of model uncertainty due to the variability of impulse excitation patterns used for training neural networks. The practicality of the method is also evaluated from laboratory-model tests on free-free beams for which acceleration responses were measured for several damage cases.

The Effects of Air Injection in Compressor Exit on the Response Performance of a Turbocharged Diesel Engine under the Operating Conditions of Rapid Acceleration. (터보과급디젤기관의 급가속 운전시 압축기출구에의 공기분사가 응답성능에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, an experimental study is carried out under the operating conditions of low speed and rapid acceleration in order to investigate and improve the response characteristics of a turbocharged diesel engine with radial turbine driven by exhaust gas. A rapid acceleration for investigating the response performance is applied to the fuel-pump rack of the engine from 0-10% to 0-40% in steps of 10%, and accelerating time of 1, 2 and 3 seconds is applied to the engine. Further experiment for improving the low speed torque and acceleration performance is also performed by means of injecting air into the inlet manifold at compressor exit during the period of low speed and application of a rapid acceleration. The effects of air injection on the response performance are represented at subjected engine speed with the changes of response performance factors such as air injection pressure, air injection period, accelerating rate, accelerating time and load. From the experimental results obtained throughout this study, it is shown that air injection into the inlet manifold at compressor exit is closely related to the improvement of low speed and acceleration performance of a turbocharged diesel engine.

  • In this study, an ANN-based damage detection algorithm using acceleration signals is developed for alarming locations of damage in beam-type structures. A new ANN-algorithm using output-only acceleration responses is designed for damage detection in real time. The cross-covariance of two acceleration signals measured at two different locations is selected as the feature representing the structural condition.   • In this paper, we analyzed normal gait acceleration signal by time series analysis methods. Accelerations were measured during walking using a biaxial accelerometer. Acceleration data were acquired from normal subjects(23 men and one woman) walking on a level corridor of 20m in length with three different walking speeds. Acceleration signals were measured at a sampling frequency of 60Hz from a biaxial accelerometer mounted between L3 and L4 intervertebral area. Each step signal was analyzed using Box-Jenkins method. Most of the differenced normal step signals were modeled to AR(3) and the model didn't show difference for model's orders and coefficients with walking speed. But, tile model showed difference with acceleration signal direction - vertical and lateral. The above results suggested the proposed model could be applied to unit analysis.

Controlling Position of Virtual Reality Contents with Mouth-Wind and Acceleration Sensor

  • In this paper, we propose a new framework to control VR(Virtual reality) contents in real time using user's mouth-wind and acceleration sensor of mobile device. In VR, user interaction technology is important, but various user interface methods is still lacking. Most of the interaction technologies are hand touch screen touch or motion recognition. We propose a new interface technology that can interact with VR contents in real time using user's mouth-wind method with acceleration sensor. The direction of the mouth-wind is determined using the angle and position between the user and the mobile device, and the control position is adjusted using the acceleration sensor of the mobile device. Noise included in the size of the mouth wind is refined using a simple average filter. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed technology, we show the result of interacting with contents in game and simulation in real time by applying control position and mouth-wind external force to the game.

  • Tire hydroplaning is one of the most important tire performances, especially for safety on wet road surface. And nowadays various methods such as FEM and FVM analysis are being applied to design and improve tire hydroplaning performance, along with on-vehicle test of tire hydroplaning. Conventional evaluation of tire hydroplaning has been done by comparing peak lateral acceleration and vehicle speed in time domain. But in this paper, frequency domain analysis of lateral acceleration when hydroplaning at high speed has been carried out to get the quantitative comparison between test tires. And it is concluded that the frequency spectrum analysis of lateral acceleration gives much better discrimination, as compared to the conventional time domain analysis of lateral acceleration and vehicle speed.
