It is intended to retrieve the time history of displacement from measured acceleration signal. In this study, the word retrieving means reconstructing the time history of original displacement signal from already measured acceleration signal not just extracting various information using relevant signal processing techniques. Unlike extracting required information from the signal, there are not many options to apply to retrieve the time history of displacement signal, once the acceleration signal is measured and recorded with given sampling rate. There are two methods, in general, to convert measured acceleration signal into displacement signal. One is directly integrating the acceleration signal in time domain. The other is dividing the Fourier transformed acceleration signal by the scale factor of - $\omega$$^2$and taking the inverse Fourier transform of it. It turned out both the methods produced a significant amount of errors depending on the sampling resolution in time and frequency domain when digitizing the acceleration signals. A simple and effective way to convert the time history of acceleration signal into the time history of displacement signal without significant errors is studied here with the analysis on the errors involved in the conversion process.
To analyze the dynamic acceleration characteristics, it is necessary to identify the acceleration model using some methods that can represent the dynamic properties well. In this sense, fractal methods were used for the verification of characteristics of an acceleration signal. To estimate and analyze the geometry of acceleration signal, a fractal interpolation and its analysis was introduced in this paper. The chaotic nature of acceleration signal was considered in fractal modeling. In this study the fractal signal modeling has brought a focus within the scope of the fractal interpolation and fractal dimension. And a new idea of fractal dimension has been introduced and discussed considering the damping ratio and amplitude for its dynamic properties of the signal. The fractal dimension of acceleration with respect to the scaling factor using fixed data points of 1000 points was calculated and discussed. The acceleration behaviors of this results show some different characteristics. And this fractal analysis can be applied to other signal analysis of several machining such as pendulum type grinding and milling which has many dynamic properties in the signal.
In general, it may be advantageous to measure the pressure pulsation near a valve to detect a valve defect in a linear compressor. However, the acceleration signals are more advantageous for rapid classification in a mass-production line. This paper deals with the performance improvement of fault classification using only the compressor-shell acceleration signal based on the relation between the refrigerant pressure pulsation and the shell acceleration of the compressor. A transfer function was estimated experimentally to take into account the signal noise ratio between the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant in the suction pipe and the shell acceleration. The shell acceleration signal of the compressor was modified using this transfer function to improve the defect classification performance. The defect classification of the modified signal was evaluated in the acceleration signal in the frequency domain using Fisher's discriminant ratio (FDR). The defect classification method was validated by experimental data. By using the method presented, the classification of valve defects can be performed rapidly and efficiently during mass production.
In this study, an effective estimation method of wheel acceleration is presented. The wheel acceleration is mainly used in the ABS(anti-lick brake system) and the TCS(traction control system). The wheel acceleration is a derivative term of the wheel speed which is generally measured by the wheel speed sensors. The results of a simple differentiation of the signal and an observation of the signal by Kalman filter show that Kalman filter has better performance than the simple differentiation. The differentiated sine signal which is contaminated with random noise shows a rugged signal compared with the signal which is filtered by the Kalman filter. The covariance of the differentiated signal is higher than that of the Kalman-filtered signal, too. The presented Kalman filter technique shows an effective way of solution to get the estimated wheel acceleration value which is sufficient to be applied to ABS or TCS control algorithms.
In this paper, we analyzed normal gait acceleration signal by time series analysis methods. Accelerations were measured during walking using a biaxial accelerometer. Acceleration data were acquired from normal subjects(23 men and one woman) walking on a level corridor of 20m in length with three different walking speeds. Acceleration signals were measured at a sampling frequency of 60Hz from a biaxial accelerometer mounted between L3 and L4 intervertebral area. Each step signal was analyzed using Box-Jenkins method. Most of the differenced normal step signals were modeled to AR(3) and the model didn't show difference for model's orders and coefficients with walking speed. But, tile model showed difference with acceleration signal direction - vertical and lateral. The above results suggested the proposed model could be applied to unit analysis.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to show differences in impact variables between treadmills with (treadmills B, C, and D) and treadmills without a shock-absorbing function (treadmill A) to propose the development of a treadmill with improved or added shock-absorbing function to reduce impact shock. Method: Thirteen male students in their twenties who had habitual rear foot strike during running ran on four treadmills at 2.67 m/sec while ankle and neck acceleration data were collected. The magnitude of the ankle and neck acceleration peaks and peak positive ankle acceleration were calculated. The power spectral density of each signal was calculated to transform the ankle and neck accelerations in the frequency domain. Results: The peak positive ankle acceleration on treadmill B was significantly lesser than that on treadmills A and D, and that on treadmill C was significantly less than that on treadmill A (p < .01). Peak positive neck acceleration was not statistically different between the treadmills. The frequencies of the peak power of the ankle and neck acceleration signal within the lower and higher frequency ranges were not statistically different between the treadmills. The signal power magnitude of the ankle in higher frequency ranges on treadmill B was significantly less than that on treadmills A, C, and D (p < .01). The signal power magnitude of the ankle in higher frequency ranges was not statistically different between the treadmills. The signal power magnitudes of the neck acceleration signal within the lower and higher frequency ranges were not statistically significantly different between the treadmills. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the shock-absorbing function of a treadmill plays a role in reducing impact shock. Therefore, in future treadmill development, shock-absorbing function should be improved or incorporated to reduce impact shock to the body.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the head and tibial acceleration signal magnitudes, and their powers and shock attenuations between flat-footed and normal-footed running. Methods : Ten flat-footed and ten normal-footed subjects ran barefoot on a treadmill with a force plate at 3.22m/s averaged from their preferred running speed using heel-toe running pattern while the head and tibial acceleration in the vertical axis data was collected. The accelerometers were sampled at 2000 Hz and voltage was set at 100 mv, respectively. The peak magnitudes of the head and tibial acceleration signals in time domain were calculated. The power spectral density(PSD) of each signal in the frequency domain was also calculated. In addition to that, shock attenuation was calculated by a transfer function of the head PSD relative to the tibia PSD. A one-way analysis of variance was used to determine the difference in time and frequency domain acceleration variables between the flat-footed and normal-footed groups running. Results : Peaks of the head and tibial acceleration signals were significantly greater during flat-footed group running than normal-footed group running(p<.05). PSDs of the tibial acceleration signal in the lower and higher frequency range were significantly greater during flat-footed running(p<.05), but PSDs of the head acceleration signal were not statistically different between the two groups. Flat-footed group running resulted in significantly greater shock attenuation for the higher frequency ranges compared with normal-footed group running(p<.05). Conclusion : The difference in impact shock magnitude and frequency content between flat-footed and normal-footed group during running suggested that the body had different ability to control impact shock from acceleration. It might be conjectured that flat-footed running was more vulnerable to potential injury than normal-footed running from an impact shock point of view.
Frequency domain has been used to detect chatter vibration and to decide commencing point of chatter for the milling processes. For this, power spectrum of accelerations signal is analyzed in the frequency domain. Also, the power spectrum and surface roughness are measured, compared, and evaluated according to the depth of cut by experimental works. As a results, it is known that the commencing point of chatter can be decided the behavior of the maximum amplitude of the power spectrum of acceleration signal and there is a correlation between the power spectrum of acceleration signal and the surface roughness. In conclusion, the power spectrum of acceleration signal can be used as a useful information for detec-tion and estimation of chatter vibration in machining.
