  • This study was investigated, from October to November, 1995, how environmental factors affected both the diversity and the ecology of soil microarthropods according to the sampling sites at althletic training park located in Chonju, Chonbuk. The results obtained are as follow: At the sampling areas, the soil microarthropods were identified into 6 classes, 15 orders, 17,145 individuals. Arachnida showed the highest individual rate (74.10%) in soil mictoarthropods and Acari occupied the great majority (97.98%) in Archinida. Collembola showed the highest individual rate (82.01%) in Insecta. Species planted at althletic training park were 10 famillies 12 genera 20 species 2 varietas 1 forma. In environmental factors which have an effect on the distribution of the soil microarthropods, acarina showed positive correlation for rate of carbon/nitrogen, soil moisture, soil acidity, and lead(Pb) and also negative correlation for solidity and intensity of lightness. Collembola and other animals showed negative correlation for solidity.

  • Except for a cosmopolitan and major pest of apples, Tetranychus urticae Koch, Tetranychus mites in Korea such as T. viennensis Zaher, T. kanzawai Kishida, and T. truncams Ehara have been considered as quarantine pests by Canada and United States. Even though these mites are not feeders on apples, they are suspected to attach accidentally on apple h i t s in autumn as females enter the diapause. The characters used to identify Tetranychus mites have been confined to the shape of aedeagus in adult male. To develope a fast and accurate alternative identification protocol applied to hibernating female mites on apples, their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were examined to find out any polymorphisms to discriminate each species from the other ones. Three pairs of primers for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to amplify cytochrome oxidase subunit I (CO-I) coding region in mitochondrial DNA5 of four species of Tetranycus mites. The longest amplified product was estimated its size as about 680 bp. Digestion with restriction enzymes, AluI, Ddel, and Sau3A, showed length polymorphisms, which will he useful as diagnostic markers to identify Tetranychus mites. Schematic restriction maps in amplified region were shown for each species.

  • The potential of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acarina : Phytoseiidae) to control two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae (Acarina : Tetranychidae) was investigated on sustainable strawberry fields in Jeonnam area. The density of T. urticae increased from 4th and 7th weeks after single and two timings release P. persimilis, respectively. On the three timings of release plot, number(density) of T. urticae on a leaf maintained fewer than 10 during the 15 weeks after release. In the 1,000 release of P. persimilis per $100m^2$ plot, P. persimilis could not suppress T. urticae. In the 2,000 release plot, P. persimilis could suppress T. urticae with low density which was the similar in the 3,000 release plot. Two-spotted spider mite, T. urticae, occurred from late March and increased density in Hampyeong area. In the P. persimilis released field, T. urticae inhibited continuously after release. In Boseong area, density of P. persimilis increased 50 per 10 leaves through increasing of T. urticae. Percent of occurrence of T. urticae showed high $10.5{\sim}75.5%$ in none-release predatory mite but not high in release treatment. T. urticae on sustainable strawberry field could be inhibited by P. persimilis.

  • The selective toxicity of spirodiclofen and fluacrypyrim+tetradifon to the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis and the tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai was evaluated. The bean leaf discs with adult females or eggs of both species were sprayed with several concentrations of spirodiclofen or fluacrypyrim+tetradifon. Spirodiclofen and fluacrypyrim+tetradifon were much less toxic to P. persimilis than to T. kanzawai. Although the survival rate of adult females of P. persimilis tended to decrease with increasing concentrations of spirodiclofen, 92-68% of predators survived at concentrations of 22.5-180 ppm. Likewise, reproduction was reduced with increasing spirodiclofen concentration. Spirodiclofen did not affect the hatch of P. persimilis eggs. Survival of immature predators decreased with increasing spirodiclofen concentration, however, 88-20% of immature predators reached adulthood at 22.5-90 ppm. In the case of fluacrypyrim+tetradifon, the survival rate of adult females of P. persimilis tended to decrease with increasing concentrations of fluacrypyrim+tetradifon. However, 94-72% of predators remained alive at concentrations of 22.5-180 ppm. Likewise, reproduction was reduced with increasing fluacrypyrim+tetradifon concentration. Fluracypyrim+tetradifon did not affect the hatch of P. persimilis eggs. Survival of immature predators decreased with increasing fluacrypyrim+tetradifon concentration, however, 100-86% of immature predators reached adulthood at 22.5-180 ppm. Based on the results, spirodiclofen and fluacrypyrim+tetradifon appeared to be promising candidates for use in integrated mite management programs where P. persimilis is the major natural enemy.

  • During October-December 1987, chigger mites infested on the striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius cereae) collected at Pochun-gun, Gyeonggi Province and Chinhae city, Kyongnam Province were identified. . 1. Of 171 back-striped mice collected, chigger mites wire found from 58 mice, showing 33.9% of infestation rate. 2. Total 865 chigger mites collected were classified into seven species; Leptotrombidium pallidum (4.3%), L. palpate(23.0%), L. orienpalis(20.2%), L. xetum(19.0%), Neotrombicula tamiyai(32.9%), JV. japonica(0.25%) and Euschongastia koreaensis(0.3%). Though the most dominant species in number was N. tamiyai(32.9% of the total), this species was collected at very limited locality and for a short period. Therefore, most common species in Korea seems to be L. palpale which was found at all localities throughout the whole survey period. L. pallidum which is known as the vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea was collected in a very low number(4.3% of the total chiggers collected). 3. The number of chigger mites infested on a host animal showed great variations from one chigger up to 207 chiggers. The present study has shown that there may be other Leptotrombidium species mite(s) for the vector and host of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea.

  • These experiments were conducted to investigate the ecological characteristics of Amblyseius womersleyi Schica, which was biological agent in the integrated management of tea red spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida. At four constant temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}$C, the periods of A. womersleyi from egg to adult emergencewere 22.8, 9.6, 4.8, and 3.6 days, respectively. Developmental threshold and effectively cumulative degree-day from egg to adult emergence were 12.7"C and 61.4DD, respectively. Preoviposition periods of A.womersleyi were shorter than oviposition and postoviposition periods. The number of eggs laid per female was21.7, 28.1, 34.2, and 48.0 at the respective temperatures. The intrinsic rates of increase were estimated to be 0.064, 0.139, 0.349, and 0.402; the mean generation times were 36.0, 19.3, 8.6, and 7.7 days; the populationdoubling times were 10.8, 5.0, 2.0, and 1.7 days, respectively. A. womersleyi overwintered on green weeds, fallenleaves and in the soil surface as adult females. A. womersleyi gravid female consumed 3.0, 4.9, 15.7, and19.4 eggs of T. kanzawai per day at 15, 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}$C, respectively. A. womersleyi protonymph consumed4.6 eggs, deutonymph 6.3 eggs, and female during oviposition consumed 19.4 eggs, and 6.8 eggs of T. kanzawaiduring postoviposition per day at 30$^{\circ}$C. at 30$^{\circ}$C.

  • The selective tox\ulcornercity of fenpyroximate to the predatory mite Amblyseius womersleyi and the twospotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae was evaluated. Adult females and eggs of both species were placed on bean leaf dis~sd ipped in several concentrations of fenpyroximate. Fenpyroximate was much less toxic to A. womersleyi than to T. urticae. Although the survival of adult females of A. womersleyi tended to decrease with increasing fenpyroximate concentration, 58-74% of predators remained alive at concentrations of 6.25-50 ppm. However, reproduction of predators was not significantly reduced at any of the concentrations tested. At 6.25-50 ppm, 32-40% of twospotted spider mite adult females survived but all survivors were immobilized. Moreover, reproduction of twospotted spider mites was reduced with increasing fenpyroximate concentration. Fenpyroximate did not affect the hatch of A. womersleyi eggs or the development of immature predators. Although survival of immature predators decreased with increasing fenpyroximate concentration, 16-48% of immature predators reached adulthood at 6.25-50 ppm. However, all immature spider mites failed to develop to adulthood at 6.25-50 ppm. Adult female predators survived on a diet of twospotted spider mites intoxicated with fenpyroximate, and their fecundity and sex-ratio of the progeny were not substantially affected. Fenpyroximate at selective sublethal concentrations (6.25-12.5 ppm), therefore, could be of value in adjusting predatorlprey ratio in integrated management of twospotted spider mites.

  • Studies on seasonal prevalence and geographical distribution of chigger mites were carried out during the period of August 1990-December 1991, and the results are summarized as follows. From total 325 field rodents collected during the study period, 15,679 chiggers were obtained and 12 species of 4 genera were identified. Leptotrombidium pallidum, a vector species of tsutsugamushi disease in Korea was the predominant species and distributed throughout the country except southern part of Korea, whereas L. scutellare, known also as a vector species was distributed mainly in southern part of Korea. The distribution of chigger mites was strongly localized by species, showing different predominant species at each locality during the same season. The predominant species were L. pallidum(92.3%) at Dorai-5ri, Wondang-ub, Neotrombicula kwangneungensis (44.7%) at Sanjung-ri, Pochun-gun, N. tamiyai (55.1%) at Changgok-ri, Paju-gun, L. orientale (55.2%) at Jangsin-ri, Iksan-gun, and L. scutellare (47.6%) at Sinyong-dong, Iri-si. Study on seasonal prevalence of L. pallidum chiggers resulted that they started appearing in September, showed the peak in November, almost disappeared during the period of December-March, reappeared in April-May showing a small peak, and again almost disappeared until September. L. scutellare showed the peak in October, sharply decreased thereafter, and disappeared during the period of January-September.

  • Methanol and hexane extracts from 35 species in 27 families of herbal plants were evaluated for their acaricidal activities against two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae by leaf-dipping and spraying methods in laboratory, pot and field, respectively. Acaricidal activities were different depending on herbal plants. When T. urticae was released on leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris var. humilis that were dipped in the 1,000 ppm hexane extracts from fruits of Torreya nucifer and Daphan genkwa, seeds of Xanthium strumarium and Pharbitis nil at one minute they experienced 56.8, 47.8, 47.7, and 47.7% mortalities, respectively. Dipping time influenced acaricidal activity, that is, one minute dipping was more effective than 30 second dipping of Phaseolus vulgaris var. humilis leaves. However, extracts of X. strumarium and P. nil seeds had comparatively high activities. Concentration of hexane extract of X. strumarium and P. nil seeds revealing LC50 were 1,824 and 1,899 ppm, respectively. Extracts of both plants from hot and cold water were not effective representing <20% mortality at 1,000 ppm. However, hexane extracts of X. strumarium and P. nil seeds were effective against T. urticae on P. vulgaris var. humilis representing 76.3 and 71.3% mortalities in pot, respectively. Control effects of hexane extract of P. nil seed were 50.8 and 35.1% at 2,000 and 1,000 ppm against T. urticae on Chrysanthemum morifolium in greenhouse, respectively.
