  • This study examined the fluidity and strength properties, water resistance, durability, and freeze-thaw of cementless loess mortar using an eco-friendly hardening agent. The experimental result indicates that 28 days compressive and flexural strength of the loess mortar was increased regardless of the weathered granite soil and loess mixture ratio as the replacement ratio of the hardening agent increases. The strengths were significantly increased until 14 days regardless of the hardening agent, while the effect on the strengths increasement was relatively low after 14 days. Thus, the strength development of loess mortar concrete was found to be faster than that of the normal concrete. In addition, when the hardening agent of 10% was used, the average flexural strength was 1.7MPa which is insufficient compared to the 28-day flexural strength of 4.5MPa for the paving concrete. However, the flexural strengths of the loess mortar concrete using the hardening agents of 20% and 30% were 4.0MPa and 5.3MPa, respectively. Thus, the hardening agent need to be at least 20% so that the loess mortar can be used for paving concrete. The experiment for water resistance shows that the repeated absorption and dry reduced mass regardless of the mixing ratio of the loess. The maximum length change also decreased with increasing the substitution rate loess mixture ratio and the hardening agent. The result of the freeze-thaw resistance test indicates that the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity at 300 cycle freeze-thaw with the hardening agents of 20% and 30% were 75% and 79%, relatively. Thus, the hardening agent of at least 20% is required to obtain the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of 60% for the loess mortar.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which the deterioration in strength of high strength concrete of 60MPa replaced by a large amount of recycled coarse aggregates (more than 60% to 100% of replacement ratio) could be recovered with steel fiber reinforcement through material compressive strength test and shear failure test on short and middle beams and then to offer useful data for aggregate supply system of a sustainable resource circulation type. This study first examined the results of previous related tests. The results of the material compressive strength tests confirmed that when using a combination of steel fiber reinforcements of volumn ratio 0.75% and high quality recycled coarse aggregates with an water absorption rate within 2.0%, the strength characteristics of high strength concrete of 60MPa level were not only restored to the strength level of concrete made with natural aggregates, but also showed superior ductility. And the shear failure tests on short and middle beams using recycled coarse aggregates more than 60% with shear span to depth ratio (a/d) of 2 and 4 controlled by shear forces mainly confirmed that effects of superior shear strength increase and ductile behavior characteristics were showed by steel fiber reinforcements.

  • This study is an experimental study on the recycling of bottom ash in coal ash discharged from a thermal power plant. Bottom ash has limited research on recycling because it has more porous and higher water absorption ratio than fly ash. In this paper, the bottom ash was pulverized to a specific surface area of $4,000cm^2/g$ in order to use as a binder, and the flow, compressive strength test and microstructure analysis of the bottom ash based geopolymer mortar were performed. The flow measurement results of the geopolymer mortar showed that the flow rate was improved by increasing mixing water as the molar concentration of activator was increased. Compressive strength increased with increasing curing temperature and molar concentration. Through the microstructure analysis, we could confirm the geopolymer gel produced by the reaction of the condensation polymerization. It is considered that it is possible to make the bottom ash based geopolymer concrete through proper molar concentration of activator and high temperature curing.

  • In this paper, a broadband planar monopole antenna for multi-band services is proposed. The physical size of the proposed antenna is miniaturized by folding a rectangular loop. And a resonance point in the 3.9 GHz band is reduced by a coupling phenomenon with the central part of the T-shaped patch and the folded rectangular loop. In addition, the T-shaped patch is inserted to the rectangular shaped monopole antenna due to deriving the broadband frequency characteristics. The frequency characteristic is optimized by adjusting the gap and length of the folded rectangular loops and a transverse diameter of the T-shaped patch. The antenna dimensions including the ground plane are $40{\times}60{\times}1.6mm^3$. It is fabricated on the FR-4 substrate(${\epsilon}_r$=4.4) using a microstrip line of $50{\Omega}$ for impedance matching. In the measured result, the bandwidth corresponding to the VSWR of 2:1 is 162 MHz(815~977 MHz) and 2,530 MHz(1.43~3.96 GHz). For analyzing the human effect by the proposed antenna, 1 g and 10 g averaged SARs are simulated and measured. As the simulated results, 1 g-averaged SAR is 1.044 W/kg, and 10 g-averaged SAR is 0.718 W/kg. This result are satisfied by the SAR guidelines which are 1.6 W/kg(1 g-averaged) and 2.0 W/kg(10 g-averaged).

  • SAR measurement which was applied only to the mobile phone has been expanded in the Korean radio regulation law to the portable wireless communication equipments within 20 cm from the human body since Jan. 2012. The two-way radio operating at 150 MHz frequency band was newly included following the revised radio regulation in the target equipment of measurement. SAR measurement system at 150 MHz satisfying this regulation is necessary accordingly for SAR conformity assessment. The international SAR measurement standard(IEC 62209-2) includes the evaluation method on frequencies above 300 MHz, and the commercial SAR measurement system can measure SAR above 300 MHz only. The size of the reference dipole antenna(760 mm, return loss: -27.57 dB) and flat phantom ($1,300 mm(L){\times}900 mm(W){\times}200 mm(H)$), targeted SAR values for numerical analysis(1 g: 1.08 W/kg, 10 g: 0.77 W/kg) for SAR validation evaluation at 150 MHz frequency are proposed in this paper. The suggested dipole antenna and flat phantom are assembled and used to verify the conformity assessment of commercial SAR measurement system. The measured SAR values of 1 g and 10 g were obtained respectively to be 1.13 W/kg, 0.81 W/kg, and they satisfied the effective range(within ${\pm}10$ %) of IEC international standard. The standards based on this study are expected to be used for the domestic SAR measurement standard and IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) international standard.

  • A diketo-type ligand was synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of thiophene-2-aldehyde with acetylacetone, subsequently its transition metal complexes with Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) chlorides were also prepared. All the complexes were characterized by various physico-chemical methods. The molar conductivity data reveals ionic nature for the complexes. The electronic spectrum and the EPR values suggest square planar geometry for the Cu(II) ion. Interaction of the Cu(II) complex with CTDNA (calf thymus DNA) was studied by absorption spectral method and cyclic voltammetry. The $k_{obs}$ values versus [DNA] gave a linear plot suggesting psuedo-first order reaction kinetics. The cyclic voltammogram of the Cu(II) complex reveals a quasi-reversible wave attributed to Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox couple for one electron transfer with $E_{1/2}$ values -0.240 V and -0.194 V. respectively. On addition of CTDNA, there is a shift in the $E_{1/2}$ values 168 mV and 18 mV respectively and decrease in Ep values. The shift in $E_{1/2}$ values in the presence of CTDNA suggests strong binding of Cu(II) complex to the CTDNA.

  • $CO_2$ absorption processes have a good potential for large scale capture of $CO_2$ but a large amount of absorbing solution has to be regenerated, undesirably increasing the consumption of energy such as sensible heat and latent heat of vaporization. In this study, a cooling crystallization process which would separate the $CO_2$-rich potassium bicarbonate crystals from $CO_2$-lean water was developed to reduce the energy penalty. Sterically hindered alkanolamine additives were used to enhance the $CO_2$ removal efficiency and their antisolvent effect on the crystallization was found in a continuous cooling crystallizer. The production yields of crystals were increased in the sequence of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) < 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (AMPD) < 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol (AHPD), which are related to the number of hydroxyl groups in the additive molecules. Using $^{13}carbon$ nuclear magnetic resonance, the additives favored the formation of bicarbonate ions by steric hindrance effect and increased the supersaturation of $KHCO_3$. It is shown that the additives increase the mean size of crystals and crystal growth rate by increasing supersaturation. The additives are promising for enhancing the $CO_2$ removal efficiency and reducing the regeneration energy cost of $CO_2$ absorbing solution by promoting $KHCO_3$ crystallization.

  • Extracting and analytical conditions of curcumin, and removal of bitterness substance from Curcuma longa L. were investigated. Absorption maxima was shown to be 424 nm at methanol solvent. Optimal conditions for analysis of curcumin was Zorbax eclipse $C_{18}$ column ; mobile phase, 75% MeOH ; flow rate, 0.8 mL/min ; wave length, UV 424 nm. Curcumin component was analyzed to be the highest content in methanol extract. In all samples, extraction yield by heating was shown to be effective as compared to room temperature. Curcumin contents of methanol and ethanol extracts in extraction of room temperature were 14.4 and 14.2 times higher than that of water extract, respectively. Two hot solvent extracts has a high curcumin content being 150 mg% as compared to room temperature. Extracting time was an effective condition when it was extracted for 60 minutes for elevating the curcumin content of water and methanol extracts. Bitter substance (BS) was markedly decreased in water extract by heat treatment of above $80^{\circ}C$. BS was weak in $121^{\circ}C$ treatment than in room temperature and it was however strong in $100^{\circ}C$ treatment. RT and $70^{\circ}C$ heat treatment were not different in BS intensity.

  • Background: Ginsenoside Rh2 (G-Rh2) is a ginseng saponin that is widely investigated because of its remarkable antitumor activity. However, the molecular mechanism by which (20S) G-Rh2 triggers its functions and how target animals avoid its cytotoxic action remains largely unknown. Methods: Phage display was used to screen the human targets of (20S) G-Rh2. Fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy were used to confirm the interaction of candidate target proteins and (20S) G-Rh2. Molecular docking was utilized to calculate the estimated free energy of binding and to structurally visualize their interactions. MTT assay and immunoblotting were used to assess whether human serum albumin (HSA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and bovine serum can reduce the cytotoxic activity of (20S) G-Rh2 in HepG2 cells. Results: In phage display, (20S) G-Rh2-beads and (20R) G-Rh2-beads were combined with numerous kinds of phages, and a total of 111 different human complementary DNAs (cDNA) were identified, including HSA which had the highest rate. The binding constant and number of binding site in the interaction between (20S)-Rh2 and HSA were $3.5{\times}10^5M^{-1}$ and 1, and those in the interaction between (20S) G-Rh2 and BSA were $1.4{\times}10^5M^{-1}$ and 1. The quenching mechanism is static quenching. HSA, BSA and bovine serum significantly reduced the proapoptotic effect of (20S) G-Rh2. Conclusion: HSA and BSA interact with (20S) G-Rh2. Serum inhibited the activity of (20S) G-Rh2 mainly due to the interaction between (20S) G-Rh2 and serum albumin (SA). This study proposes that HSA may enhance (20S) G-Rh2 water solubility, and thus might be used as nanoparticles in the (20S) G-Rh2 delivery process.

  • Seaweed has high growth rate, low land usage, high CO2 absorption and no competition for food resources. Therefore, the use of lignin-free seaweed as a raw material is arising as a third generation biomass for bioethanol production. Various pretreatment techniques have been introduced to enhance the overall hydrolysis yield, and can be categorized into physical, chemical, biological, enzymatic or a combination. Thermal acid hydrolysis pretreatment is one of the most popular methods to attain high sugar yields from seaweed biomass for economic reasons. At thermal acid hydrolysis conditions, the 3,6-anhydro-galactose (AHG) from biomass could be converted to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which might inhibit the cell growth and decrease ethanol production. AHG is prone to decomposition into HMF, due to its acid-labile character, and subsequently into weak acids such as levulinic acid and formic acid. These inhibitors can retard yeast growth and reduce ethanol productivity during fermentation. Thus, the carbohydrates in seaweed require effective treatment methods to obtain a high concentration of monosaccharides and a low concentration of inhibitor HMF for ethanol fermentation. The efficiency of bioethanol production from the seaweed biomass hydrolysate is assessed by separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF). To improve the efficiency of the ethanol fermentation of mixed monosaccharides, the adaptation of yeast to high concentration of sugar could make simultaneous utilization of mixed monosaccharides for the production of ethanol from seaweed.
