Improving the Endurance Life of Deep Groove Ball Bearings for Automotive Transmission (자동차 변속기용 깊은 홈 볼 베어링의 내구수명 향상)

  • Automotive transmission systems are assembled with a large number of gears and shafts, and rolling bearings are used to ensure their smooth operation. Gear oil in the gear box contains solid particles such as wear debris from contacting gears and metallic chips. This particle-enriched lubricating oil can cause premature failure of the rolling bearings. Research aimed at improving the service life of these rolling bearings has been confined mainly to design and lubrication of the inner/outer rings and the rolling elements. In this paper, we redesigned the shape of the cage pocket of a deep groove ball bearing to reduce the premature failure due to particle contamination. Test bearings are assembled with this new cage design containing a hole punched in the cage pocket. Endurance tests are carried out using the contaminated lubricating oil with miracle grid as hard particle. The duration and damaged bearing component shapes are compared for two different cages. The B10 life of bearing with new cage is increased by about 66% compared to the conventional cage. This is because the hard particles can be easily discharged through the pocket hole without staying for a long time in the lubrication regions. This greatly decreases abrasive wear and dents on the highly stressed ball bearing surfaces. Therefore, the cage design of this study, containing a pocket hole, can significantly delay the premature failure of rolling bearings and improve the endurance life.

Comparison of abrasive wear characteristics according to particle size of newly developed dental alumina ceramic dressers (새롭게 개발된 치과용 알루미나 세라믹 드레서의 입자 크기에 따른 연삭 마모 특성의 비교)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop dental alumina ceramic dressers, evaluate their abrasive wear characteristics based on particle size, and identify dental dressers with optimal particle size and performance. Methods: Commercial ceramic dressers (n=5) were selected as the control group, whereas alumina ceramic dressers with 80-grit and 120-grit particles were fabricated as the experimental groups (n=5 each). Prepared specimens were assessed for surface roughness, wear resistance, and abrasiveness against a wear-inducing element (SUS304 stainless steel ball). Means and standard deviations were calculated for each test. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis H test with Bonferroni correction (α=0.05) via SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0 (IBM). Results: Surface roughness was highest in the 80-grit group (22.734±1.308 ㎛), followed by 120-grit group (21.804±0.785 ㎛), and lowest in control group (15.782±0.223 ㎛). Wear resistance was greatest in 120-grit group (0.007±0.002 g), followed by the 80-grit group (0.007±0.004 g), and lowest in the control group (0.370±0.010 g). Furthermore, abrasiveness against the wear-inducing element (SUS304 stainless steel ball) was highest in 120-grit group (0.017±0.003 g), followed by the 80-grit group (0.015±0.003 g), and lowest in control group (0.010±0.001 g). Conclusion: Based on the combined results of surface roughness, wear resistance, and abrasiveness against a wear-inducing element, the newly developed alumina ceramic dressers show promise for clinical application.

Sediment monitoring for hydro-abrasive erosion: A field study from Himalayas, India

  • Sediment flow through hydropower components causes hydro-abrasive erosion resulting in loss of efficiency, interruptions in power production and downtime for repair/maintenance. Online instruments are required to measure/capture the variations in sediment parameters along with collecting samples manually to analyse in laboratory for verification. In this paper, various sediment parameters viz. size, concentration (TSS), shape and mineral composition relevant to hydro-abrasive erosion were measured and discussed with respect to a hydropower plant in Himalayan region, India. A multi-frequency acoustic instrument was installed at a desilting chamber to continuously monitor particle size distribution (PSD) and TSS entering the turbine during 27 May to 6 August 2015. The sediment parameters viz. TSS, size distribution, mineral composition and shape entering the turbine were also measured and analysed, using manual samples collected twice daily from hydropower plant, in laboratory with instruments based on laser diffraction, dynamic digital image processing, gravimetric method, conductivity, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and turbidity. The acoustic instrument was able to capture the variation in TSS; however, significant deviations were found between measured mean sediment sizes compared to values found in the laboratory. A good relation was found for turbidity ($R^2=0.86$) and laser diffraction ($R^2=0.93$) with TSS, which indicated that turbidimeter and laser diffraction instrument can be used for continuous monitoring of TSS at the plant. Total sediment load passed through penstock during study period was estimated to be 15,500 ton. This study shall be useful for researchers and hydropower managers in measuring/monitoring sediment for hydro-abrasive erosion study in hydropower plants.

Characteristics by Surfactant Condition at Copper CMP (구리 CMP시 비이온 계면활성제의 알루리마 슬러리 안정성에 대한 효과)

  • In this study, physical characteristics of alumina slurry on variation of pH value and the effect of non-ionic surfactants on alumina slurry for copper chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry have been investigated. After pH value of the slurry with alumina abrasive was changed by adding various amount of $HNO^3$ or KOH, the differences of settling rate, particle size, and zeta-potential were estimated. Better settling rates were shown in slurries with alumina abrasive at near pH 1. Higher zeta-potential was shown at around pH 2 in alumina slurry and the point of zero charge (PZC) was measured at about pH $9\sim10$. Non-ionic surfactant was added in the slurry with 5wt% alumina abrasive to get its effect on slurry practically. Abrasive size was smaller increased when amount of surfactant increased in slurry with P-4 as abrasive; on the other side, it was smaller when amount of surfactant decreased with AES-12. Variation of zeta-potential has no tendency with adding surfactant; however, values of zeta-potential were between $35\sim50mV$. The proper amount of surfactant was $0.1\sim1.0wt%$ in slurry with P-4 and $0.5\sim1.0wt%$ in slurry with AES-12 respectively. Wear Characteristics of Particulate Reinforced Metal Matrix Composites Fabricated by a Pressureless Metal Infiltration Process (무가압함침법으로 제조된 입자강화 금속복합재료의 마모특성)

  • The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles, with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by the pressureless infiltration process. The metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times the wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and by increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction, the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity, linearly : whereas, metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at the slow velocity region. However, a transition point of wear loss was found at the middle velocity region, which shows the minimum wear loss. Further, wear loss at the high velocity region exhibited nearly the same value as the slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites generally exhibited abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity; however, AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

An experimental study on the picosecond laser dressing of bronze-bonded diamond wheels

  • In this paper, a pulsed picosecond laser dressing method for bronze-bonded diamond wheel is studied systematically and comprehensively. The picosecond laser pulse ablation experiment is carried out, and the ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded and diamond abrasive particle are measured respectively. The results indicate that the single-pulse ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded are 0.89J/cm2, 0.24J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. And the multi-pulse ablation thresholds of diamond abrasive particle are 1.69J/cm2, 0.49J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. Obviously, diamond grains have less thermal damage during the process of gentle ablation. The diamond grains of the grinding wheel surface are graphitized during laser dressing. The bronze-bonded is relatively smooth and organizational stability, and the diamond grits have suitable prominent height, which are beneficial to maintain the good grinding performance of dressed bronze-bonded diamond grinding wheels.

Surface Finishing Technique for Micro 3-Dimensional Structures Using ER Fluid

  • In this study, the electrorheological (ER) fluid was used as finishing agent. Since the apparent viscosity can be controlled by an electric field, the ER fluid can be one of efficient materials in finishing processes. To finish small 3-dimensional structures such as the aspherical surface in optical elements, the possible arrangement of a tool, part and auxiliary electrode was described. We examined the influence of the addition of a few abrasive particles on the performance of the ER fluid by measuring yield stress and observed the behavior of abrasive particles in the ER fluid by a CCD camera, which had been also theoretically predicted from the electromechanical principles of particles. On the basis of the above results, the steady flow analysis around the rotating micro tool was performed considering the non-uniform electric field. Finally, borosilicate glass was finished using the mixture of the ER fluid and abrasive particles and material removal with field strength and surface roughness were investigated.

  • In this paper, slurry fluid motion, abrasive particle motion, and roles of groove patterns on the pads are numerically investigated in the 2D and 3D geometries. The simulation results are analyzed in terms of experimental removal rate and WIWNU (within wafer non-uniformity) for ILD (inter level dielectric) CMP process. Numerical investigations reveal that the grooves in the pad behave as uniform distributor of abrasive particles and enhance the removal rate by increasing shear stress. Higher removal rate and desirable uniformity are numerically and experimentally observed at the pad with grooves. Numerical analysis is very well matched with experimental results and helpful for understanding polishing mechanism and local physics.

  • This paper shows the failure(wear) phenomena of automotive transmission bearings and investigate their characteristics. It was found that the wear mechanism was mainly abrasive wear by the presence of particles in the gear box and the balls was weared more severely than the other tribological contacting parts. The wear of balls alter the bearing contact angle and load ratings, and finally it cause the bearing failure. With close examination of the failed bearing, various countermeasures could be suggested.
