Abdominal obesity is considered as one of the most risky factors governing the development of metabolic diseases. Here we identify that human chitinase 3-like 1 (CHI3L1, also called YKL-40 in human) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs883125, is associated with abdominal obesity in Korean women. Korean women subjects with the rs883125 G/G or C/G genotype present higher waist-hip ratio than subjects with C/C genotype suggesting that human subjects who G nucleotide substitution at the rs883125 tended to more accumulate intra-abdominal fat at the abdominal cavity. In addition, Chi3l1 gene expression is increased in adipose tissue from obese mice and pro-inflammatory cytokine enhances Chi3l1 expression in adipocytes, indicating that Chi3l1 is greatly related with obesity and obesity-induced pro-inflammatory responses. Taken together, the minor allele of rs883125 is associated with a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity in Korean women. These findings suggest that genotype of rs883125 can be a biomarker of incident abdominal obesity and abdominal obesity-related metabolic diseases.

Septicemic polyserositis and navel ill associated with Escherichia coli were reported in a 14-day-old male thoroughbred foal. The horse died after showing 12-day history of anorexia, lethargy, lameness and endophthalmus. Grossly, milky yellow abscesses were occupied in umbilicus, umbilical vein and artery. Large amounts of turbid pale yellow fluids were seen in pericardial sac, thoracic and abdominal cavity. Yellowish fibrinous materials were also presented in thoracic and abdominal cavity. Sticky pale yellow fluid and fibrinous materials were filled in stifle joint cavities of both hind limbs. Histologically, fibrino-purulent polyserositis and arthritis were observed. Severe omphalophlebitis with intra-lesional Gram negative bacterial colonies were noted in umbilical vein. Most of mesothelial cells in serosal cavities were severely hypertrophied. Pathogenic E. coli was purely isolated from ascites, thoracic and synovial fluids. Based on the results, the septicemic polyserositis may be originated from the umbilical cord infected with E. coli in this foal.
A visceral helminth of the squid, Todarodes pacificus, is reported from the East Sea, the Republic of Korea. Total 39 squid samples were purchased from a fish market in Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si (City) from August 2014 to July 2015 and were examined for helminth parasites with naked eyes and under a stereomicroscope after opening the abdominal cavity with a pair of scissors. Whitish larval worms were mainly found in the stomach and abdominal cavity of the squid. They were detected in 25 (64.1%) out of 39 squids examined, and the infection density was 7 larvae per infected squid. Spatula-shaped larvae were $8.2{\times}2.0mm$ in average size, round to slightly flattened anteriorly, with round hatching posteriorly, and had characteristic 4 tentacles with numerous hooklets in the scolex. The larvae were identified as the plerocercoid stage of Nybelinia surmenicola by their morphological features. This finding represents a new host record and the first report of N. surmenicola infection in T. pacificus squids from the east coast of Korea.
We investigated the relative growth and squamation of larvae and juveniles of cultured Larimichthys polyactis. Analysis of the relative growth of larvae and juveniles showed that their preanal length, head length, eye diameter, body depth, and snout length increased with growth. There was no significant chage in the relative growth. The ratio of preanus length to standard length (SL) increased rapidly until SL was approximately 12 mm, and then increased gradually. Cycloid scales first appeared on the lateral line, progressed to the abdominal cavity at 15.13 mm SL, and expanded to the occipital region, base of pectoral fin, and ventral region of the eye at 17.82 mm SL. At 18.03 mm SL, scales formed on the cheek, and those at the base of pectoral fin and in the abdominal cavity were connected to each other. At 19.06 mm SL, major part of the head was covered by scales, except near the lower jaw. Cycloid scales on the lateral line changed to ctenoid scales at the range of 31.71-32.24 mm SL, and those on the nape changed at the range of 69.02-70.84 mm SL. Our results may help to establish conservation and management strategy for Larimichthys polyactis aquaculture.
Laparoscopic surgery is a well-established alternative to open surgery across disciplines. However, in veterinary medicine, laparoscopic surgery in dogs was rarely reported because of small abdominal size for multiple ports insertion. The concept of single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is to perform the entire laparoscopic operation through a single incision rather than conventional multiple small skin incisions. Indirect evidence of potential benefits of SILS, decreases operative morbidity related to reduction in port size, already exists. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the modified form of SILS using flexible endoscope in Cholecystectomy before clinical adoption. A 2 cm single periumbilical incision was performed, and flexible endoscope was introduced into the abdominal cavity. A laparoscopic grasper was inserted into the abdominal cavity for the traction of gall bladder. Cystic duct and artery were ligated by 5 mm Hem-o-lok$^{(R)}$. Then, gall bladder was dissected and resected from the liver with 5 mm Autonomy Laparo-Angle Maryland dissector and endoscopic needle knife. Resected gall bladder was wrapped by using specimen pouch and was retrieved through abdominal incision from the cavity. All three gall bladders were successfully removed. Hematological changes were not observed during examination periods. No leakage sign was identified at necropsy. The flexible endoscope, as distinct from conventional rigid laparoscope, allows the visualization from various angles and the wide range of motion, result in less crowding.
In freshwater ecosystems, the types of fish parasites are diverse and routes of infection are complicated because they maintain the life cycle in a variety of host animals, The present study investigated the infestation characteristics of parasites occurring in abdominal cavity of Zacco platypus in Seom River from February to October 2007. At the same time, four streams (Gam Stream, Daepo Stream, Yangsan Stream, and Yulha Stream) were also surveyed for the reference of fish infection. Aquatic insects and shellfish predominated benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages by 90.4% and 7.7% of relative abundance, respectively. Aquatic insects were composed mostly of Ephemeroptera (46.8%) and Trichoptera (29.8%), and shellfish was Gastropods. Freshwater fish was most abundant Cyprinid and Z. platypus by 85.7% and 48.8%, respectively. Among waterfowl, Anas poecilorhyncha and Egretta garzetta were dominant in August. Fish parasites observed in the abdominal cavity of Z. platypus was classified as Ligula intestinalis, belonging to Phylum Platyhelminthes Cestoda Pseudophyllidae. L. intestinalis was observed from Z. platypus in October, as the number of one individual in the Seom River and fifteen individuals in the Yangsan Stream. Infection rate of plerocercoid ranged 1.4~15.8%. We discussed the relationship between the life cycle of the parasite and the host, and hope our results to be useful for understanding the ecology of the fish abdominal parasites in Korean river ecosystem.
The entry of antipyrine and urea from the peritoneal cavity of rabbit into organ tissue and blood plasma was studied. Two hundred mg of antipyrine plus 300 mg of urea in 10 ml Ringer's solution was injected into the peritoneal cavity of anesthetized rabbit. The injection was made from above of a rabbit kept tying right side down and it enabled part of the abdominal organs (liver, intestine, kidney) was immersed in the injected solution and kept high concentration gradient throughout the experimental period. The remaining part of the organs was revered only by a thin film of the test solution. Subsequently, in this part of the organs the concentration gradient of the diffusible substances during entry was presumed to decrease as time elapsed. Four pieces of the liver tissue were taken namely, the right superficial, right deep, left superficial and left deep portions. Two were taken from the small intestine, one from the portion which was immersed in. the fluid and the other from that above the fluid mass. Both kidneys were separately analyzed. As a remote organ the gastrocnemius muscle was taken from the right leg of the animal. The intervals which were the time periods elapsed after injections were 5,7,10,15 or 30 minutes. At each point 5 animals were sacrificed and the concentrations of the test substances in the tissue water were measured. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In the liver the right portion which was immersed in the fluid showed higher concentration if the test substances than the left portion and the superficial region exceeded the deep region. The concentrations diminished as the time elapsed after infusion, particulary in the case of antipyrine, suggesting circulatory removal of the substances. In urea such decreasing tendency of the concentration was not obvious, and suggested slower removal rate of it as compared with that of antipyrine. 2. In the small intestine there was no regional difference in the concentration of the test substances. Because of the intestinal motility different portions of the intestine were seemed to have bathed in the fluid of the same concentration. In general the concentrations in the intestinal wall exceeded those of the liver, suggesting a slower removal rate than in the latter. 3. In the kidney the accumulation of the endogenous urea was predominant, and the accumulating mechanism in the renal tissue went on during the period of the experiment. Therefore it revealed increasing tendencies as the time elapsed. The penetration of the test substances in this organ from the peritoneal cavity seemed to be slower than in other abdominal organs, namely liver or small intestine. Part of the test substances in the kidney were obviously brought by the blood stream. 4. Rapid exponential decay of the concentration of antipyrine and of the osmolality of the peritoneal fluid was attributed to the extensive removal through the whole dimension of the peritoneal surface, and the remote organ such as the gastrocnemius muscle attained a fairly close value to that of the abdominal organs in less than 30 minutes. The factors which related to the absorption rate were discussed. They were the concentration gradient, permeability and the regional perfusion rate.
The bovine fat necrosis is often seen as an incidental lesion in the adipose tissues of the abdominal cavity. Most of affected animals, however, have been detected at the slaughter house or routine necropsy. The purpose of this study was to examine the occurrence and distribution of abdominal fat necrosis in Korean native cattle, and its pathologic features. Postmortem inspection at an Chonju abattoir during a three-month period in 1997 detected at necrosis lesions in 67(6.6%) of the 1,012 animals received for slaughter. The occurrence was mainly in alimentary tracts and perirenal. Both sexes were affected, but the lesion were predominantly occurred in female. Gross lesions were white or yellowish in color and formed hard lumps irregular in shape ranging from small nodules to large solid masses. On the cut surface, lesions were occasionally seen chalky calcified granules and some of the lesions contained oil-like fluid. The surface of irregular shaped masses constricted kidneys and intestinal loops. Microscopically, the masses were encapsulated by thickened fibrous tissue, which infiltrated deeply and divided them into many irregular lobules. Initial lesions presented mild inflammatory cell and fibrous proliferation. It became fibroplasia in progressive lesions and resembled chronic lesion, eventhough no grossly apparent inflammatory reaction. The hard consistency of masses, due to fibroplasia, can compress the intestines, urinary organs, and reproductive organs.
Ascites is the retention of body fluids in abdominal cavity, which is induced by salt increase, and disorders in such things as water retention and albumin synthesis. Ascites are especially common in cases of progressed liver cirrhosis and metastatic cancer. One patient was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and Metastatic cancer at Rt. liver from Lt. ovarian tumor by abdominal CT. To measure the response to treatment of ascites, these clinical symptoms were observed: weight, abdominal circumference, and lab findings. Clinical symptoms and ascites were improved after oriental medical treatment. Abdominal circumference decreased. Results suggest oriental medical treatment was effective for this patient for this disease, but more extensive research is needed.
A 8-year-old spayed female Korean short-haired cat was presented with respiratory distress. CBC, serum chemistry analysis, plain radiography, and abdominal ultrasonography were performed. Besides hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) suspected by the thoracic radiograph, a tubular, tortuous soft tissue structure was detected at the region of the left retroperitoneal cavity on the abdominal radiograph. On the abdominal ultrasonography, a shunt vessel is identified caudo-lateral to the left kidney region. These findings are consistent with spleno-systemic shunts in cats. Furthermore, portal hypertension and diffuse hepatic lesion were also identified. Although the cause of a shunt vessel is not easy to diagnose, it is important to include spleno-systemic shunt into differential diagnosis list, when convoluted, tubular soft tissue opacity is seen on the digital radiography (DR). This report will allow clinicians to raise awareness of complications of portosystemic shunt (PSS) and better treat PSS suspected feline patients when the advanced modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are not available.
