  • Optimized geometrical structure, atomic charges, molecular electrostatic potential, nonlinear optical (NLO) effects and thermodynamic properties of the title compound N-(2,5-methylphenyl)salicylaldimine (I) have been investigated by using ab initio quantum chemical computational studies. Calculated results showed that the enol form of (I) is more stable than keto form. The solvent effect was investigated for obtained molecular energies, hardneses and the atomic charge distributions of (I). Natural bond orbital and frontier molecular orbital analysis of the title compound were also performed. The total molecular dipole moment (${\mu}$), linear polarizability (${\alpha}$), and first-order hyperpolarizability (${\beta}$) were calculated by B3LYP method with 6-31G(d), 6-31+G(d,p), 6-31++G(d,p), 6-311+G(d) and 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets to investigate the NLO properties of the compound (I). The standard thermodynamic functions were obtained for the title compound with the temperature ranging from 200 to 450 K.

  • Using ab initio calculations, we study the MgO(001) and Fe/MgO(001) surface phases and the effects of interface structure on the Fe/MgO magnetic anisotropy. The surface phase diagrams of MgO(001) and Fe/MgO(001) show that the most stable surface structures are either defect-free surface or the surfaces with oxygen vacancies in c($2{\times}1$) periodicity for the systems. By the formations of the oxygen vacancy rows on MgO(001) surface, the in-plane magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe overlayer is reduced while the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy is increased from 0.1 to 0.5 meV per Fe atom.

  • Using first principles calculations, we investigated the interface structure effects on the magnetic properties of the Fe/BaTiO3 system. On the BaO-terminated surface, a Fe monolayer is formed as two Fe atoms are adsorbed on the top sites of Ba and O in the ($1{\times}1$) surface unit and a Fe ML is formed on the TiO2-terminated surface as two Fe atoms are adsorbed on the two O top sites. The magnetic anisotropy energy of Fe was higher on the TiO2?-erminated surface (1.5 eV) than on the BaO-terminated surface (0.5 eV). The decomposed electron density of the states showed that the stronger hybridization of Fe with the TiO2 layer than with the BaO layer is the most important reason for the higher magnetic anisotropy energy.

  • The structures and energies of p-tert-butylcalix[4]crown-6-ether(1) in various conformers and their alkyl ammonium complexes have been calculated by ab initio HF/6-31G quantum mechanics method. We have tried to obtain the relative affinity of partial-cone and 1,3-alternate conformers of 1 for alkyl ammonium guests by comparison with its cone-shaped analogue. We have also calculated the relative complexation efficiency of these host-guest complexes focusing on the binding sites of $crown-\sigma-enther$ moiety or benzene-rings pocket of the host molecule 1. These calculations revealed that the crown moiey has better complexation efficiency than upper rim part of calyx[4]arene that is in similar trend to the cone-shaped complexes.

  • Ab initio periodic Hartree-Fock calculations with the full potential and minimum basis set are applied to interpretation of scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) images on 1TVTe2. Our results show that the simulated STM image shows asymmetry while the simulated AFM image shows the circular electron densities at the bright spots without asymmetry of electron density to agree with the experimental AFM image. The bright spots of both the STM and AFM images of VTe2 are associated with the surface Te atoms, while the patterns of bright spots of STM and AFM images are different.

  • Theoretical investigations are carried out on the title reaction by means of ab-initio and DFT methods. The optimized geometries, frequencies and minimum energy path are obtained at UB3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. Single point energy calculations are performed at MP2 and MP4 levels of theory. Energetics are further refined by calculating the energy of the species with a modified Gaussian-2 method, G2M(CC,MP2). The rate constant of the reaction is calculated using Canonical Transition State Theory (CTST) utilizing the ab-initio data obtained during the present study and is found to be $5.47{\times}10^{-12}\;cm^3\;molecule^{-1}s^{-1}$ at 298 K and 1 atm.

  • The second order ab initio effective valence shall Hamiltonian ($H^v$) which is based on quasidegenerate many-body perturbation theory is applied to the SiH, PH, and their positive ions. A singie Hv computation for the neutral molecule is used for a whole set of valence states of a molecule and its ion simultaneously. The low-lying valence state potential energy curves of SiH, PH and their positive ions are computed. And various spectroscopic constants of the low-lying bound valence states are determined from the potential energy curves. The $H^v$ results are found to be in good agreement with other theoretical and experimental data.

  • The structures and energies for the intramolecular rearrangement in $d^8-MCl(PH_3)_2$(HC≡CPh), M=Rh and Ir, complexes were studied by ab initio method at the Hartree-Fock and MP2 levels of theory. Three transition states in two pathways were optimized and characterized by frequency calculations. The activation energies for the process of π-type complex 1 to hydrido-alkynyl 2 have been computed to be relatively low 6.97 and 21.33 kcal/mol at MP2 level for Rh and Ir metals, respectively. However, the activation energies for a 1,2-hydrogen shift via t.s.3 have been computed to be high 50.83 and 60.05 kcal/mol for Rh and Ir metals.

  • The crystal and molecular structure of thiourea dioxide, (NH2)2CSO2, was determined by x-ray single crystal diffraction techniques. Lattice constants are a=10.669(2), b=10.119(2), and c=3.9151(5) Å with the space group Pnma and Z=4. The thiourea portion of the molecule has a planar conformation. When the two oxygen atoms are included, the sulfur atom is at the apex of a trigonal pyramid formed with the two oxygen atoms and the carbon atom as the base. The crystal structure is stabilized by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Ab initio calculations were performed to investigate the bonding features and reactivity of thiourea dioxide. The calculated bond order of S-C is only 0.481. The hydrogen bond energy was computed to be 22.3 kcal/mol for dimer. MEP analysis reveals that the sites on nucleophilic reactions are S and C atoms.

  • Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra were measured for fluorene (FR) cooled in pulsed supersonic expansions of He in the range 283.7-296.7 nm. Ab initio studies of FR have also been carried out for determining the electronic and vibrational structures by using the standard 3-21G basis sets. In the LIF excitation spectra of FR, highly resolved vibronic bands are observed having the band origin of 33,791 cm-1. The vibrational bands above the electronic origin were assigned on the basis of the well-characterized electronic vibrational bands reported previously and of normal modes of vibrations derived by our HF/3-21G calculations.
