  • Buserties are known to have layer structures with variable C dimension which depended on the nature interlayer catious and contents of water molecular between edge-sharing [MnO6] octabedral layers. Na-, Ca-, Mg-, and Zn-buserties were synthesized in the laboratory and studied for to know the structural states of water molecules and the role of catious in the buserite structures. With lowering the relative humidity(RH), Ca-buserite begins to dehydrate at 27% RH and proceeds further very slowly. Mg- and Zn- buserite also slow dehydration above 2% RH. With gradual ineveasing temperature Ca- and Zn-buserite show abrupt shifting of 10$\AA$ peak (10$\AA$-phare) toward 7$\AA$ peak. All of 7$\AA$-phare are further dehydrated to 5$\AA$-phare by further increasing temperature. It suggests that interlayer catious play a crucial role in the dehydration behavious of buserites. Simulation of one-dimensional X-ray diffraction patterns of buserties show that buserites have three layers of water molecules of different types: the very loosely bound and tightly bend waters, instead of two layers that was regarded by previous authers. The very loosely bound water is sited I open space of the interlayer, the loosely bound water is bound on the tightly bound water by hydrogen bond, and the tightly bond water in coodinately bound on the interlayer catious.

  • The methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase/cyclohydrolase (MTHFDC) from the thermoacidophilic archaeon Thermoplasma acidophilum is a 30.6kDa molecular-mass enzyme that sequentially catalyzes the conversion of formyltetrahydrofollate to methylenetetrahydrofolate, with a preference for NADP as a cofactor, rather than NAD. In order to elucidate the functional and structural features of MTHFDC from archaeons at a molecular level, it was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and crystallized in the presence of its cofactor, NADP, at 295K using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 4000 as a precipitant. The crystal is a member of the monoclinic space group $P2_1$, with the following unit cell parameters: $a=66.333{\AA},\;b=52.868{\AA},\;c=86.099{\AA},\;and\;{\beta}=97.570^{\circ}$, and diffracts to a resolution of at least $2.40{\AA}$ at the synchrotron. Assuming a dimer in the crystallographic asymmetric unit, the calculated Matthews parameter $(V_M)\;was\;2.44{\AA}^3/Da$ and the solvent content was 49.7%.

  • Deep blue organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated using 5 wt.% doped BCzVBi with various blue host materials such as NPB, DPVBi, MADN and TPBi. A blue OLED device, using DPVBi as host material, was constructed via NPB ($500\;{\AA}$) / DPVBi:BCzVBi ($200\;{\AA}$) / Bphen ($300\;{\AA}$) / LiF ($20\;{\AA}$) / Al ($1,000\;{\AA}$) and it shows a maximum luminescence of $4,838\;cd/m^2$, a current density of $32.7\;mA/cm^2$, a luminous efficiency of 3.3 cd/A and CIExy coordinates of (0.19, 0.15) at 4.5 V whereas the luminous efficiencies and CIExy coordinates of other blue OLEDs using NPB, MADN and TPBi as host materials have 1.1, 2.6 and 2.0 cd/A and (0.15, 0.11), (0.15, 0.10) and (0.15, 0.10), respectively. Energy transfer mechanisms between BCzVBi and its host materials were discussed with an energy band structure of host materials.

  • Chloride ion is one of the most important corrosive agents in atmospheric corrosion, especially in marine environments. It has high adsorption rate and increases the conductivity of electrolytes. Since chloride ions affect the protective properties and the surface composition of the corrosion product, they increase the corrosion rate. A low level of chloride ions leads to uniform corrosion, whereas a high level of chloride ions may induce localized corrosion. However, higher solution temperatures tend to increase the corrosion rate by enhancing the migration of oxygen in the solution. This work focused on the effect of NaCl concentration and temperature on galvanic corrosion between A516Gr.55 carbon steel and AA7075T6 aluminum alloys. When AA7075T6 aluminum alloy was galvanically coupled to A516Gr.55 carbon steel, AA7075T6 was severely corroded regardless of NaCl concentration and solution temperature, unlike the corrosion properties of single specimen. The combined effect of surface treatment involving carbon steel and aluminum alloy on corrosion behavior was also discussed.

  • Fifty-two Holstein cows with different phenotypes of $\kappa$-casein ($\kappa$-CN) and $\beta$-lactoglobulin ($\beta$-LG) were selected to provide weekly milk samples for heating at 30, 70, 75 and $80^{\circ}C$ for 2 min. Coagulating properties of heated milk samples measured as rennet clotting time, rate of curd firming and curd firmness at cutting were determined by a Formagraph. Milk samples were analysed for fat and casein. Least squares analyses of data, after adjustments were made for effect of milk casein and fat contents, indicated that although an increase in heating temperatures resulted in less desirable coagulating properties, the effect of milk types was inherent irrespective of heating temperatures. The shortest rennet clotting time (6.06 min), fastest rate of curd firming (5.61 min) and firmest curd (38.05 mm) were obtained from milk with the B variant for $\kappa$-CN and B variant for $\beta$ -LG when preheated at $30^{\circ}C$. It appears that milk bearing $\kappa$-CN B is more resistant to heat perturbation. All milk samples having the $\kappa$-casein AA (milk types AA/AA, AA/AB, AA/BB) did not have a measurable K20 value when preheated at $70^{\circ}C$. This effect was observed for $\kappa$-casein AB (milk types AB/AA, AB/AB, AB/BB) at $75^{\circ}C$ and $\kappa$-casein BB (milk types BB/AA, BB/AB, BB/BB) at $80^{\circ}C$.

  • Hectorite was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and its physicochemical properties have been investigated in terms of temperature, pH, and organic agent to observe the change of doll basal spacing. The IR, CEC, MB, swelling volume and specific surface area of the hectorite were measured for the characterization. The solid/liquid ratio of hectorite to distilled water before mixing with other materials was also determined for its use as a multi-functional material. The $d_{001}$ basal spacing decreased from $12.63\;\AA$ at room temperature to $10.19\;\AA$ at $650^{\circ}C$ in the heating tests. As the pH of hectorite slurry increased. the $d_{001}$ basal spacing decreased. reaching the lowest value of $13.33\;\AA$ at pH 7 and afterward, increased. All the fool basal spacings of the hectorite increased when it was intercalated with the following solvents: $12.86\;\AA$ in diethyl ether, $13.31\;\AA$ in acetonitrile. $13.59\;\AA$ in methanol, $14.05\;\AA$ in ethanol, $15.69\;\AA$ in acetone, and $17.42\;\AA$ in ethylene glycol. Our IR analysis results were in good agreement with those of other researchers. The CEC, MB, swelling volume and specific surface area of hectorite were determined to be 105 cmol/kg, 80 cmol/kg, $68\sim74ml/2g$ and $213m^{2}/g$, respectively. Also, the hectorite to distilled water ratio of 2 to 100 was found to be most favorable for mixing with other materials such as the solvents mentioned above.

  • Copper-chromium multilayers with a nominal bilayer thickness of about 400 $\AA$ (200 $\AA$ each) were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering and the evolution of microstructure during heat treatment was investigated by using x-ray diffractometry(XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy(AES) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). It was observed that an amorphous phase with a thickness of about 40 $\AA$ was formed at the interfaces of the as-deposited Cu/Cr multilayered film using cross-sectional TEM. At elevated temperatures, the Cu(111) reflection showed increasing intensity and decreasing line-width as a result of copper grain growth. The intermixed amorphous phase disappeared after annealing at $250^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and the multilayer structure was stable up to $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h annealing. At $600^{\circ}C$ annealing, it was observed that the multilayer structure was completely destroyed and copper and chromium phases were fully intermixed.
