This study aimed at providing an experimental database for the mechanical properties of AZ31B magnesium alloy sheet such as stress-strain curve, yield stress, R-value and forming limit diagram(FLD) at various strain-rates and temperatures. Tensile tests were carried out on specimens having the orientations of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ to the rolling direction with different crosshead speeds in the range between 0.008 and 8 mm/s at temperature from 25(room temperature) to $300^{\circ}C$. The influence of the specimen gage length on the tensile properties was investigated. FLD tests were performed at punch speed of 0.1 and 1.0 mm/s in the same temperature range as that of the tensile tests. Swift cup tests were conducted to verify the usefulness of the material database and the reliability of the finite element analysis(FEA). The effects of strain-rate as well as temperature were taken into account in these simulations. It was shown that the FLD-based failure was reasonably well predicted by the thermal-deformation coupled analysis for this rate-sensitive material.
Magnesium alloy have good physical properties such as good castability, good vibration absorption, high strength/weight ratios. Despite the desirable properties, the poor resistance of Mg alloy impedes their use in many various applications. Therefore, magnesium alloy require surface treatment to improve hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is one the surface treatment methods to form oxide layer on Mg alloy in alkali electrolyte. In comparison with Anodizing, there is environmental process having higher hardness and faster deposition rate. In this study, the characteristics of oxide film were examined after coating the AZ31 Mg alloy through the PEO process. We changed concentration of sodium aluminate into $K_2ZrF_6$, KF base electrolyte. The morphologies of the coating layer were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion resistance also investigated by potentiodynamic polarization analysis. As a result, propertiy of oxide layer were changed by concentration of sodium aluminate. Increasing with concentration of sodium aluminate in electrolyte, the oxidation layer was denser and the pore size was smaller on the surface.
With a tendency for the application of thin magnesium alloy plates in portable electronic equipment such as cell phone and notebook PC, there is a requirement to develop a welding technology for the lap welding of these thin magnesium alloy. This paper presents the single pulsed laser welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy. The effects of fiber types and parameters such as peak power and pulse width on laser weldability were investigated. The results show that weld defects, especially solidification crack, were always generated in the weld. These defects couldn't be controlled by the simple square pulse, but could be improved through the application of variable pulse. It is because that variable pulse has effect of solidification delay by dropping peak power gradually.
Magnesium alloys are expected to be widely used for the parts of structural and electronic applications due to their lightweight and EMI shielding characteristics. While the die casting has been mainly used to manufacture the parts from the magnesium alloys, the press forming is considered as an alternative to the die casting for saving the manufacturing cost and improving the structural strength of the magnesium alloy parts. However, the magnesium alloy has low formability at room temperature and therefore, in many cases, forming at elevated temperatures is necessary to obtain the required material flow without failure. In the present study, square cup deep drawing tests using the magnesium alloy AZ31 sheet were experimentally conducted at various elevated temperatures as well as room temperature, and the corresponding finite-element simulations, which calculated the damage evolution based on the Oyane's criterion, were conducted using the stress-strain relations from the tensile tests at various temperatures. The formability predictability by the finite-element analysis was investigated by comparing the predicted damage distributions over the deformed AZ31 sheet at elevated temperatures with the corresponding experimental deformations with failures.
Weldability of Friction Stir Welded(FSW) AZ31B-H24 Mg alloy sheet with 4m thick was evaluated by changing welding speed. The sound welding conditions mainly depended on the suffiicient welding heat input during the process. The insufficient heat input resulted in the void like defect in the weld zone. Higher welding speed caused a larger inner void or lack of bonding. The defects were distributed at the stir zone or the transition region between stir zone and thermo-mechanical affected zone (UE). The size of defects slightly increased with increasing welding speed. These defects had a great effect on the joint strength of weld zone. The weld zone was composed of stir zone, TMAZ and heat affected zone. The stir zone was cosisted of fine recrystallized structure with $5-8\mu\textrm{m}$ in the mean grain size. The hardness of weld zone was near the 60HV, which was slightly lower than that of base metal. The maximum joint strength was about 219MPa that was 75% of that of base metal and the yield strength was also lower than that of base metal partly due to the existance of defects.
In this paper, a transversely isotropic behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy produced by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) process was investigated through tensile test and microstructure observation. The effects of initial ECAP pass number on the anisotropic behavior and mechanical properties of the Mg alloy are evaluated after conventional direct extrusion test, which are carried out at a temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. As a result of the tensile test in three directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ to the extrusion direction of the sheet) at room temperature, elongation of as-extruded AZ31 alloy(ECAP for 0 pass) showed an unusual anisotropic behavior depending on the extrusion direction although the yield strength and tensile strength are similar to the ECAPed AZ31 alloy. After ECAP for 4 passes at $200^{\circ}C$, microstructural observations of ECAPed magnesium alloy showed a significant grain refinement, which is leading to an equiaxed grain structure with average size of $2.5{\mu}m$. The microstructures of the extruded billet are observed by the use of an electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) technique to evaluate of the influence on the grain refinement during extrusion process and re-crystallization mechanism of AZ31 Mg alloy.
In recent years, there has been a growth of the manufacture and application of magnesium products because of its small specific gravity as well as its relatively high strength. However, there are so many studies to assure good formability because magnesium sheet alloy is difficult to form. In this study, uniaxial tensile and biaxial tensile tests of AZ31 magnesium sheet alloy with thickness of 1.2mm were performed at room temperature. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed until $7{\%}$ of engineering strain. Lankford values and stress-strain curve were obtained. Biaxial tensile tests with cruciform specimen were performed until the breakdown of the specimen occurs. The yield loci were calculated by application of plastic work theory. The results are compared with the theoretical predictions based on the Hill and Logan-Hosford model. In this study, Hill's 1979 yield function for the case of m=2.8 and Logan-Hosford yield function for the case of M=8 give good agreements with experimental results. However, next study will be performed at warm-temperature because the specimens are broken under the $0.5{\%}$ of equivalent strain at biaxial tensile test.
The forming failure of AZ31 alloy sheet during deep drawing processes was predicted by the FEM and ductile fracture criteria. Uniaxial tensile tests of round-notched specimens and FE simulations were performed to calculate the critical damage values for three ductile fracture criteria. The critical damage values for each criterion were expressed as a function of strain rate at various temperatures. In order to determine the best criterion for failure prediction, Erichsen cupping test under isothermal conditions at $250^{\circ}C$ were conducted. Based on the plastic deformation histories obtained from the FE analysis of the Erichsen cupping tests and the critical damage value curves, the initiation time and location of fracture were predicted under bi-axial tension deformation. The results indicate that the Cockcroft-Latham criterion had good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the FE analysis combined with the criterion was applied to another deep drawing process using an irregular shaped blank and these additional results were verified with experimental tests.
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) technique had been adapted to the Mg alloy (AZ31) for achieving effective grain refinement through severe deformation. The average grain size of $2.5{\mu}m$ could be obtained after 4 passes. The stability of the ECAPed structure at elevated temperatures was examined by annealing the ECAPed materials over a wide range of temperature between 473 and 748 K. The average activation energy, Q, for static grain growth of 1, 2 and 3 passes was 33.7 kJ/mole (=0.25QL, activation for lattice diffusion). The abnormally low Q value in the lower temperature range may indicate that grain growth occurs in the unrecrystallized microstructure where non-equilibrium grain boundaries containing a large number of extrinsic dislocations exist. The yield stresses of the ECAPed alloys decreased whereas the elongations increased after the ECAP process. These results should be related to the modification of texture for easier slip on basal plane.
Wrought magnesium alloys show a low formability at room temperature, and a remarkable anisotropy of mechanical properties make it difficult to use them in a deformation process in industry. The microstructure and crystallographic texture of metals are developed during thermo-mechanical processes, and they are significant to the understanding of the mechanical properties of metals. This work studies the microstructure, texture development and tensile properties of the extruded AZ31 Mg alloy after rolling at 100 and $300^{\circ}C$. After 40% rolling at $100^{\circ}C$, many deformed twins were observed and a relatively weak texture developed. The basal poles were split and rotated towards the rolling direction about $20^{\circ}$. During 60% rolling at $300^{\circ}C$, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) took place and developed a strong <0001>II ND fiber texture, which influenced the poor formability at room temperature.
