  • In this paper, internal blast effect of reinforced concrete core structure were investigated using Ansys Autodyn, which is a specialized hydrocode for the analysis of explosion and impact. It is expected that internal blast case can give additional damage to the structure because it causes rebound of blast loads. Therefore, in this paper, the hazard of internal blast effect is demonstrated using UFC 3-340-02 criteria. In addition, analysis result of Autodyn, experimental result regarding rebound of blast load, and example of UFC 340-02 are compared to verify that Autodyn can analyze internal blast effect properly. Furthermore, progressive collapse mechanism of core structure which is one of the most important parts in high rise buildings is also analyzed using Autodyn. When internal blasts are loaded to core structure, the core structure is mostly damaged on its corner and front part of core wall from explosives. Therefore, if the damaged parts of core wall are demolished, progressive collapse of the core structure can be initiated.

  • Gas explosion accidents could cause a catastrophe. we need specialized and systematic accident investigation techniques to shed light on the cause and prevent similar accidents. In this study, we had performed LNG explosion simulation using AUTODYN which is the commercial explosion program and predicted the damage characteristics of the structures by LNG explosive power. In the first step, we could get LNG's physical and chemical explosion properties by calculation using TNT equivalency method. And then, by applying TNT equivalency value about the explosion limit concentration of LNG on the 2D-AUTODYN simulation, we could get the explosion pressure wave profiles (explosion pressure, explosion velocity, etc.). In the last step, we performed LNG explosion simulation by applying to the explosion pressure wave profiles as the input data on the 3D-AUTODYN simulation. As a result, we had performed analyzing of the explosion characteristics of LNG in accordance with concentration through the 3D-AUTODYN simulation in terms of the explosion pressure behavior and structure's destruction and damage behavior.

  • Coupling effects of the stemming materials for single borehole were studied by AUTODYN analysis and compared to understand the role of different stemming materials on transmitting the pressure from blasthole to the surrounding rocks. Five different material properties, air, sand, water, 10% and 20% gelatin were selected. Authors assumed that high pressure detected in borehole means better fragmentation. Simulations show that these coupling materials lead to different level of pressure in the blasting hole and 20% gelatin turns out to be highest among them. Results show that gelatin can be used as better coupling material than sand or water.

The analyses showed that the generated stresses of the structures were lower than the compressive strengths in cases 1(two lane) and 2(four lane), while the generated stress in case 3(six lane) was 8.68e3 kPa, which exceeded the compressive strength of 5.89e3 kPa.

  • To make a model of a Impact/Blast resistant composite material and perform the analysis, material properties of the composite material are required. In order to obtain such a property value, it is necessary to input the result obtained by performing a lot of material tests by the calculation formula of the situation, and there is a lot of difficulty in the case of a special purpose material which is not a general material. In this study, modeling and structural analysis of composite fiber panels for protection and explosion - proofing were performed in ACP(ANSYS Composite PrePost) and AUTODYN by applying the application properties of composites provided in Ansys Workbench environment.

  • Advanced fiber fabrics have been utilized in not only anti-stabbing and bullet-proofing for body armor but also various industrial fields including vehicular armor and spacecraft structure. Furthermore, there have been a number of research to improve the ballistic performance of advanced fabrics introducing many computational approaches. In our research, an advanced fabric, Heracron manufactured in South Korea was modelled firstly using Autodyn, a commercial software specializing in impact and explosion phenomenon. The sensitivity of the input parameters was also confirmed by conducting simulations. To verify the numerical modelling, we measured and compared the simulation results with velocity decrements after impact involving one, three, and five layers of Heracron under 200-500 m/s impacts by an aluminum spherical projectile. The Heracron fabric was successfully modelled using Autodyn.

  • It is of great importance to determine the optimum cutter spacing in TBM. In order to determine the optimum cutter spacing, a series of cutting tests by linear cutting machine (LCM) are performed with changing cutter space. This study showed that a numerical method for estimating the optimum cutter spacing could be developed by AUTODYN-3D in order to overcome the limitation of LCM test. By using this method, the optimum cutter spacing of Hwangdeung granite was estimated.

  • The most widely used method for determining the blast effects of explosives is the Trauzl lead block test. This test is used to measure the explosive power (strength) of a substance by determining volume increase, which is produced by the detonation of a test explosive charged in the cavity of a lead block with defined quantity and size. In this paper, Trazul lead block test and AUTODYN numerical analysis were conducted to evaluate the coupling medium effect of blast hole. The effects of coupling materials can be expressed as the expansion of the cavity in a standard lead block through explosion of the explosives. The tests were conducted with emulsion explosives. The coupling mediums used as the filling material around a explosive charge were air, sand, water and gelatine. Results of test and numerical analysis showed that expansion of lead block were much more affected by water&gel than by sand and air. The water and gel showed similar results. As expected, the transmitted pressure and dynamic strain was higher in water and gelatine coupled blast hole than in air and sand.

  • Penetrator with enhanced lateral effect (PELE) is a novel projectile that does not require dynamite and a fuse. It comprises a high-density jacket that is closed at its rear end and filled with a low-density filling material. To study the explosion characteristics of PELE using AUTODYN-3D code, the calculation models of the projectile body and the bullet target were developed and the process of penetrating an aluminum-2024 alloy target using PELE was simulated. The scattering characteristics after PELE penetrated the aluminum-2024 alloy target were studied for different filling materials. The explicit finite element analysis of PELE fragmentation was implemented with the stochastic failure criterion in AUTODYN-3D code. As the filling expanded, the fragments gained velocity and dispersed laterally, increasing the damage area considerably. The number and shape of PELE fragments differed depending on the impact pressure of the filling that fragmented during the penetration and lateral dispersion processes.
