ATSC 3.0 is a next-generation terrestrial broadcasting standard that provides various functions and improved performance compared to the existing ATSC 1.0 High Definition standard. Based on the ATSC 3.0 broadcast system with IP-centric transport and coherence, it can provide personalized and personalized interactive services to TV viewers. However, the broadcasting system still has a structural limitation in that the service is deployed separately from broadcasters who are allocated a specific frequency and is expected to have different spectrum allocation for each market. To overcome this structural limitation and provide improved services compared with the current ATSC 3.0, preliminary studies were conducted to apply the core network concept of a communication network (particularly 5G) to ATSC 3.0 broadcasting. Finally, in february of this year, the ATSC TG3/S43 group for the development of the ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Core Network (BCN) standard was launched. This paper describes the background and current status of BCN standardization by ATSC TG3/S43, and future standardization prospects.
In this paper, we design transmitter and receiver structures for a $2{\times}2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) in ATSC 3.0 systems and analyze the performance of the $2{\times}2$ MIMO system. In the ATSC 3.0 MIMO systems, spatial diversity and multiplexing gains can be obtained using the spatial demultiplexer and precoder. In this paper, we present the structures of the transmitter and receiver for ATSC 3.0 MIMO systems. Also, we present performance results of the $2{\times}2$ MIMO system through computer simulations.
Despite the successful launch of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 broadcasting worldwide, broadcasters are facing obstacles in constructing void-less large-scale single-frequency networks (SFNs). The bottleneck is the absence of decent on-channel repeater (OCR) solutions necessary for SFNs. In the real world, OCRs suffer from the maleficent feedback interference (FI) problem, which overwhelms the desired input signal. Moreover, the undesired multipaths between studio-linked transmitters and the OCR deteriorate the forward signals' quality as well. These problems crucially restrict the feasibility of conventional OCR systems, arousing the strong need for cost-worthy advanced OCR solutions. This paper presents an ATSC 3.0-specific solution of advanced OCR that solves the FI problem and refines the input signal. To this end, the FI canceler and channel equalizer functionalities are carefully implemented into the OCR system. The presented OCR system is designed to be fully compliant with the ATSC 3.0 specifications and performs a fast and efficient signal processing by exploiting the specific frame structure. The real product of ATSC 3.0 OCR is fabricated as well, and its feasibility is verified via field and laboratory experiments. The implemented solution is installed at a commercial on-air site and shown to provide substantial coverage gain in practice.
Republic of Korea has established 'Transmission and Reception for Terrestrial UHDTV Broadcasting Service' standard based on ATSC 3.0, the next-generation broadcasting standard in North America and is now providing commercial services. Republic of Korea has been studying terrestrial UHDTV based disaster broadcasting service using the ATSC 3.0 AEA system's technology since 2018. ATSC 3.0 has established a standard for expanding disaster broadcasting services, which were used to be simple push-type text message broadcasting, by introducing bidirectional and rich-media transporting mechanisms. However, the disaster information is still focused on the general public, and disaster broadcasting service including detailed information for the vulnerable are still insufficient. In this paper, we proposed the optimized disaster broadcasting service for vulnerable populations based on ATSC 3.0 after defined the disaster vulnerable populations as the target of the service. And we defined the extension element of disaster broadcasting message for service provision. The proposed service can be an effective means to increase the possibility of disaster information reception and evacuation to vulnerable populations. In addition, it is expected to be used as a basic research for development of diverse and effective advanced services for vulnerable populations through linkage with existing disaster alerting and countermeasures studies.
In this letter, we propose low-complexity Hybrid-Partial-Gaussian-Approximation (HPGA) decoding methods for core-layer signal of Layered-Division-Multiplexing Multiple-Inputs-Multiple- Outputs ATSC 3.0 broadcasting systems. The proposed HPGA decoding methods have an advantage of being able to greatly reduce decoding complexity without significant performance degradation compared to a conventional PGA method, by selectively using existing GA and PGA methods according to a received injection-level at an each receive antenna.
In this paper, the technology verification of next generation broadcasting technology and service suitable for domestic broadcasting environment was carried out to build and activate domestic terrestrial UHD broadcasting. ATSC 3.0-based mobile HD broadcasting is currently conducting experiments with various parameters from broadcasting companies, research institutes and others. However, experiments on integrated transmissions, including audio services, have not been carried out. Through this experiment, we first performed the theory and experiment on the maximum number of ATSC 3.0 based UHD broadcasting service, maximum service number of HD broadcasting considering mobility, and maximum service number of audio broadcasting within one channel (6MHz). Second, parameters for integrated transmission of each service (UHD broadcasting, mobile HD and audio broadcasting) in one channel were derived. Finally, we studied technical possibilities through field tests that we receive while moving directly in the field.

This work proposes suitable network configurations for single frequency networks (SFNs) with ATSC 1.0 based on network coverage calculations and the laboratory multipath handling performance of commercial receivers. SFNs are widely used for delivering terrestrial digital television services because of their efficient use of the spectrum. In Mexico the analogue television transmissions switch-off occurred on 31 December 2016. Thus it is expected the adopted ATSC 1.0 system will be in force for the next several years despite the recent standardization of the ATSC 3.0 system. As ATSC 1.0 uses 8-VSB modulation the multipath handling capability of receivers is critical for the design of SFNs. The presented network planning results help develop technical normativity for implementing SFNs in Mexico and other countries that use ATSC 1.0. SFNs with transmitter separation up to 130 km are fully covered for outdoor reception mainly due to the directivity of the receiving antenna. Moreover for indoor reception at least 70% of an SFN coverage area can be achieved with a transmitter separation of up to 60 km depending on the radiated power and the transmitter antenna height.

The terrestrial ATSC 3.0 broadcasting system, which is capable of converging broadcast and communication services, uses IP based technology for data transmission between broadcasting equipment. In addition, data transmission between broadcasting equipment uses IP-based technology like existing wired communication network, which has advantageous in terms of equipment construction and maintenance In case IP based data transmission technology is used, however, it may inevitably cause an error that a packet is lost during transmission depending on the network environments. In order to cope with a broadcasting accident caused by such a transmission error or a malfunction of a broadcasting apparatus, a broadcasting system is generally configured as a duplication, which can transmit a normal packet when various types of error may occur. By this reason, correction method of error packets and intelligent switching technology are essential. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a design and implementation of intelligent IP switch for Ensuring Reliability of ATSC 3.0 Broadcast Streams. The proposed intelligent IP consists of IP Stream Analysis Module, ALP Stream Analysis Module, STL Stream Analysis Module and SMPTE 2022-1 based FEC Encoding/Decoding Module.

This paper provides performance evaluations of various channel estimation schemes for Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system under a fixed reception environment. ATSC 3.0 MIMO system can obtain high spectral efficiency and improved reception performance compared to conventional terrestrial broadcasting systems. The ATSC 3.0 MIMO defines Walsh-Hadamard and null pilot encoding algorithms and the amplitude and phase of MIMO pilots are different from those of single-input single-output pilots. At the receiver, linear and discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based interpolations can be used for the channel estimation. This paper provides the various combinations of the interpolation schemes for channel estimation in time and frequency dimensions, and then analyzes the performance of the various combinations through the computer simulation. The results of computer simulation show that the combination of the linear interpolation in the time dimension and then DFT-based interpolation in the frequency dimension can obtain the best performance among the considered combinations.
