  • In this paper, human action recognition using pyramid histograms of oriented gradients and collaborative multi-task learning is proposed. First, we accumulate global activities and construct motion history image (MHI) for both RGB and depth channels respectively to encode the dynamics of one action in different modalities, and then different action descriptors are extracted from depth and RGB MHI to represent global textual and structural characteristics of these actions. Specially, average value in hierarchical block, GIST and pyramid histograms of oriented gradients descriptors are employed to represent human motion. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, we evaluate them by KNN, SVM with linear and RBF kernels, SRC and CRC models on DHA dataset, the well-known dataset for human action recognition. Large scale experimental results show our descriptors are robust, stable and efficient, and outperform the state-of-the-art methods. In addition, we investigate the performance of our descriptors further by combining these descriptors on DHA dataset, and observe that the performances of combined descriptors are much better than just using only sole descriptor. With multimodal features, we also propose a collaborative multi-task learning method for model learning and inference based on transfer learning theory. The main contributions lie in four aspects: 1) the proposed encoding the scheme can filter the stationary part of human body and reduce noise interference; 2) different kind of features and models are assessed, and the neighbor gradients information and pyramid layers are very helpful for representing these actions; 3) The proposed model can fuse the features from different modalities regardless of the sensor types, the ranges of the value, and the dimensions of different features; 4) The latent common knowledge among different modalities can be discovered by transfer learning to boost the performance.

  • Damages of large embankment dams by recent strong earthquakes in the world highlight the importance of seismic security of dams. Some of recent dam construction projects for water storage and hydropower are located in highly seismic zone, hence the seismic performance evaluation is an important issue. While state-of-the-art numerical analysis technology is generally utilized in practice for seismic performance evaluation of large dams, physical modeling is also carried out where new construction technology is involved or numerical analysis technology cannot simulate the behavior appropriately. Geotechnical centrifuge modeling is widely adopted in earthquake engineering to simulate the seismic behavior of large earth structures, but sometimes it can't be applied for large embankment dams due to various limitations. This study proposes a dynamic centrifuge testing method for large embankment dams and evaluated its applicability. Scaling relations for a case which model scale and g-level are different could be derived considering the stress conditions and predominant period of the structure, which is equivalent to previously suggested scaling relations. The scaling principles and testing method could be verified by modified modeling of models using a model at different acceleration levels. Finally, its applicability was examined by centrifuge tests for an embankment dam in Korea.

  • The problem of earthquake induced torsion in buildings is quite old and although it has received a lot of attention in the past several decades, it is still open. This is evident not only from the variability of the pertinent provisions in various modern codes but also from conflicting results debated in the literature. Most of the conducted research on this problem has been based on very simplified, highly idealized models of eccentric one-story systems, with single or double eccentricity and with load bearing elements of the shear beam type, sized only for earthquake action. Initially, elastic models were used but were gradually replaced by inelastic models, since building response under design level earthquakes is expected to be inelastic. Code provisions till today have been based mostly on results from one-story inelastic models or on results from elastic multistory idealizations. In the past decade, however, more accurate multi story inelastic building response has been studied using the well-known and far more accurate plastic hinge model for flexural members. On the basis of such research some interesting conclusions have been drawn, revising older views about the inelastic response of buildings based on one-story simplified model results. The present paper traces these developments and presents new findings that can explain long lasting controversies in this area and at the same time may raise questions about the adequacy of code provisions based on results from questionable models. To organize this review better it was necessary to group the various publications into a number of subtopics and within each subtopic to separate them into smaller groups according to the basic assumptions and/or limitations used. Capacity assessment of irregular buildings and new technologies to control torsional motion have also been included.

  • Information on newspaper articles were categorized into different topics, and each categories within different topics were developed into a faceted taxonomies model which was combined with fundamental facets. After suggesting the plan to construct such a model, the research of actual faceted taxonomies were conducted. Faceted taxonomies divide information on news articles into different topics(such as politics, economies and others) and combine fundamental facets with categories(for example, politics can be sub-classified into general politics, administration, legal system, and others) and sub-categories. Each sub-categories can be further subdivided. In taxanomies, categories can have hierarchical relationships. Categories-Facets, for example, can be utilized to combine "arts" with "people", "action", "event", "time", "place" and others. And Sub-category of the classification of "arts" such as "art," "music," "dance" form hierarchical relationships with "arts" and, in turn, can be used for browsing and further inferences. Furthermore, combining category and facets results in hierarchical structure in order of fundamental facets. As for the pilot vocabulary construction, faceted taxonomies of 145 words from news paper articles on the topic of "arts" were constructed using all construction elements covered in this study.

  • The seasonal predictability of the intensity of the Northeast Asian summer monsoon is low while that of the western North subtropical high variability is, when state-of-the-art general circulation models are used, relatively high. The western North Pacific subtropical high dominates the climate anomalies in the western North Pacific-East Asian region. This study discusses the predictability of the western North Pacific subtropical High variability in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Climate Forecast System (NCEP CFS). The interannual variability of the Northeast Asian summer monsoon is highly correlated with one of the western North Pacific subtropical Highs. Based on this relationship, we suggest a seasonal prediction model using NCEP CFS and canonical correlation analysis for Northeast Asian summer precipitation anomalies and assess the predictability of the prediction model. This methodology provides significant skill in the seasonal prediction of the Northeast Asian summer rainfall anomalies.

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the expression of costume through the review of cinema costumes and to provide the model of cooperation between fashion and movie industry by analysis of collaboration with fashion brands in the movie . The subjects are the 1974 film directed by Jack Clayton and the 2013 version by Baz Luhrmann. Cinema Fashion was studied by analyzing the costumes of the two main characters, Gatsby and Daisy, in each scene. Gatsby's costume appeared as a model of traditional American classic suit, sensitive G-G look that symbolizes social success and traditional casual style that reflects upper-class life style. Daisy's costume expressed pastel toned luxury flapper look, oriental art deco style, and prestigious jewelry representing high class. The collaborations with fashion brands were carried out with Ralph Lauren and Cartier in 1974 film, and Brooks Brothers, Prada, and Tiffany in 2013. The value of prestige brands that matched the images of the movie was utilized, but marketing strategies for the promotion of fashion goods were not enough in 1974 version. On the other hand, in 2013 film, the effects of collaboration of the movie and fashion brands were forecasted sufficiently and marketing campaigns for promotion were performed in a various ways. The characteristics of collaborations were as follows: (1) the usage of prestige brands value, (2) collections planning and promotion using the stories of a movie, (3) the usage of multidirectional digital media, and (4) multi-dimensional promotion using entertainment factors. In collaborations with the movie, fashion brands could make cooperative relationship to produce the positive effects for promotion and prestige image strategies and draw attention of the people to the movie and fashion.

  • When it comes to current growth trend for the printing process in Asia printing market, offset printing, gravure printing and screen printing are reduced respectively -4%, -19%, -55%. In judging from the fact, the change in the printing production system from mass production on small amount to small production on mass amount is the biggest issue. For this reason, digital printing shows the significant growth. According to the increase of the growth 78% for electro photography way and 67% for ink-jet, it's not enough to catch up with digital printing which is increasing as time goes by to equip with hardware like as digital press. There's been necessary to install the BOD(Book on Demand) system which is the advanced and regular publication edit solution based on web-to-print model in the prepress, and it has made the BOD system be considered in relation to maximization of efficiency and production. Therefore, this research tries to step forward from the POD concept, which is refired to "Print along with the ordered quantities, the ordered appropriate time and the demanded place", so that it could expand the range of the printing/publishing environment using the BOD system, the order-made publication based on automatically operating template. And it tried to make the relation to digital web press on ink-jet method which is adequate to "mass production on small amount" with such advanced concept. This research also aims to use actively BOD solution model to promote the productivity of labor, and then to produce the printings across all related industries, which means to manufacture maximally the products on the shortest time at minimum place through PC equipments.

  • Automatic word spacing is a process of deciding correct boundaries between words in a sentence including spacing errors. It is very important to increase the readability and to communicate the accurate meaning of text to the reader. The previous statistical approaches for automatic word spacing do not consider the previous spacing state, and thus can not help estimating inaccurate probabilities. In this paper, we propose two statistical word spacing models which can solve the problem of the previous statistical approaches. The proposed models are based on the observation that the automatic word spacing is regarded as a classification problem such as the POS tagging. The models can consider broader context and estimate more accurate probabilities by generalizing hidden Markov models. We have experimented the proposed models under a wide range of experimental conditions in order to compare them with the current state of the art, and also provided detailed error analysis of our models. The experimental results show that the proposed models have a syllable-unit accuracy of 98.33% and Eojeol-unit precision of 93.06% by the evaluation method considering compound nouns.
