  • Most recent infrared (IR) sensors have a focal-plane array (FPA) structure. Spatial non-uniformity of a FPA structure, however, introduces unwanted fixed pattern noise (FPN) to images. This non-uniformity correction (NUC) of a FPA can be categorized into target-based and scene-based approaches. In a target-based approach, FPN can be separated by using a uniform target such as a black body. Since the detector response randomly drifts along the time axis, however, several scene-based algorithms on the basis of a video sequence have been proposed. Among those algorithms, the state-of-the-art one based on Kalman filter uses one-directional warping for motion compensation and only compensates for offset non-uniformity of IR camera detectors. The system model using one-directional warping cannot correct the boundary region where a new scene is being introduced in the next video frame. Furthermore, offset-only correction approaches may not completely remove the FPN in images if it is considerably affected by gain non-uniformity. Therefore, for FPN reduction in IR videos, we propose a joint correction algorithm of gain and offset based on bi-directional warping. Experiment results using simulated and real IR videos show that the proposed scheme can provide better performance compared with the state-of-the art in FPN reduction.

  • Today, with the spread of smartphones and the development of social networking services, structured and unstructured big data have stored exponentially. If we analyze them well, we will get useful information to be able to predict data for the future. Large amounts of data need to be collected first in order to analyze big data. The web is repository where these data are most stored. However, because the data size is large, there are also many data that have information that is not needed as much as there are data that have useful information. This has made it important to collect data efficiently, where data with unnecessary information is filtered and only collected data with useful information. Web crawlers cannot download all pages due to some constraints such as network bandwidth, operational time, and data storage. This is why we should avoid visiting many pages that are not relevant to what we want and download only important pages as soon as possible. This paper seeks to help resolve the above issues. First, We introduce basic web-crawling algorithms. For each algorithm, the time-complexity and pros and cons are described, and compared and analyzed. Next, we introduce the state-of-the-art web crawling algorithms that have improved the shortcomings of the basic web crawling algorithms. In addition, recent research trends show that the web crawling algorithms with special purposes such as collecting sentiment words are actively studied. We will one of the introduce Sentiment-aware web crawling techniques that is a proactive web crawling technique as a study of web crawling algorithms with special purpose. The result showed that the larger the data are, the higher the performance is and the more space is saved.

  • An image retrieval system based on image content is a key issue for building and managing large multimedia database, such as art galleries and museums, trademarks and copyrights, and picture archiving and communication system. Therefore, the interest on the subject of content-based image retrieval has been greatly increased for the last few years. This paper proposes a feature-based image retrieval technique which uses a compound feature vector representing both of color and shape of an image. Color information for the feature vector is obtained using the algebraic moment of each pixel of an image based on the property of regional color distribution. Shape information for the feature vector is obtained using the Improved Moment Invariant(IMI) which reduces the quantity of computation and increases retrieval efficiency. In the preprocessing phase for extracting shape feature, we transform a color image into a gray image. Since we make use of the modified DCT algorithm, it is implemented easily and can extract contour in real time. As an experiment, we have compared our method with previous methods using a database consisting of 150 automobile images, and the results of the experiment have shown that our method has the better performance on retrieval effectiveness.

  • For uplink multi-user massive MIMO systems, conventional minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear detection method achieves near-optimal performance when the number of antennas at base station is much larger than that of the single-antenna users. However, MMSE detection involves complicated matrix inversion, thus making it cumbersome to be implemented cost-effectively and rapidly. In this paper, we first summarize in detail the state-of-the-art simplified MMSE detection algorithms that circumvent the complicated matrix inversion and hence reduce the computation complexity from ${\mathcal{O}}(K^3)$ to ${\mathcal{O}}(K^2)$ or ${\mathcal{O}}(NK)$ with some certain performance sacrifice. Meanwhile, we divide the simplified algorithms into two categories, namely the matrix inversion approximation and the classical iterative linear equation solving methods, and make comparisons between them in terms of detection performance and computation complexity. In order to further optimize the detection performance of the existing detection algorithms, we propose more proper solutions to set the initial values and relaxation parameters, and present a new way of reconstructing the exact effective noise variance to accelerate the convergence speed. Analysis and simulation results verify that with the help of proper initial values and parameters, the simplified matrix inversion based detection algorithms can achieve detection performance quite close to that of the ideal matrix inversion based MMSE algorithm with only a small number of series expansions or iterations.

  • The recent advancements in sensing technologies allow us to record measurements from target structures at multiple locations and with relatively high spatial resolution. Such measurements can be used to develop data-driven methodologies for condition assessment, control, and health monitoring of target structures. One of the state-of-the-art technologies, Fiber Optic Strain Sensors (FOSS), is developed at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, and is based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. These strain sensors are accurate, lightweight, and can provide almost continuous strain-field measurements along the length of the fiber. The strain measurements can then be used for real-time shape-sensing and operational load-estimation of complex structural systems. While several works have demonstrated the successful implementation of FOSS on large-scale real-life aerospace structures (i.e., airplane wings), there is paucity of studies in the literature that have investigated the potential of extending the application of FOSS into civil structures (e.g., tall buildings, bridges, etc.). This work assesses the feasibility of using FOSS to predict operational loads (e.g., wind loads) on chain-like structures. A thorough investigation is performed using analytical, computational, and experimental models of a 4-story steel building test specimen, developed at the University of Southern California. This study provides guidelines on the implementation of the FOSS technology on building-like structures, addresses the associated technical challenges, and suggests potential modifications to a load-estimation algorithm, to achieve a robust methodology for predicting operational loads using strain-field measurements.

  • In this paper, we primarily address the difficulty of automatic generation of a plausible depth map from a single image in an unstructured environment. The aim is to extrapolate a depth map with a more correct, rich, and distinct depth order, which is both quantitatively accurate as well as visually pleasing. Our technique, which is fundamentally based on a preexisting DepthTransfer algorithm, transfers depth information at the level of superpixels. This occurs within a framework that replaces a pixel basis with one of instance-based learning. A vital superpixels feature enhancing matching precision is posterior incorporation of predictive semantic labels into the depth extraction procedure. Finally, a modified Cross Bilateral Filter is leveraged to augment the final depth field. For training and evaluation, experiments were conducted using the Make3D Range Image Dataset and vividly demonstrate that this depth estimation method outperforms state-of-the-art methods for the correlation coefficient metric, mean log10 error and root mean squared error, and achieves comparable performance for the average relative error metric in both efficacy and computational efficiency. This approach can be utilized to automatically convert 2D images into stereo for 3D visualization, producing anaglyph images that are visually superior in realism and simultaneously more immersive.

  • Developing u-Public facilities for application u-City is to combine both the state-of-the art of the construction and ubiquitous computing and must be flexibly comprised of the facilities for the basic service of the building such as air conditioning, heating, lighting and electric equipments to materialize a new format of spatial planning and the public facilities inside or outside. Accordingly, in this paper we suggested the time pattern system for predicting the most basic power system loads for the basic service. To application the tim e pattern we applied SOM algorithm and k-means method and then clustered the data each weekday and each time respectively. The performance evaluation results of suggestion system showed that the forecasting system better the ARIMA model than the exponential smoothing method. It has been assumed that the plan for power supply depending on demand and system operation could be performed efficiently by means of using such power load forecasting.

  • The field of Image Quality Measure (IQM) is growing rapidly in recent years. In particular, there was a significant progress in No-Reference (NR) IQM methods. In this paper, a general-purpose NR IQM algorithm is proposed based on the statistical characteristics of natural images in shearlet domain. The method utilizes a set of distortion-sensitive features extracted from statistical properties of shearlet coefficients. A complex version of the shearlet transform is employed to take advantage of phase and amplitude features in quality estimation. Furthermore, since shearlet transform can analyze the images at multiple scales, the effect of distortion on across-scale dependencies of shearlet coefficients is explored for feature extraction. For quality prediction, the features are used to train image classification and quality prediction models using a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The experimental results show that the proposed NR IQM is highly correlated with human subjective assessment and outperforms several Full-Reference (FR) and state-of-art NR IQMs.

  • In this paper, we propose the react-time car license plate recognition algorithm using intensity variation and geometric pattern vector. Generally, difference of car license plate region between character and background is more noticeable than other regions. And also, car license plate region usually shows high density values as well as constant intensity variations. Based on these characteristics, we first extract car license plate region using intensity variations. Secondly, lightness compensation process is performed on the considerably dark and brightness input images to acquire constant extraction efficiency. In the proposed recognition step, we first pre-process noise reduction and thinning steps. And also, we use geometric pattern vector to extract features which independent on the size, translation, and rotation of input values. In the experimental results, the proposed method shows better computation times than conventional circular pattern vector and better extraction results regardless of irregular environment lighting conditions as well as noise, size, and location of plate.
