  • Axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth enhancement is achieved for a circularly polarized (CP) cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) using a wideband hybrid coupler (WHC) combined with dual probe feed. The presented WHC, comprised of a Wilkinson power divider and a wideband $90^{\circ}$ shifter, delivers good characteristics in terms of 3 dB power splitting and consistent $90^{\circ}$ (${\pm}5^{\circ}$) phase shifting over a wide bandwidth. In turn, the proposed CP DRA, for the employment of the WHC, in place of conventional designs, provides a significant enhancement on AR bandwidth and impedance matching. The antenna prototype with the WHC exhibits a 3 dB AR bandwidth of 48.66%, an impedance bandwidth of 52.5% for voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ${\leq}2$, and a bandwidth of 44.66% for a gain of no less than 3 dBi. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed WHC is suitable for broadband CP DRA design.

  • Modern communication systems employ wideband antennas with circular polarization (CP) radiation. In this work, asymmetric modified bow-tie (ABT) and symmetric modified bow-tie (SBT) slotted circularly polarized single-point probe-fed circular patch antennas with dimensions of $40mm{\times}40mm$ for wideband applications are proposed. A 10 dB RL bandwidth of 350 MHz with CP, 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 100 MHz, peak gain of 4.9 dBic, and 10 dB RL bandwidth of 530 MHz with CP, 3 dB AR bandwidth of 140 MHz, peak gain of 5 dBic are obtained for ABT and SBT slotted circular patch antennas, respectively. The proposed SBT slotted patch is scaled up and down to $50mm{\times}50mm$ and $30mm{\times}30mm$, respectively. The proposed scaled-up version offers 10 dB RL and 3 dB AR bandwidths of 340 MHz and 80 MHz, with a peak gain of 5 dBic. The scaled-down version offers 10 dB RL and 3 dB AR bandwidths of 710 MHz and 180 MHz, with a peak gain of 5.25 dBic. These prototypes are suitable to work in IEEE 802.11a WLAN, ISM, and IEEE 802.11ac applications. The measured and simulated results are then discussed and compared.

  • A single-feed composite cavity-backed four-arm curl antenna is presented for use in global positioning systems (GPS). Its primary radiating element is fed by a vacant-quarter printed ring, which helps the antenna directly match to a $50-{\Omega}$ coaxial line and produce a good circular polarization (CP). The cavity-backed reflector is employed to improve the CP radiation characteristics in terms of 3-dB axial ratio (AR) beamwidth and minimum AR value. The optimized design with an overall size of $90{\times}90{\times}25mm^3$ ($0.4725{\lambda}_o{\times}0.4725{\lambda}_o{\times}0.13{\lambda}_o$ at 1,575 MHz) results in a ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}<-10dB$ bandwidth of 8.66% (1,514-1,651 MHz) and a 3-dB AR bandwidth of 2.23% (1,555-1,590 MHz). The antenna radiates a widebeam right-hand circular polarization and operates with a measured radiation efficiency greater than 90% within its impedance matching bandwidth.

  • A wideband circularly polarized pinwheel-shaped planar monopole antenna fed by a wideband feeding network is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna is formed by four wideband planar monopole antenna elements with aquadruple feeding network in order to improve the performance of circular polarization. Additionally, the antenna, which is introduced here, has a high gain in the z axis direction because of its folded antenna structure. The attractive characteristics of the proposed antenna are the wide impedance bandwidth of 87.3 % (1 GHz to 2.55 GHz), the 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 92.3 % (1.05 GHz to 2.85 GHz), and the maximum gain within the 3 dB AR bandwidth is about 8.24 dBic.

  • In this paper, the cause of linear prediction error is analysed and the theoretical basis for nomalizing the format bandwidth to 0is given and its validity is verified. The formant and bandwidth in relation to the position of the poles of AR filter are measured for an alaysis of the relation between the pole position and the formant bandwidth. By changing the glottis reflection coefficient to 1. the pole position and the formant bandwidth. By changing the glottis reflection coefficient to 1. the effect of the glottis is eliminated and as the result a new linear preiction coefficients are obtained by normalizing the formant bandwidth of the signal to 0. since these coefficients are symmetrical, the standard deviation is larger than the coefficients with fixed glottis reflection coefficient. The bit rate for speech coding can be reduced by a factor of 2 without any loss of information. Through computer simulation, recognition rate of 96.7% is botained by using the proposed algorithm in recognizing 5 Korean vowels in noisy environment.

  • A wideband circularly polarized (CP) antenna with a single feed is proposed for use in global navigation satellite systems. Its primary radiation elements are composed of two orthogonal bowtie dipoles, which are equipped with double-printed vacant-quarter rings to allow direct matching of the antenna to a single $50-{\Omega}$ coaxial line and to produce CP radiation. The crossed bowtie dipole is appropriately incorporated with a planar metallic reflector to produce the desired unidirectional radiation pattern as well as to achieve a wideband characteristic in terms of impedance matching and axial ratio (AR) bandwidths. The designed antenna was fabricated and measured. The prototype antenna with an overall 1.2-GHz frequency size of $0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.48{\lambda}_o{\times}0.25{\lambda}_o$ produced a measured ${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}$<-10 dB bandwidth of 1.05-1.79 GHz and a measured 3-dB AR bandwidth of 1.12-1.64 GHz. It also showed right-hand CP radiation with a small gain variation (${\pm}0.3dB$) and high radiation efficiency (>93%) over the operational bandwidth.

  • Mirror coating is applied to laser facets to improve properties of edge emitting laser diodes. In this experiment, InGaAsP/GaAs high power laser diodes were studied with respect to different degrees of anti-reflective coating. Sputterred $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ was used as the coating material and the HR coating was kept constant at 90%. Threshold current density, differential quantum efficiency, emission wavelength and the operating current at 500mW were measured for a range of AR coating and compared with theoretically calculated values; that showed good agreements. Precise wavelength control is important for laser diodes for solid state pumping because of small absorption bandwidth. In addition, since these lasers operate under CW condition, a lowest possible operating current for a given power is desired in order to minimize the heat produced. From the results of this experiment, we were able to obtain a optimum range of AR coatings for minimum operating current. The wavelength can be varied up to 4nm within this range.

  • In this paper, a wideband, circularly polarized patch antenna is proposed that leverages the unidirectional resonant modes of a circular patch mounted on top of a grounded dielectric-ferrite substrate. The proposed antenna is fed via the proximity coupling method and several parasitically coupled patches are placed on a dielectric superstrate to enhance the impedance bandwidth of the antenna. The resonant modes of the structure rotate only in the clockwise or counter clockwise directions. In the frequency range where the effective permeability of the ferrite layer is negative, the resonance frequencies of these modes differ significantly, which produces a large axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. For the proposed antenna, the numerical results show the 10 dB impedance bandwidth to be around 44% and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth to be higher than 64%.

  • This paper proposes a new method on the EMG AR(autoregressive) modeling in pattern recognition for various head motions. The proper electrode placement in applying AR or cepstral coefficients for EMG signature discrimination is investigated. EMG signals are measured for different 10 motions with two electrode arrangements simultaneously. Electrode pairs are located separately on dominant muscles(S-type arrangement), because the bandwidth of signals obtained from S-type placement is wider than that from C-type(closely in the region between muscles). From the result of EMG pattern recognition test, the proposed mIAR(modified integrated mean autoregressive model) technique improves the recognitions rate around 17-21% compared with other the AR and cepstral methods.

  • The most important issue in providing multimedia traffic on a mobile computing environments is to guarantee the mobile host(client) with consistent QoS(Quality of Service). However, the QoS negotiated between the client and network in one cell may not be honored due to client mobility, causing hand-offs between cells. In this paper, a call admission control mechanism is proposed to provide consistent QoS guarantees for multimedia traffics in a mobile computing environment. Each cell can reserve fractional bandwidths for hand-off calls to its adjacent cells. It is important to determine the right amount of reserved bandwidth for hand-off calls because the blocking probability of new calls may increase if the amount of reserved bandwidth is more than necessary. An adaptive bandwidth reservation based on an MPP(Mobility Pattern Profile) and a 2-tier cell structure has been proposed to determine the amount of bandwidth to be reserved in the cell and to control dynamically its amount based on its network condition. We also propose a call admission control based on this bandwidth reservation and "next-cell prediction" scheme using an MPP. In order to evaluate the performance of our call admission control mechanism, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of our call admission control mechanism, we measure the metrics such as the blocking probability of new calls, dropping probability of hand-off calls, and bandwidth utilization. The simulation results show that the performance of our mechanism is superior to that of the existing mechanisms such as NR-CAT1, FR-CAT1, and AR-CAT1.
