API steel is used for line-pipe to transport the oil and natural gas. As the recent trends in the development of API steel are towards the use of larger diameter and thicker plate, many researches have been studied to achieve higher strength, higher toughness and lower yield ratio in API steel. However, the strength of API steel after pipe forming is changed depend on the competition of the Bauschinger effect and work hardening. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence on the Bauschinger effect for API steel by addition of V and Cu which are formed the precipitations for higher strength in API steel. The results are that the addition of V considered as a ferrite stabilizer and Cu considered as a austenite stabilizer decreases and increases the Bauschinger effect for API steel respectively.
API steel is used for line-pipe to transport the oil and natural gas. As the recent trends in the development of API steel are towards the use of larger diameter and thicker plate, many researches have been studied to achieve higher strength, higher toughness and lower yield ratio in API steel. However, the strength of API steel after pipe forming is changed depending on the competition of the Bauschinger effect and work hardening which are affected by the strain history during pipe forming process. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of microstructure on the Bauschinger effect for API steel. To change the microstructure of API steel we have changed the hot rolling condition and the amounts of V and Cu addition. The compression-tensile test and the microstructure observation by OM and TEM were conducted to investigate the yield strength drop and the correlation between the Bauschinger effect and microstructure of API steel. The experimental results show that the increase of polygonal ferrites volume fraction increases the Baushcinger effect due to the back stress which comes from the increase of mobile dislocation density at polygonal ferrite interior during the compressive deformation. The hot rolling condition was more effective on the Bauschinger effect in API steel than the small amount of V and Cu addition.
This paper presents a stress-modified fracture strain for API X65 steel used for gas pipeline, as a function of stress triaxiality. To determine the stress-modified fracture strain, tension test of bars with four different notch radii, made of API X65 steel, is firstly performed, from which true fracture strains are determined as a function of notch radius. Then detailed elastic-plastic, large strain finite element (FE) analyses are performed to estimate variations of stress triaxiality in the notched bars with load. Combining experimental with FE results provides the true fracture strain as a function of stress triaxiality, which is regarded as a criterion of ductile fracture. Application of the developed stress-modified fracture strain to failure prediction of gas pipes made of API X65 steel with various types of defects is discussed.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spherodizing heat treatment holding time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel, which is mainly used as a structural material for line pipe steel for natural gas pipes. The accelerated cooling-treated API X70 steel was spherodizing treated at 700℃ for 12~48 h. The microstructure was observed using an OM and a FEG-SEM, and mechanical properties were obtained by tensile test. The microstructure of the API X70 steel was banded in the hot rolling direction, and the polygonal ferrite(PF) adjacent to pearlite(P) has mainly a fine size, and coarse PF and fine acicular ferrite were formed in the middle of P and P. As the spherodizing treatment time increased, the number of carbide particles decreased and its distribution interval increased, and the ferrite grain size was coarsened. The tensile strength decreased and the ductility increased with spherodizing treatment time, and the yield point elongation was disappeared in a stress-strain curve after the spherodizing treatment.
The evaluation of HAZ toughness and cold crack susceptibility of 90mm thickness API 2W Grade 50 steel has been made in accordance with API RP 2Z as preproduction qualification test to be certified as il steel supplier from Shell International E & P. It was shown that the steel has superior HAZ toughness; CTOD value for CGHAZ more than 1.5mm at -10$^{\circ}C$, CVN absorbed energy more than 150J at -60$^{\circ}C$. Additionally, no generation of cold cracks was observed at 0.7kJ/mm even without preheating condition. These excellent results are due to the extremely low hardenability in HAZ of the steel.
A local failure criterion for the API X65 steel is applied to predict ductile failure of full-scale API X65 pipes with simulated corrosion and gouge defects under internal pressure. The local failure criterion is the stress-modified fracture strain for the API X65 steel as a function of the stress triaxiality (defined by the ratio of the hydrostatic stress to the effective stress). Based on detailed FE analyses with the proposed local failure criteria, burst pressures of defective pipes are estimated and compared with experimental data. The predicted burst pressures are in good agreement with experimental data. Noting that an assessment equation against the gouge defect is not yet available, parametric study is performed, from which a simple equation is proposed to predict burst pressure fur API X65 pipes with gouge defects.
Likelihood of failure (LOF) for the external corrosion of stainless steel, which affect to a risk of facilities, was analyzed quantitatively through the risk based inspection using API-581 BRD. We found that the technical module subfactor (TMSF) decreased as the inspection number increased and it increased as the inspection effectiveness and the used year increased, and that the TMSF showed high value for the case of the marine/cooling tower drift area as a corrosion driver, In this condition, the LOF for the external corrosion of stainless steel had lower than that for the carbon and low alloy steels
The effect of strain aging on the tensile properties of API X70 linepipe steel was investigated in this study. The API X70 linepipe steel was fabricated by controlled rolling and accelerated cooling processes, and the microstructure was analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopes and electron backscatter diffraction. Strain aging tests consisting of 1 % pre-strain and thermal aging at $200^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$ were conducted to simulate U-forming, O-forming, Expansion(UOE) pipe forming and anti-corrosion coating processes. The API X70 linepipe steel was composed of polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, granular bainite, and bainitic ferrite whose volume fraction was dependent on the chemical composition and process conditions. As the thermal aging temperature increased, the steel specimens showed more clearly discontinuous type yielding behavior in the tensile stress-strain curve due to the formation of a Cottrell atmosphere. After pre-strain and thermal aging, the yield and tensile strengths increased and the yield-to-tensile strength ratio decreased because yielding and aging behaviors significantly affected work hardening. On the other hand, uniform and total elongations decreased after pre-strain and thermal aging since dislocation gliding was restricted by increased dislocation density after a 1 % pre-strain.
Acoustic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were applied to non-destructively evaluate the hydrogen-induced cracking of API X-80 steels and to find the initiation time of the crack. The API X-80 steel had the average grain size of about $4-10{\mu}m$. The hardness was reduced from 240 to 202 [Hv] after exposing in HIC environment for 2-days. Friction coefficient and wear loss were 0.745 and 0.392 mm, respectively. Empirical equation of corrosion potential and corrosion rate of the steel with HIC time in $5%NaCl-0.5%CH_3COOH$ at $25^{\circ}C$ were $Eh\;(up)=0.06^*t[day]+0.2951$, $Eh(down)=0.376^*t[day]+0.5938$, respectively. HIC grew with micro-size after 1-day exposure. The HIC tended to propagate on the surface with Al, Si, Ti, and Mn.
