  • Purpose: This study was to identify factors explaining health empowerment of older adults with high-risk of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from 148 older adults residing in two areas who have one or more of the following diseases; hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and atherosclerosis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: Health empowerment had a positive correlation with health literacy and social support. Perceived health status and social activity participation showed significant contribution in explaining health empowerment. Conclusion: This study showed that enhancing perceived health status and social activity participation are vital in an effort to improve health empowerment of the population. Main findings of this study can contribute to developing health empowerment interventions to improve health behavior practices of the older adults.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effect of depression, life stress and resilience on quality of life among middle-aged women. Methods: A descriptive correlation study design was used with a convenience sample consisting of 201 middle-aged women recruited from an urban area. SPSS 21.0 was used for a descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations and multiple-regression analysis. Results: Quality of life had a significant positive correlation with resilience(r=.53, p<.001) and negative correlation with life stress(r=-.27, p<.001). The significant factors for quality of life were resilience (B=.425, p<.001) marital-status (B=.227, p=.001) and health status (B=-216, p=.001). These factors explained 36.8% of the variance in quality of life. Conclusions: In conclusion, to promote quality of life middle-aged women, there is a need to develop an intervention program to improve resilience.

  • Moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) is an important item for many applications of polymer breathable thin film. To determine the optimum values of the process parameters, it is essential to find their influence on The significance of six important process parameters namely, extruder cylinder temperature, extruder speed, extruder dies temperature, cooling roll temperature, stretching ratio, stretching roll temperature on breathable film strength of polymer extrusion was determined. Moreover, this paper presents the application of Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) for maximization of the breathable film MVTR influenced by extrusion parameters. The optimum parameter combination of extrusion process was obtained by using the analysis of signal-to-noise ratio. The conclusion revealed that extruder speed and stretching ratio were the most influential factor on the film strength, respectively. The best results of film MVTR were obtained at higher extruder speed and stretching ratio.

  • The synthesis of a novel superabsorbent hydrogel with natural hybrid backbone via graft copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) onto kappa-carrageenan (kC, as a polysaccharide) and gelatin (as a protein) under classic thermal conditions is described. The Taguchi method as a strong experimental design tool was used for synthesis optimization. A series of hydrogels were synthesized by proposed conditions of Qualitek-4 Software. Considering the results of 9 trials according to analysis of variance (ANOVA), optimum conditions were proposed. The swelling behavior of optimum hydrogel was measured in various solutions with pH values ranging from 1 to 13. In addition, swelling kinetics, swelling in various organic solvents, various salt solutions and On–Off switching behavior were investigated. The hydrogel formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetrical analysis (TGA). Surface morphology of the synthesized hydrogels was assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM).

  • The mortality rate of car-pedestrian accidents is quite high, compared to the frequency of accidents. Researches on pedestrian protection are being actively performed worldwide. The A-pillar and lower part of the wind shield cause the most serious damage to the pedestrians. Typical devises to protect the pedestrians are the hood lift system and pedestrian airbag. The design of such devices for an sport utility vehicle is performed based on a design process using design of experiments (DOE). The design results are obtained by an orthogonal array (OA), analysis of mean (ANOM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A metamodel is also used in the design process.

  • Machine operator and quality are affected by chip during cutting process to product machine parts. This paper presents a study of the influence of cutting conditions on the surface roughness obtained by turning using Taguchi method for safety of turning operator. In the machining of titanium alloy, high cutting temperature and strong chemical affinity between the tool and the work material are generated because of its low thermal conductivity and chemical reactivity. Therefore titanium alloys are known as difficult-to materials. An orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise ratio, the analysis of variance are employed to investigate the cutting characteristics of implant material bars using tungsten carbide cutting tools of throwaway type. Also Experimental results by orthogonal array are compared with optimal condition to evaluate advanced reliability. Required simulations and experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.

  • We provide a fudamental set of information on technologies in the area of mechanical engineering to draw action plans for intermationalization of the National R&D activites. First, we design and use a modified Delphi method to evaluate levels of our technological capabilities and developed countries' as well. We investigate technology acquistion methodolgies, technology characteristcs and various aspects of international cooperation in terms of technology. Secondly, we analyze final responses of participants (i.e,. the third round results of Delphi method) tosee the correlation between various factors in developing mechanical engineering technologies through international cooperation. The technology classification used in this research is developed by STEPI (Science and Technology Policy Institute).

  • The variations of wood density and mechanical properties of Juniperus polycarpos trees were studied in a natural forest in Iran. Sample disks were taken from each tree to examine wood density and mechanical properties (MOE and MOR) from pith to bark at breast height, 50%, and 75% of total tree height. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that radial position and height significantly affected all wood properties. The wood density, MOE and MOR were decreased along horizontal position from the pith to the bark and vertical direction from base upwards. Regression analysis showed that modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) had a positive correlation with wood density.

  • Purpose: This article provides the efficiency test results of conducting depot maintenance. Method: ANOVA (analysis of variance) and ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) tests are conducted using data obtained from Defense Logistics Integrated Information System (DELIIS). Results: The result shows that although the effect of the depot maintenance is significant, some parts do not follow the overall effect of the depot maintenance. In order to solve the problem we provide some suggestions to be improved. Conclusion: For improving the combat readiness condition of K-1 main battle tank, the maintenance policies and regulation must be revised for the parts of the weakness. In addition, the collection way of the operation and maintenance data must be redesigned.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate factors related to depression of elderly women in a Metropolitan city. Methods: Subjects included 118 elderly women older than 65 years of age. Structured questionnaires were used for data collection, and descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed for data analysis. Results: A significant difference in depression was observed according to number of chronic diseases(F=4.963, p=.001). Significant factors influencing depression included number of chronic diseases (${\beta}$=.265, p<.01), cognitive function (${\beta}$=.290, p<.01), quality of sleep(${\beta}$=.212, p<.01), and nutritional state (${\beta}$=.161, p<.05). These factors explained 54.2% of the variance. Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest the need for development of nursing strategies to decrease the incidence of depression in elderly women.
