  • The AMBA(Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture) system is one of the most important elements having an influence upon system performance in ARM-based SoC environments. The system guarantees easy connection and good performance as a 32-bit bus system for ARM processors. In this paper, we analyze arbitration algorithms for the AHB bus of the AMBA system and propose an efficient algorithm to improve the performance of the bus system.

  • Because of the demands for high performance and high integrated system, the needs for optimal platform becomes more importance. Optimal platform can handle more data effectively with same resources. AMBA(Advanced Microprocessor Bus Architecture)$^{TM}$ defines on-chip communication standard for designing high performance embedded micro-controllers. It is consisted of AHB, ASB and APB. It can support fast implementation and reliability in system that is composed with reusable IPs. DMAC is one of master in system and generate master signals of AHB to communicate data from one slave(peripheral or memory) to another slave. It can reduce burden of CPU and increase system performance. We designed DMAC based on AMBA and it supports 13 Channels. Each channel can be controlled by software program. It decides channel's priority using round-robin method. It can support P2P, P2M, M2P and P2P communication.

  • This paper describes an AMBA-based IP to perform forward and inverse transform and quantization required in the H.264 video compression standard. The transform and quantization circuit was optimized for area and performance. The AHB wrapper was added to the circuit for the AMBA-based operation. The user of the IP can specify how long the bus may be occupied by the IP and also where the video data are stored in the external memory. The function of the proposed IP based on AMBA Specification was verified on the platform board with Xilinx FPGA and ARM9 processor. We fabricated an MPW chip using $0.25{\mu}m$ standard cells and observed its correct operations on silicon.

  • The importance for Internet security has being increased and the Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) standard, which incorporates cryptographic algorithms, has been developed as one solution to this problem. IPSec provides security services in IP-Layer using IP Authentication Header (AH) and IP Encapsulation Security Payload (ESP). In this paper, we propose IPSec cryptographic processor design based AMBA architecture. Our design which is comprised Rijndael cryptographic algorithm and HAMC-SHA-1 authentication algorithm supports the cryptographic requirements of IP AH, IP ESP, and any combination of these two protocols. Also, our IPSec cryptographic processor operates as AMBA AHB Slave. We designed IPSec cryptographic processor using Xilinx ISE 5.2i and VHDL, and implemented our design using Xilinx's FPGA Vertex XCV600E.

  • In this paper we present a switch wrapper for an AMBA AXI, which is an efficient on-chip-network interface compared to bus-based interfaces in a multiprocessor SoC. The AXI uses an idea of NoC to provide the increasing demands on communication bandwidth within a single chip. A switch wrapper for AXI is located between a interconnection network and two IPs connecting them together. It carries out a mode of routing to interconnection network and executes protocol conversions to provide compatibility in IP reuse. A switch wrapper consists of a direct router, AHB-AXI converters, interface modules and a controller modules. We propose the design of a all-in-one type switch wrapper.

  • RISC-V is an open instruction set architecture (ISA) developed in 2010 at UC Berkeley, and active research is being conducted as a processor to compete with ARM. In this paper, we propose an SoC system including an RV32I ISA-based 32-bit 5-stage pipeline processor and AHB bus master. The proposed RISC-V processor supports 37 instructions, excluding FENCE, ECALL, and EBREAK instructions, out of a total of 40 instructions based on RV32I ISA. In addition, the RISC-V processor can be connected to peripheral devices such as BRAM, UART, and TIMER using the AHB-lite bus protocol through the proposed AHB bus master. The proposed SoC system was implemented in Arty A7-35T FPGA with 1,959 LUTs and 1,982 flip-flops. Furthermore, the proposed hardware has a maximum operating frequency of 50 MHz. In the Dhrystone benchmark, the proposed processor performance was confirmed to be 0.48 DMIPS.

  • H.264/AVC video compression standard has been adopted for DMB, digital TV and various next generation broadcasting, communication and consumer electronics applications, and modern DVR system is also based on H.264/AVC standard. Although PC-based DVRs use PCI bus for main interface typically, H.264/AVC codec for SOCs use AHB bus for host interface. In this paper, we present an implementation of PCI to AHB interface module for H.264/AVC codec to efficiently communicate with a PC and experimental results.

  • In this paper, we describe implemented DMAC (Direct Memory Access Controller) architecture on Altera's $Excalibur^{TM}$ that includes industry-standard $ARM922T^{TM}$ 32-bit RISC processor core operating at 200 MHz. We implemented DMAC based on AMBA (Advanced Micro-controller Bus Architecture) AHB (Advanced Micro-performance Bus) interface. Implemented DMAC has 8-channel and can extend supportable channel count according to user application. We used round-robin method for priority selection. Implemented DMAC supports data transfer between Memory-to-Memory, Memory-to-Peripheral and Peripheral-to-Memory. The max transfer count is 1024 per a time and it can support byte, half-word and word transfer according to AHB protocol (HSIZE signals). We implemented with VHDL and functional verification using $ModelSim^{TM}$. Then, we synthesized using $LeonardoSpectrum^{TM}$ with Altera $Excalibur^{TM}$ library. We did FPGA P&R and targeting using $Quartus^{TM}$. We can use implemented DMAC module at any system that needs high speed and broad bandwidth data transfers.

  • We can integrate more IP blocks on a silicon die as the development of fabrication technologies and EDA tools. Consequently, we can design complicated SoC architecture including multi-processors. However, most of existing SoC buses have bottleneck in on-chip communication because of shared bus architectures, which result in the performance degradation of systems. In most cases, the performance of a multi-processor system is determined by efficient on-chip communication and the well-balanced distribution of computation rather than the performance of the processors. We propose an efficient SoC Network Architecture(SNA) using crossbar routers which provide a solution to ensure enough communication bandwidth. The SNA can significantly reduce the bottleneck of on-chip communication by providing multi-channels for multi-masters. According to the proposed architecture, we design a model system for the SNA. The proposed architecture has a better efficiency by $40\%$ than the AMBA AHB according to a simulation result.

  • For high density SoC design, on-chip communication based on bus interconnection encounters bandwidth limitation while an NoC(Network-on-Chip) approach suffers from unacceptable complexity in its Implementation. This paper introduces a new on-chip communication protocol, SNP (SoC Network Protocol) to overcome these problems. In SNP, conventional on-chip bus signals are categorized into three groups, control, address, and data and only one set of wires is used to transmit all three groups of signals, resulting in the dramatic decrease of the number of wires. SNP efficiently supports master-master communication as well as master-slave communication with symmetric channels. A sequencing rule of signal groups is defined as a part of SNP specification and a phase-restoration feature is proposed to avoid redundant signals transmitted repeatedly over back-to-back transactions. Simulation results show that SNP provides about the same bandwidth with only $54\%$ of wires when compared with AMBA AHB.
