A Secure AIS Protocol Suggestion with Analyses of the Standard AIS Protocol (표준 AIS 프로토콜 분석을 통한 보안 AIS 프로토콜 제안)

  • Recently, marine accidents such as the sinking accident Mongol freighter ship and the sinking accident of Sewol ferry in Jindo continuously happen. In order to decrease the number of these marine accidents, Korean ships are obliged to follow the AIS(Automatic Identification System) system. The AIS protocol includes all information for sailing ships. However, the standard AIS protocol does not provide any security function, In addition, it is possible to hijack the standard AIS protocol in case of using a satellite communication device called FUNcuve Dongle Pro+. Therefore, this paper analyzes weak points of the security in the standard AIS protocol. Furthermore, this paper ensures reliability by marking the MAC Address of sender and receiver for secure communication and suggests the protocol that can securely send data, using the VPN Tunnelling method. Therefore, the suggested AIS protocol provides the secure communication to the AIS protocol and protect the messages in the AIS protocol, which can serve safe voyages by decreasing the marine accidents.

The operation and maintenance of AIS for aids to navigation are required to efficient method. With this actuality, sea advanced nation of EU, USA, Japan that has been apply for developing AtoN AIS equipment that is connected equipment of technology standard in IALA. Because of it is expected to depend equipment in income, that is required to domestic technology of the AtoN AIS. This paper is targeted to development that is suitable automation AtoN AIS equipment in environmental peculiarity for constructor AtoN operating administration center. It has been realization send protocol for information interchange.

  • AIS-ASM is a one of the study to provide a variety of maritime safety information as well as ship's position and navigational information that is their own function since 2004. This study aims to reduce the marine officer's workload through automating marine officer's mandatory reporting items using the one of the next maritime digital communication technology (ASM2.0). For this purpose, we designed and experimented of the ASM2.0 protocol through analyzing a domestic regulation about passenger flight and AIS-ASM message.

  • At present the identification of vessels is still depending on the OOW (Officer Of Wateh) in VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), which is completed by radar, and also by the combination of VHF radio and VHF direction finder. However, with the development of port transportation and economic, this conventional way of identification can't satisfy more and more request for the information that the VTS needs from the vessels. In such a case, the AIS(Automatic Identification System) precept which is based on STDMA (Self-organized Time Division Multiple Access) technique is put forward by IMO (International Maritime Organization). AIS can automatically provide the information, including own ship's identification, type, position, course, speed, and other information to the appropriately equipped coast station and other ships. At the same time it can also automatically monitor and track the nearby ships similarly fitted with AIS. On the basis of describing the whole comprising and the format of transmission information of AIS, this paper mainly studies the key communication techniques in AIS, such as STDMA protocol, net synchronization and GMSK(Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying)technique, and so on. At last this paper briefly introduces the recommendation decided by IMO on forcing the sea-going ships to fixed with AIS equipments, and it continuos with the unexploited potential of AIS if it applies in VTS.

  • A variety of sensors and equipment are installed on passenger ships. Data collection from these sensors and associated equipment is required for the safe navigation and behavior analysis of ships, but when the ship sails out of the area where it is not possible to use the LTE communication, other types of networks have to be able to support to transmit these information. such as AIS, satellite communication and MF/HF. In this paper, we survey data protocol of onboard sensors and design ASM messages to transfer sensor data on board to the shore-side system.

Detection Probability Evaluation of LEO Satellites based Automatic Identification System for a Maritime-Terrestrial Integrated Network (해상육상통합환경에서 저궤도 위성기반 AIS 시스템의 검출확률 성능평가)

  • In this paper, the feasibility of LEO(low earth orbit) satellite-based automatic identification system (SAT-AIS) for the coastal area of the South Korea is evaluated in the context of ship AIS transmission detection probability. We evaluate and compare AIS signal detection probability of ORBCOMM satellites and LEO-one satellites considering link budget, SOTDMA protocol and satellite's swath width. The simulation determines the total number of vessels served by those satellites according to satellite's swath width and thus, By simulation results, the ORBCOMM SAT-AIS system outperforms LEO-one SAT-AIS system. The suggested ORBCOMM based SAT-AIS system can be a solution to resolve the existing limited transmission distance problem of the conventional ship-to-shore AIS system.

  • In this paper, the feasibility of ORBCOMM satellite-based automatic identification system (SAT-AIS) is evaluated in the context of ship AIS slot collision probability depending on reporting rate, We evaluate detection probability evaluation of ORBCOMM satellite-based AIS considering link budget, SOTDMA protocol and satellite's swath width. The simulation determines the total number of vessels served by ORBCOMM satellite according to satellite's swath width, AIS slot allocation and reporting rate. By simulation results, the ORBCOMM satellite-based AIS slot collision is increased directly proportional to the total number of vessels and the more detection probability evaluation of ORBCOMM satellite-based AIS degrader, the more sip AIS reporting rate shorter.

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) recommends the installation of an Automatic Identification System (AIS) according to requirements by SOLAS to avoid maritime collision. AIS provides traffic information of other ships that may be used for maritime traffic control, SAR (Search and Rescue) and collision avoidance to apply safety management. In this paper, preliminary results to implement an aeronautical surveillance transceiver using AIS transceiver based on ADS-B concepts are described. Although altitude information is not required for AIS since the AIS is operated at MSL (Mean Sea Level), altitude information can be extracted by a GPS (Global Positioning System) chip-set in the AIS transceiver. ADS-B transceiver is implemented by defining a surveillance message format including the altitude information and modifying SOTDMA (Self-Organizing Time Division Multiple Access) protocol. Ground tests and flight tests are performed to validate the implementation results.

  • AIS-ASM is one of the studies to provide a variety of maritime safety information as well as the information on a ship's position that is their own function, and AIS-ASM has been implemented with adjustment of the relevant regulations since 2004. However, it was reported that the increased use of ASM message on the existing AIS channel affects the part of the existing AIS own function such as the transmission of the ship's position and safe-related information. Also, seamless MSP service is difficult to provide at a low transmission rate of the existing AIS channel. This study aims to reduce the marine officer's workload through automating captain's mandatory reporting items using the one of the next maritime digital communication technology (ASM2.0). For this purpose, we designed and realized the ASM2.0 protocol through analyzing domestic regulations about passenger flight and AIS-ASM message.
