  • Recently, forced ventilating air conditioning system has been widely used in modern buildings. However, It is obvious that this kind of system may affect on the response of fire detectors at real fire incidents, especially, on the ionization smoke detector, which is critically influenced by air stream. Therefore we studied to verify the response characteristics of air stream by ionization smoke detector for the design of facilities in practice. In this study, experiments were executed to examine the correlation between air velocity and the ionization detector's responses with var-ious air velocity and smoke densities in the simulated test room. As a result of experiments, ionization detector's operating time is in reverse proportion to air velocity. And the detector shows more sensitive reaction when the velocity of smoke stream increase over 60 cm/s. In addition, it was shown that ionization smoke detector is more sensitive to smoldering fires in paper than that in petro-chemicals.

  • A key comparison has been made between the air-kerma standards of the National Institute of Metrology (NIM), China, and other Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) members in the medium-energy X-ray. This paper reviews the primary standard Free-air ionization chamber correction factor experimental method and Monte Carlo simulation method in the NIM. The experimental method and the Monte Carlo simulation method are adopted to obtain the correction factor for the medium-energy X-ray primary standard free-air ionization chamber at 100 kV, 135 kV, 180 kV, 250 kV four CCRI reference qualities. The correction factor has already been submitted to the APMP as key comparison data and the results are in good agreement with those obtained in previous studies. This study shows that the experimental method and the EGSnrc simulation method are usually used in the measurement of the correction factor. In particular, the application of the simulation methods is more common.

  • There was no significant difference in the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) between physical aerosols, NaCl and smoke, and biological aerosols, airborne MS2 virus and P. fluorescens, which implicate that the hybrid-type of air purifier, applying the unipolar ion emission and the radiant catalytic ionization, imposed identical reduction effect on both physical aerosol and bioaerosol. Ventilation decreases the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization because high ventilation diminishes the particle concentration reduction effect. The particle removal efficiency decreases with increase in the chamber volume because of the augmented ion diffusion and higher ion wall loss rate. Particle size affects the efficiency of air ionization. The efficiency is high for particles with very small diameter because reduction of charge increases with particle size. If there is no increasing supply of ions, the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization increases with respect to initial concentration of particles because of the large space charge effect at high particle concentration and amplified electric field.

  • AAPM TG43 report has recommended to measure air kerma strength with the strength of source. Main purpose of this study is to verify the accuracy of air kerma strength provided by manufacturer. Materials for this study were MAX-4001 Electrometer, HDR 1000 Plus of the corporation of standard imaging, and 6 french bronchial Applicator with 1000 mm. we measured ionization current in 10-90 mm range from the bottom of the central axis of chamber. The reference point of calibration displayed by the maximum ionization current in the ionization current curve was measured, and air kerma strength was computed from the maximum ionization current. we acquired 50 mm distance to correspond with the maximum ionization current in the ionization current curve. Its distance has perfectly fitted to the source reference point of calibration certificate of UW-ADCL. Air kerma strength computed value has measured about 0.5% more than calibration value provided by manufacturer. Air kerma strength of calibration certificate provided by manufacturer has acquired reliable results. This study shows that considering the move error of dwell position of source and the dead space length in well-type chamber is a good way to get an accurate result.

  • In precise measurement of air kerma with cavity ionization chambers, the effect of wall attenuation and scatter are corrected by Kwall and that of nonuniformity by Knu. Using the EGS4 code, we calculated these two correction factors. Correction factors calculated for two different-sized cylindrical ionization chamber differ by up to 0.7% from those obtained by measurements.

  • Edible sprouts are highly nutritious, containing numerous health-promoting phytochemicals and nutrients. However, the process of sprouting is subject to potential contamination by microorganisms attached to the seed coat. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of air anions generated by spray ionization on growth and sterilization of edible sprouts. Treatment with air anions has positive effects on plant growth and sterilization in 4 kinds of sprouts. Hypocotyl length in red cabbage and kale increased approximately 1.26-fold and radicle length of lettuce, red cabbage, and kale increased 1.4 to 1.6-fold compared to the control. The fresh weight of sprouts in the spray-ionization treatment was significantly (16.0-38.5%) higher than that of the controls. Radicle activity in sprouts exposed to anions was higher than that of the control in all species. Bacterial counts on lettuce, red cabbage, and tatsoi decreased significantly (by 41%, 66%, and 19%, respectively), and bacterial colonies also declined in drainage water. Our findings suggest that spray-ionization treatment is useful for improving sprout growth and for sterilizing sprouts.

  • Two $^{192}$ Ir HDR brachytherapy sources were calibrated with a Farmer ionization chamber in air method and in a PMMA cylindrical phantom. The calibration air method used ionization chamber with buildup cap, and 8 variation distances for center-to-center of the source to chamber. In the optimum distance the measured activity, especially for the high activity source, deviation was 0.3% from the activity provided by manufacturer. Calibration with a PMMA cylindrical phantom was less sensitive, and suitable for quick check method with accuracy less than 10%.

  • In this paper, reduction characteristics of the ac flashover voltage in the horizontal air gap of sphere-sphere/needle-needle electrode system were investigated when the combustion flame was present near the high-voltage electrodes. The voltage and current waveforms were measured, when the flashover is occurred, in order to examine the flashover polarity by flame. The reduction characteristics of ac flashover voltage were discussed with the thermal ionization process, the relative air density and the deflection phenomena in the shape of flames that changed by the corona wind and coulomb\`s force. As the results of an experimental investigation, It was found that the reduction of flashover voltages in sphere-sphere system, in comparison with the no-flame case, are 79.9 [%] for k=0, 82.9 [%] for k=0.5, 87.5 [%] for k=1.0, 85.0 [%] for h=0 [cm], 40.8 [%] for h=5 [cm] and 28.2 [%] for h=9 [cm] when ac voltage is applied.

  • A series of measurements was peformed between KAERI and PNNL, U.S.A at KAERI secondary calibration laboratory to intercompare and verify the KAERI reference photon radiation fields by using air equivalent plastic walled ionization chambers, Different ionization chambers of two laboratories were used to determine the air kerma rate, free-in-air, at reference positions in the KAERI photon radiation fields, As the results, the agreement in the cross measurements between two laboratories was found to be within less than ${\pm}$ 3 %. This degree of consistency was considered to be encouraging, because each laboratory maintains independently its calibration traceablity with its national primary standard
