  • Bubble size is a key parameter for an accurate prediction of bubble behaviours in the multi-dimensional two-phase flow. In the current STAR CCM+ CFD code, a mechanistic bubble size model $S{\gamma}$ is available for the prediction of bubble size in the flow channel. As another model, Yun model is developed based on DEBORA that is subcooled boiling data in high pressure. In this study, numerical simulation for the gas-liquid two-phase flow was conducted to validate and confirm the performance of $S{\gamma}$ model and Yun model, using the commercial CFD code STAR CCM+ ver. 10.02. For this, local bubble models was evaluated against the air-water data from DEDALE experiments (1995) and Hibiki et al. (2001) in the vertical pipe. All numerical results of $S{\gamma}$ model predicted reasonably the two-phase flow parameters and Yun model is needed to be improved for the prediction of air-water flow under low pressure condition.

  • In this study, we numerically investigate the detonation characteristics (detonation velocity and pressure) of a hybrid ethylene-air and RDX mixture using two-phase model. Compared with detonation of pure ethylene-air mixture, the detonation of the hybrid ethylene-air and RDX mixture has higher pressure and stronger impulse because the hybrid mixture has additional chemical heat release of RDX particles. To validate the numerical results using two-phase model, we compare the experimental data which show changes of detonation pressure and velocity according to concentration of RDX particles.

  • This study examined how specific aspects of epistemic cognition are developed in elementary students during modeling activities, using the Apt-AIR framework. The study focused on a class unit titled 'Shall We Find Out What the Landscape of a Riverside Looks Like?' which is part of the land chapter in the third-grade Korean elementary science curriculum. Ambitious Science Teaching (AST) was applied as a teaching strategy to enhance students' model construction. Seven science classes were conducted in line with the core practices of AST, with 29 elementary school students participating in the study. The classes were organized into four stages: initial model composition, inquiry activity, group model composition-sharing, and final model construction. The class activities at each stage were analyzed using both the AIR model, i.e., epistemic aim and value (A), epistemic ideals (I), and reliable epistemic processes (R), and the multi-faceted framework for epistemic thinking from the Apt-AIR framework. The results of the study revealed that in science classes emphasizing modeling activities based on the core practices of AST, the elementary students progressively developed more sophisticated explanatory models that included causal relationships explaining the topographic differences between the upstream and downstream sections of a river. This result was due to their engagement in constructing initial models to describe phenomena, supplementing the initial models using data collected in the model experiment, and participating in discussions to share and evaluate group models. Additionally, from the perspective of the Apt-AIR framework, the aspects of epistemic cognition demonstrated by the elementary students in their modeling activities were appropriate for engaging with cognitive processes related to epistemic aims and values, epistemic ideals, and reliable processes. The other four aspects of the Apt-AIR framework, however, were not performed as effectively. In particular, the application of reliable epistemic processes for knowledge construction required more improvement.

• The absence of a simple and general analytical model has been a problem in the design and analysis of desiccant-assisted air-conditioning systems. In this study, such an analytical model has been developed based on the approximate integral solution of the coupled transient ordinary differential equations for the heat and mass transfer processes in a desiccant wheel. It turned out that the initial conditions should be determined by the solution of four linear algebraic equations including the heat and mass transfer equations for the air flow as well as the energy and mass conservation equations for the desiccant bed. It is also shown that time-averaged exit air temperature and humidity relations could be given in terms of the heat and mass transfer effectiveness.
