  • We report a new direct patterning method, called liquid bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM), for the formation of two- or three-dimensional structures with feature sizes between tens of nanometers and tens of micron over large areas. LB-nTM is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mold to a substrate via a liquid bridge between them. This procedure can be adopted for automated direct printing machines that generate patterns of functional materials with a wide range of feature sizes on diverse substrates. Arrays of TIPS-PEN TFTs were fabricated on 4" polyethersulfone (PES) substrates by LB-nTM using PDMS molds. An inverted staggered structure was employed in the TFT device fabrication. A 150 nm-thick indium-tin oxide (ITO) gate electrode and a 200 nm-thick SiO2dielectric layer were formed on a PES substrate by sputter deposition. An array of TIPS-PEN patterns (thickness: 60 nm) as active channel layers was fabricated on the substrate by LB-nTM. The nominal channel length of the TIPS-PEN TFT was 10 mm, while the channel width was 135 mm. Finally, the source and drain electrodes of 200 nm-thick Ag were defined on the substrate by LB-nTM. The TIPS-PEN TFTs can endure strenuous bending and are also transparent in the visible range, and therefore potentially useful for flexible and invisible electronics.

  • Environment-friendly, commercially-available agricultural products were investigated for antimicrobial activity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, as a pathogen of sclerotium disease. Then ${\beta}$-thujaplicin from Chamaecyparis obtuse was investigated for antifungal activity against six kinds of pathogenic fungi. It showed a statistically significant (p <0.001) growth inhibition effect on Sclerotinia sclerotiorum as a pathogen of sclerotium disease, Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 as a pathogen of damping off, Phytophthora capsici as a pathogen of phytophthora blight, and Colletotrichum coccodes as a pathogen of anthracnose at a concentration of 50 ppm and on Stemphylium solani as a pathogen of spotting disease and Alternaria alternata as a pathogen of black mold at a concentration of 100 ppm. In conclusion, these results indicate that it may be possible to develop environment-friendly agricultural products using ${\beta}$-thujaplicin compounds.

  • Among the radioactive wastes generated from the nuclear power plant, a radioactive nuclide such as $^{129}I$ is classified as a difficult-to-measure (DTM) nuclide, owing to its low specific activity. Therefore, the establishment of an analytical procedure, including a chemical separation for $^{129}I$ as a representative DTM, becomes essential. In this report, the adsorption and recovery rate were measured by adding $^{125}I$ as a radio-isotopic tracer ($t_{1/2}$ = 60.14 d) to the simulation sample, in order to measure the activity concentration of $^{129}I$ in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant. The optimum condition for the maximum recovery yield of iodine on the anion exchange resins (AG1 x2, 50-100 mesh, $Cl^-$ form) was found to be at pH 7. In this report, the effect of the boron content in a pressurized-water reactor primary coolant on the separation process of $^{129}I$ was examined, as was the effect of $^3H$ on the measurement of the activity of iodine. As a result, no influence of the boron content and of the simultaneous $^3H$ presence was found with activity concentrations of $^3H$ lower than 50 Bq/mL, and with a boron concentration of less than 2,000 ${\mu}g/mL$.

  • A carboxymethyl-cellulase (CMCase) was purified from the culture supernatant of Bacillus sp. KD1014 by ultrafiltration, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and a series of chromatography on QAE-Sephadex A-50, hydroxylapatite and Sephadex G-75. The purified CMCase was a single protein of 32 kDa, showed an optimum activity at $60^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0, and had a half-life of 23 min at $70^{\circ}C$. The enzyme activity was not influenced by metal ions such as $Mg^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;K^+,\;Zn^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$ at a concentration of 1.0 mM, partially inhibited by $Mn^{2+}$ and $Ag^+$, and significantly inhibited by pentachlorophenol (PCP). The purified enzyme showed a 3.9-times higher activity on lichenan than on CMC, but hardly cleaved xylan, starch, avicel, laminarin, filter paper and levan. The results of activity staining of the purified enzyme separated by native and denaturing gel electrophoresis suggested that the CMCase might exist in dimeric, oligomeric or aggregated form as well as in monomeric form. The enzymatic cleavage products from cellotetraose indicated that the CMCase possessed transglycosylation activity.

  • This study concernes the decomposition of cyanide ion in electroplating plant wastewater and COD variation of photodeveloping wastewater under various conditions. Determinations of CN- concentration were carried out by AgNO$_3$ titration method. The sample solutions were pretreated by passing ozone and decompositions were checked as a function of time for ozone treatment. Analysis of film developing wastewater was carried out by KMnO$_4$ method. Electroplating plant wastewater was also examined at various pH; decomposition rate of cyanide ion was found to increase at higher pH. Time required for the decomposition could be shortened by removing the heavy metal ions under alkaline condition. The effect of temperature on decomposition was studied at 40$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}C$. The result was better at 40$^{\circ}C$ although time for decomposition was almost same at both temperatures. Analysis of film developing wastewater revealed that COD decrease was faster during the first 1 to 2 hours. However, further decrease could not be effected. The existence of unknown special organics resistant to the decomposition was believed to be the reason.

  • In the present study, the piezoelectricity and polarization of multilayer ceramic actuator, being designed to stack PMN-PZ-PT ceramic layers and Ag-Pd electrode layers alternatively, were investigated under a consideration of geometric factor, the volume ratio of the ceramic to the electrode layers. The actuators were fabricated by tape casting of $0.2Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.38PbZrO_3-0,42PbTiO_3$ followed by lamination and burnout & co-firing processes. The actuators of $10\times10\times0.6~2\textrm{mm}^3$ in size were formed in a way that $60 ~ 200\mu\textrm{m}$ thick were stacked alternatively with $5\mu\textrm{m}$ thick electrode layer. Increases in polarization and electric field-induced displacement with thickness of the ceramic layer were attributed to change of $90^{\circ}$/$180^{\circ}$ domain ratio, which was affected by interlayer internal stress. The piezoelectricity and actuation behaviors were found to depend upon the volume ratio (or thickness ratio) of ceramic to electrode layers.

  • In this study, Platinum(Pt) nanoparticles were synthesized by using polyol process which is one of the liquid phase reduction methods. Dihydrogen hexachloroplatinate (IV) hexahydrate $(H_2PtCl_6{\cdot}6H_2O)$, as a precursor, was dissolved in ethylene glycol and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) was added as metal salt for shape control of Pt particle. Also, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), as capping agent, was added to reduce the size of particle and to separate the particles. The size of Pt nanoparticles was evaluated particle size analyzer (PSA). The size and morphology of Pt nanoparticles were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM). Synthesized Pt nanoparticles were studied with varying time and temperature of polyol process. Pt nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized with controlled sizes in the range 5-10 and 20-40 nm with cube and multiple-cube shapes.

  • A simple strategy was developed based on polyelectrolyte/silver nanocomposite to obtain humidity-sensitive membranes. The major component of a humid membrane is the polyTEAMPS/silver nanocomposite obtained by thermal heating the mixture of a polyelectrolyte and silver isopropylcarbamate complex. Humidity sensors prepared from polyTEAMPS/silver (w/w=100/0 and 100/6) nanocomposites had an average impedance of 292, 8.83 and $0.86\;k{\Omega}$, and 5,327, 140 and $0.93\;k{\Omega}$ at 30,60 and 95% relative humidity (RH), respectively. Hysteresis, temperature dependence and response time were also measured. Activation energies and complex impedance spectroscopy of the various components of the polyelectrolyte/silver nanocomposite films were examined for the humidity-sensing membrane.

  • In this study, we propose a miniaturized micro-ceramic heater device. After screen-printing a silver paste between pre-sintered two aluminum oxide plates to integrate a heating circuit, the device was fabricated through a low-temperature sintering process. In order to configure the optimal heating circuit integration condition, the output current evaluation and heating test were performed according to the number of screen prints of the silver paste at various voltages. A silver paste-based heating circuit printed with a line width of 200 ㎛ and a thickness of 60 ㎛ was successfully integrated on a pre-sintered alumina substrate through a low-temperature sintering process. In the case of the 5 times printed device, the thermal response showed a response rate of 18.19 ℃/sec. To demonstrate feasibility of the proposed device in the medical field, such as bio-tissue suturing and hemostasis, a voltage was applied to pig tissue in the device to test tissue change due to heat generated from the device. These results show the possibility that the proposed small ceramic heater could be used in the medical field based on its excellent temperature response.
