  • For the maximun yield of the forest trees in the forest management, the growth of annual ring area of the major forest trees was analysed in the four areas in South Korea. The time to the maximum productivity and the optimum cutting time for the maximum yield were estimated. The growth curve of annual ring area showed sigmoid like that of other organisms. Only the growth coefficient among the areas between Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Pinus koraiensis represented significance (5% level). The growth coefficient among forest trees between Pinus densiflora and Abies holophylla, Larix kaempferi and Carpinus laxiflora, Larix kaempferi and Quercus mongolica, Larix kaempferi and Quercus serrata, Larix kaempferi and Pinus koraiensis, and Larix kaempferi and Abies holophylla represented significance (5% level). Among eight forest trees, the time to maximum productivity (tm) of Larix kaempferi was the earliest (21.4 year), and Abies holophylla was the latest (91.9 year). The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield (tc) of L. kaempferi was the earliest (29.4 year) and that of A, holophylla was the latest (122.2 year) of all communities. The optimum cutting time for the maximum yield was 1.33 times as late as the time to the maximum productivity. If the growth of annual ring area as the forest tree for wood is regarded, L. kaempferi and P. densiflora are thought to be more economical than A. holophylla and P. koraiensis.

  • This study aims to determine the ideal feed speed of a resistograph to evaluate the number of tree rings in several tree species. The needle speed was fixed at 1,500 r/min. Herein, various tree species, such as Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, and Zelkova serrata, were considered for experiments. Results showed that the most proper feed speed for Zelkova serrata, Larix kaempferi, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Abies holophylla, and Pinus koraiensis was 75, 100, 100, 150, and 175 cm/min, respectively. However, in all the cases, the electric resistance values of tree ring narrower than 1 mm were not suitable for determining tree-ring boundaries. Upon comparing the inter-annual time series of ring widths and electric resistance values of resistograph, a meaningful synchronization was verified. If resistograph would be improved to the extent that it can measure tree rings narrower than 1 mm, it can replace the conventional method used for counting the number of tree rings in the increment cores. Additionally, it can also be used to investigate the tree growth.

  • Warp phenomenon seems to be ubiquitous among spiral galaxies, and a a number of mechanisms have been suggested as the origin including cosmic infall and tidal interactions. In this work, we compare warp characteristics of cluster spirals and the ones in the field in order to investigate the influence of environment on warping, in particular of gas disks. We make use of a tilted-ring modeling (TRM) method to VLA HI (21cm) data cubes of carefully selected 20 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. The TRM allows us to probe kinematics, e.g., inclination, position angle, and velocity dispersion of HI disks. We compare the properties of each tilted-ring component to mean properties based on optical images. In this contribution, we present preliminary yet important findings on the warp characteristics of spiral galaxies in dense environment, and discuss possible origins of those kinematical structures.

  • The objective of this study is to identify the species of 17 wooden Buddhist statues of the late Joseon Dynasty (the 17th and 18th century) in Jeollado, southwestern region of Korea. The bodies of statues were made of Ginkgo (Gingko biloba L.: 88%) and alder (Alnus spp.: 12%). The hands of statues were alder(64%), willow (Salix spp.: 27%) and Ginkgo(9%). The bottoms of hollow bodies were covered all with Japanese red-pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z., 'sonamu') panels. The main species of statue body, Ginkgo tree was known to be introduced to Korea from China with Buddhism. The results indicated that Ginkgo trees of Korea in the 17th century had already become large and rich enough to be used for most of statues. Ginkgo wood has low shrinkage and even texture, which are crucial for carving sculptures. Alder and willow woods used for statue hands have fine and firm textures. The pedestals for these statues were also made of red pine wood. Red pine woods have rather high shrinkage and low hardness, but it is versatile woods strong enough to support heavy statues.

  • Various attempts have been made to explain the: pronounced seasonal and universal time (UT) variations of geomagnetic indices. As one of such attempts, we analyze the hourly-averaged auroral electroject indices obtained during the past 20 years. The AU and AL indices maximize during summer and equinoctial months, respectively. By normalizing the contribution of the solar conductivity enhancement to the AU index, or to the eastward electrojet, it is found that the AU also follows the same semiannual variation pattern of the AL index, suggesting that the electric field is the main modulator of the semiannual magnetic variation. The fact that the variation pattern of the yearly-mean AU index follows the mirror image of the AL index provides another indication that the electric field is the main modulator of magnetic disturbance. The pronounced UT variations of the auroral electrojet indices are also noted. To determine the magnetic activity dependence, the probability of recording a given activity level of AU and AL during each UT is examined. The UT variation of the AL index, thus obtained, shows a maximum at around 1200-1800 UT and a minimum around 0000-0800 UT particularly during winter. It is closely associated with the rotation of the geomagnetic pole around the rotational axis, which results in the change of the solar-originated ionospheric conductivity distribution over the polar region. On the other hand the UT variation is prominent during disturbed periods, indicating that the latitudinal mismatch between the AE stations and the auroral electrojet belt is responsible for it. Although not as prominent as the AL index, the probability distribution of the AU also shows two UT peaks. We confirm that the Dst index shows more prominent seasonal variation than the AE indices. However, the UT variation of the Dst index is only noticeable during the main phase of a magnetic storm. It is a combined result of the uneven distribution of the Dst stations and frequent developments of the partial ring current and substorm wedge current preferentially during the main phase.

  • Steric and electronic parameters of 4'-substituents play significant roles in steering the conformation of nucleoside analogues. In order to investigate the relationship of 4'-substituent with antiviral enhancement, novel 4'-phenyl-5'-norcarbocyclic adenosine phosphonic acid analogues were racemically synthesized via de novo acyclic stereoselective route from propionaldehyde 5. The phenyl substituted cyclopentenols 15a and 15b as key intermediates were successfully constructed via reiterative carbonyl addition of Grignard reagents and ring-closing metathesis of corresponding divinyl 14. The synthesized nucleoside phosphonic acids analogues 19, 20, 21, and 23 were subjected to antiviral screening against HIV-1.

  • The HPFRCCs show the multiple crack and damage tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For practical application, it is needed to investigate the fractural behavior and of HPFRCCs and understand the micro-mechanism of cement matrix with reinforcing fiber. The objectives of this paper are to examine the compressive behavior, fracture and damage process of HPFRCC by acoustic emission technique. Total four series were tested, and the main variables were the hybrid type, polyethylene (PE) and steel cord (SC), and fiber volume fraction. The damage progress by compressive behavior of the HPFRCCs is characteristic for the hybrid fiber type and volume fraction. And from acoustic emission (AE) parameter value, it is found that the second and third compressive load cycles resulted in successive decrease of the ring-down count rate as compared with the first compressive load cycle.

  • Let R be a ommutative ring with unity and F a finite free R-module. For a nonnegative integer r, there exists a natural filtration of$S_r(S_2F)$ such that its associated graded module is isomorphic to $\Sigma_{{\lambda}{\epsilon}{\tau}_r}\;L_{\lambda}F$, where ${\Gamma}_{\gamma}$ set of partitions such that $$\mid${\lambda}$\mid$-2r,{{\widetilde}{\lambda}}-{{\widetilde}{\lambda}}_1},...,{{\widetilde}{\lambda}}_k},\;each\;{{\widetilde}{\lambda}}_t}$,is even. We call such filtrations plethysm formulas. We extend the above plethysm formula to the version of chain complexes. By plethysm formula we mean the composition of universally free functors. $Let{\emptyset}:G->F$ be a morphism of finite free R-modules. We construct the natural decomposition of $S_{r}(S_2{\emptyset})$,up to filtrations, whose associated graded complex is isomorphic to ${\Sigma}_{{\lambda}{\varepsilon}{\tau}}_r}\;L_{\lambda}{\emptyset}$.

  • A series of compounds, N-(2-substituted-1-carboxy)vinylazetidinones were successfully synthesized in order to test the hypothesis that biological activities of ${\beta}$-lactam antibiotics could be attributed to the smooth flow of electrons after a nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon in the ${\beta}$-lactam ring. After introduction of aminothiazolylacetamido group at 3-position of the azetidinones, their biological activities were evaluated. Their low activities led to the conclusion that the smooth electron flow in ${\beta}$-lactams in not the sufficient source for the biological activities.

  • Natural histrionicotoxin, a substance isolated from the skins of the "arrow poison frog" and its fully hydrogenated derivative, perhydrohistrionicotoxin (pHTX), have been the subject of synthetic investigation because of their important neurophysiological activity and a unique framework. In this work, we could obtained the appropriately functionalized spiropiperidine compound as a formal precursor of perhydrohistrionicotoxin. An important feature of this synthesis is the creation of a stereogenic center by using Ireland-Claisen Rearrangement, and Ring-Closing Metathesis (RCM).sis (RCM).
