  • In the low cycle fatigue fracture testing with KS(or JIS) SS41, crack growth rate, AE count rate and J-integral range are measured to get empirical relations between crack growth rate and J-integral range, AE count rate and J-integral range as well as AE count rate and crack growth rate. All the relations are shown to be linear on the log-log graphs. It is also shown that the linear relations can be formulated by using Dunegan's assumption and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics along with the well-known relation of crack growth rate and J-integral range. It is concluded that the differences between experimental and theoretical values are due to Dunegan's assumption.

  • An on-line monitoring system of endmill failure such as weal, chipping, and fracture is developed using AE, cutting force Characteristic variations of AE and cutting force signals due to endmill failure are identified as follows. When endmill fracture occurs, AE count rate shows a rapid Increase in conjunction with a subsequent decrease while a standard deviation of the principal cutting force Increases significantly. The increase of AE count rate precedes the Increase of standard deviation of principal cutting force. Chipping results in relatively small increase and decrease of AE count rate without any significant variation of the cutting force Gradual increase of AE count rate and mean principal cutting force are Identified to be related with the wear of cutter. A cutter fracture detection algorithm is developed based on the present results. The signals me normalized to enhance the applicability of the algorithm to Wide those of fresh cutters, and qualitative characteristics of AE signals encountered at the moment of fracture are employed. It is demonstrated that the algorithm can detect the cutter fracture successfully.

  • Characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditions, tool materials, and tool geometry in metal cutting. Relation between AE signal and tool wear was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by interrupted cutting for SCM420 workpiece with TiN coating tool on HSS material. AE RMS voltage and count per event were increased according to tool wear. The major results are as follows : 1) AE RMS value is nearly constant as cutting speed changes, but is rapidly increase as feed rate increases. 2) AE RMS value and Count per Event increase as tool wear increases. 3) It is more effective to monitor tool wear by Incremental rate of AE RMS value than by Incremental rate of count per event.

  • This paper deals with the possibility of tap breakage detection by AE sensor. AE signals in the tapping were not seldom generated in low speed but reflected the tapping process exactly in high speed. Using AE raw signals sampled in 500kHz, AE RMS and AE count rate was computed in software. When the converting time of AE RMS is less than 10ms, we could distinguish between normal cutting and tap breakage. And AE count rate was more exact when the converting time is greater than 1ms. When two methods were compared to each other, AE count rate was more accurate.

  • This paper describes the relationship between the bending strength properties of sloped finger-jointed woods and the acoustic emissions(AEs) generated during the test. Rhus verniciflua pieces were cut in sloped-finger types and glued with three kinds of adhesives(polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl acetate and oilic urethane resin). The slope ratios of finger joints were 0, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. The AE cumulative event count and cumulative count were measured during the bending test. The results were as follows: The lower the bending strength(load) was, the generation time of AE event count got and the higher the increasing rate of AE event count became in the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl acetate oilic urethane resin adhesives. Therefore, the slope from load-AE cumulative event count was very steep. The patterns of AE event count and count were very similar. The relationship between the MOR and the AE parameter from load and AE cumulatve event count in the early stage of the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-acryl and oilic urethane resin adhesives was much greater than that between the MOE and the MOR. Therefore, the AE signals obtained during bending test are useful for estimating the strength of sloped finger-jointed Rhus verniciflua specimens.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) of a high strength steel (SCM-4) was measured under stress corrosion cracking(SCC) test at a constant displacement in 3.5% artificial NaCl solution of 18.deg.C, 45.deg.C and 60.deg.C, respectively. The results are as follows; During the SCC test, AE is detected and AE count rate is approximately proportional to the crack growth rate. Even though crack is not propagated macroscopically, AE is detected. The crack growth rate of SCC and the AE count rate are higher for the solution of higher temperature, 45.deg.C and 60.deg.C, than for the solution of lower temperature, 18.deg.C. In the early stage of SCC, AE total counts mostly depend on crack growth. In the later stage, however, AE mostly depends on the film fracture and the dissolution of anode.

  • This paper describes the relationship between the bending strength properties of sloped finger-jointed woods and the acoustic emissions (AEs) generated during the test. Pinus densiflora pieces were cut in sloped-finger types and glued with four kinds of adhesives (polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl-aeryl, oilic urethane and resorcinol-phenol resin). The results were as follows: The lower the bending strength(load) was, the earlier the generation time of AE event count got and the higher the increasing rate of AE event count became in the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate and oilic urethane resin adhesives. Therefore, the slope from load-AE cumulative event count curve was very steep. The AE event count for resorcinol-phenol resin adhesive obtained even from low load level was abundant. The AE event count continuously increased as load increased and the event count was much more than one in the other conditions. The slope from load-AE cumulative event count curve was very gentle compared with other conditions. The patterns of AE event count and count were very similar. The relationship between the MOR and the AE parameter from load and AE cumulative event count in the early stage of the sloped finger-jointed specimens bonded with polyvinyl acetate, oilic urethane and resorcinol-phenol resin adhesives was much greater than that between the MOE and the MOR. Therefore, the AE signals obtained during bending test are useful for estimating the strength of sloped finger-jointed specimens.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the grade of WA vitrified and resinoid bond grinding wheels by the sue of AE measuring system. When the manufactured 48 kinds of specimens were scratched by the method of OKOSHI'S grade test, the relationship between the amount of bit scratch depth of grinding wheel specimens and the character- istics of AE signals, and the relationship of AE counts and grade were considered as fololws; (1) The higher the grades are AE cumlulative event counts N and AE event count rate n, the smaller the values tend to be. But A $E_{rms}$is in reverse. (2) In the case of same grade, the smaller the grain size is, the higher the value of AE cumulative event counts N and A $E_{rms}$is results of comparison and observation. The grinding wheel with lower elasticity and with higher percentage of pore detected higher value of AE cumula- tive event counts N than with higher elasticity and lower percentage of pore. But A $E_{rms}$ is in reverse. (3) AE cumulative event counts N and bit scratch depth h have normally one to one correspondence. (4) It can be expected that quantitative evaluations of grade by using AE have been carried out by the wave observation of AE signal in line with the relationship between load speed of bit and AE cumulative event counts N & AE event count rate n.' AE event count rate n.ate n.

  • Using the CT specimen of carbon steel(SM45C), we estimated the fatigue crack propagation behavior in stable crack propagation range. Furthermore the fatigue crack propagation rate, Acoustic Emission(AE) count rate, and fractography characteristics were also compared among others. The following results were confirmed by experimental observation. Near-threshold stress intensity factor range(.DELTA. $K_{th}$) is influenced by stress ratio but not at the upper limit of stable crack propagation range. As stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) and(or) stress amplitude increase (s), both crack propagation rate(da/dN) and AE count rate(dn/dN) increase. Effective stress intensity factor range(.DELTA. $K_{off}$) determined from the crack closure point measurement by AE method is useful for the evaluation of fatigue crack propagation rate. Fractography in stable crack propagation range showed striation, and agreed with the crack propagation rate obtained either by experiment of by the results of microscopic measurements.s.
