  • This paper presents the result of an investigation on the application of the acoustic emission method to the monitoring of fatigue crack initiation, growth and track location in welded joints. Fatigue test was carried out for a typical fillet welded joint of ship structure. AE parameter such as ring down count was analyzed in time domain and crack locations were examined by source location and cluster option which is one of the functions of AE signal processor The usability of AE mettled was confirmed for the detection of the initiation and location of through crack.

  • Kaiser effects of thermo-acoustic emission (AE) from composite laminates under the repetitive thermal cyclic loads have been quantitatively analyzed in consideration of AE source mechanisms. The repetitive thermal load brought about a large reduction. i.e. an exponential decrease in AE total ringdown counts and AE amplitudes. It was thought that generation of thermo-AE during the first thermal cycle was not caused by crack propagation but by secondary microfracturing due to abrasive contact between crack surfaces. For the repetitive thermal cycles, a few number of weak thermo-AE events were generated due to some frictional sliding contact. Such behavior of thermo-AE showed different characteristics according to specimen kinds and the maximum temperature in the thermal load cycles.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signal was detected during charge and discharge of lithium ion battery to investigate relationships among cumulative count, discharge capacity, and microdamages. AE signal was received during accelerated charge/discharge cycle test of a coin-type commercial battery. A number of AE signals were successfully detected during charge and discharge, respectively. With increasing number of cycle, discharge capacity was decreased and AE cumulative count was observed to increase. Microstructural observation of the decomposed battery after cycle test revealed mechanical damages such as interface delamination and microcracking of the electrodes. These damages were attributed to sources of the detected AE signals. Based on a linear correlation between discharge capacity and cumulative count, feasibility of AE technique for evaluation of battery degradation was suggested.

  • Rotary Compressor has many AE(Acoustic Emission) sources according to condition of parts because it is operated with combination of various parts. In this study, analysis of AE raw signal generated form Rotary compressor which artificially-made parts inflicted abnormal condition was carried out. AE raw signals were acquired form high-speed A/D board, and many burst type signals were observed. By analyzing burst type signals which is caused form internal AE source, efficient AE parameters for monitoring and diagnosis were presented.

  • Characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditions, tool materials, and tool geometry in metal cutting. Relation between AE signal and tool wear was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by interrupted cutting for SCM420 workpiece with TiN coating tool on HSS material. AE RMS voltage and count per event were increased according to tool wear. The major results are as follows : 1) AE RMS value is nearly constant as cutting speed changes, but is rapidly increase as feed rate increases. 2) AE RMS value and Count per Event increase as tool wear increases. 3) It is more effective to monitor tool wear by Incremental rate of AE RMS value than by Incremental rate of count per event.

  • Under the AE methods, the valid condition analysis and evaluation the leak etc, resulted by the AE signal pattern on the bottom plate of ground tank at full. In next more, the gradient of accumulation amplitude distribution analysis and comparison the energy, count, and duration time that noise of EMI signal were removed. EMI signal showed height-energy, count, and duration time, it also appeared great gradient of accumulation distribution. Then, with the pure remaining AE signals cluster analysis and location. It would possibly assume of damage with corrosion. Total cluster 20 and energy showed between the maximum 11,990 and 8,565 which is much lower than above figure and event number showed from 8 to 5. Even when it difficult to certify damage by open, as it is raised higher height-sensitivity and threshold by 60 dB. It would possibly presume of location source more accurately.

  • AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is correlated to workpiece material, cutting conditions and tool geometry during metal cutting. The relationship between AE signal and cutting parameters can be obtained by theoretical model and experiments. The value of CR(Count Rate) is nearly constant in stable cutting, but when the chatter vibration occours, the value of CR is rapidly increased due to the vibration deformation zone. By experimental signal processing of AE, it is more effective than by RMS(Root Mean Square) measurement to detect the threshold of chatter vibration by CR measurement.

  • An on-line monitoring system of endmill failure such as weal, chipping, and fracture is developed using AE, cutting force Characteristic variations of AE and cutting force signals due to endmill failure are identified as follows. When endmill fracture occurs, AE count rate shows a rapid Increase in conjunction with a subsequent decrease while a standard deviation of the principal cutting force Increases significantly. The increase of AE count rate precedes the Increase of standard deviation of principal cutting force. Chipping results in relatively small increase and decrease of AE count rate without any significant variation of the cutting force Gradual increase of AE count rate and mean principal cutting force are Identified to be related with the wear of cutter. A cutter fracture detection algorithm is developed based on the present results. The signals me normalized to enhance the applicability of the algorithm to Wide those of fresh cutters, and qualitative characteristics of AE signals encountered at the moment of fracture are employed. It is demonstrated that the algorithm can detect the cutter fracture successfully.

  • The compressor is one of important elements in refrigerator cycle and play an important role of refrigeration efficiency and quality. Therefore it is very important to monitor state of normal and abnormal compressor. In this research, technic of AE is used for monitoring abnormal rotary compressor and an AE parameter which is a most proper parameter to monitor the abnormal state of compressor is determined by signal processing, Finally, the monitoring result of rotary compressor is agreement with the result of life test.

  • In this work, corrosion of 304 stainless steel was evaluated by using acoustic emission(AE) technique. AE measurement system was set for detecting acoustic signal during accelerated corrosion test of the specimen. AE signal started to be detected after the time of pitting corrosion initiation was evaluated by anodic polarization curve. Pitting corrosion damage was confirmed by optical microscopic observation of the surface morphology. AE cumulative counts and amplitude according to corrosion time could be divided into three stages. These trends were discussed in relation with changing pitting corrosion mechanism. Feasibilities of AE technique for evaluation of corrosion damage and mechanism were suggested.
