  • Red scabream, Pagrus major , is a valuable aquaculture species in Korea , but spontaneous eye abnormality occurred in cultured individuals . The incidence of eye abnormality was 4% in the group of cultured red scebream. The abnormality was characterized by unilateral and bilateral exophthalmos, opacity and lens pathology. Lense prolapse was found in two cases. Lenses in diseased fishes was considerably small in diameter and eyes were deformed as a whole. In the group of induced hybrid red scabream Pagrus major (♀) x black seabrearn Acanthopagrus schlegeli (♂), the incidence of eye abnormality wa~ the same 4%, but only opacity was registered. Opacity was also found in two of sixteen examined Wild-caught red seabrcam. Histopathological changes of lenses in cultured red seabreem included vecuolated cytoplasm of lens fibers, necrosis of fibers in central part of lens, folding and increase in thickness of lens capsule, and epithelial proliferation beneath the anterior lens capsule. In affected eyes no parasites or gas bubbles were found.

  • In this paper, the time history of the surface elevation measured at the Draupner platform in the North Sea in 1995 is used to examine the statistical characteristics of the wave data. The wave statistics for 48 surface measurements, which contain three freak wave occurrences, are summarized. The quartiles, boxplots, correlations, and pair plots of 15 variables, along with the abnormality index, are presented. The kurtosis and skewness of the surface elevation are two variables that are highly correlated with the abnormality index, which defines freak waves. Principal coordinate analysis showed that the direction of the changes in the abnormality index agreed with the changes in the kurtosis and skewness. In addition, various wave heights, except the maximum wave height, showed a similar direction for the height changes, and various wave periods showed a similar direction for the period changes. Based on the correlations and PCA analysis, the kurtosis and skewness of the surface profiles are the two most important variables to predict the abnormality index.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the association of work posture with cervical spine abnormality toward 106 microwave-oven assemblers. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain a general characteristics and a work history of workers. The posture of neck and shoulder joint of workers were measured with video tape recording and the simple X-ray of cervical spine was checked-up to observe the X-ray abnormality including degenerative change, curvature abnormality, disc space narrowing or disc canal narrowing. The result were as follows. 1. The prevalence of degenerative change among cervicobrachial disorder workers was 44.3% (47 persons), curvature abnormality was 43.4%(46 persons), disc space narrowing was 21.7%(23 persons), and disc canal narrowing was 21.7%(23 persons). 2. The prevalence of degenerative change at cervical spine was increased with the degree of neck flexion(flexed versus neutral, odds ratio [OR]=2.7), the total work posture of neck(mild or severe awkward versus neutral ; OR=1.2, 3.4). 3. The prevalence of degenerative change at cervical spine was increased with the degree of the right shoulder flexion, the heaviness of the materials carried by the right hand and the degree of awkwardness at the total work posture of right shoulder(p<0.05). 4. There was no evidence of association between curvature abnormality, disc space narrowing, disc canal narrowing and work posture. In conclusion the awkward work posture was related with degenerative change of cervical spine among microwave oven assembling workers and the further study in these field must be made to prove the association objectively.

  • Objective: Artificial intelligence-based computer-aided diagnosis (AI-CAD) is increasingly used in mammography. While the continuous scores of AI-CAD have been related to malignancy risk, the understanding of how to interpret and apply these scores remains limited. We investigated the positive predictive values (PPVs) of the abnormality scores generated by a deep learning-based commercial AI-CAD system and analyzed them in relation to clinical and radiological findings. Materials and Methods: From March 2020 to May 2022, 656 breasts from 599 women (mean age 52.6 ± 11.5 years, including 0.6% [4/599] high-risk women) who underwent mammography and received positive AI-CAD results (Lunit Insight MMG, abnormality score ≥ 10) were retrospectively included in this study. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to evaluate the associations between the AI-CAD abnormality scores and clinical and radiological factors. The breasts were subdivided according to the abnormality scores into groups 1 (10-49), 2 (50-69), 3 (70-89), and 4 (90-100) using the optimal binning method. The PPVs were calculated for all breasts and subgroups. Results: Diagnostic indications and positive imaging findings by radiologists were associated with higher abnormality scores in the multivariable regression analysis. The overall PPV of AI-CAD was 32.5% (213/656) for all breasts, including 213 breast cancers, 129 breasts with benign biopsy results, and 314 breasts with benign outcomes in the follow-up or diagnostic studies. In the screening mammography subgroup, the PPVs were 18.6% (58/312) overall and 5.1% (12/235), 29.0% (9/31), 57.9% (11/19), and 96.3% (26/27) for score groups 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The PPVs were significantly higher in women with diagnostic indications (45.1% [155/344]), palpability (51.9% [149/287]), fatty breasts (61.2% [60/98]), and certain imaging findings (masses with or without calcifications and distortion). Conclusion: PPV increased with increasing AI-CAD abnormality scores. The PPVs of AI-CAD satisfied the acceptable PPV range according to Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System for screening mammography and were higher for diagnostic mammography.

  • To demonstrate the clinical usefulness of electroencephalography (EEG) and factors increasing the usefulness of EEG, the authors evaluated each relationship between EEG related factors and clinical variables, and neuroimaging studies (CT and MRI)-related factors, and factors which are related with routine neurological examination for 207 patients who had been evaluated with both of EEG and neuroimaging study(CT or/and MRI). The results were as follows: 1) Abnormality of EEG findings had significant relationships with chief complaints, diagnosis, medication use, seizure attack, pathological reflex, and level of consciousness. However there were no significant correlations between abnormality of EEG findings and neuroimaging studies (CT and MRI)- related factors. 2) Laterality of EEG findings had significant relationships with abnormality, laterality, and focality of CT findings, and also with abnormality of MRI findings. But there were no significant correlations between laterality of EEG findings and clinical variables, and neurological examination-related factors. 3) Anterior-posterior distribution of EEG findings was significantly related with medication use. 4) Focality of EEG findings had significant relationships with sex, sensory dysfunction sign, and cerebellar dysfunction sign. But there were no significant correlations between focality of EEG findings and neuroimaging studies(CT and MRI) related factors. 5) Abnormal EEG pattern had significant correlations with various factors, such as age, chief complaints, duration from onset of symptom to taking MRI, seizure attack, abnormality and nature of lesion in CT findings, cortical atrophy in MRI findings, motor dysfunction sign, sensory dysfunction sign, and pathological reflex. 6) With abnormality on sleep activation, age, age of onset, seizure attack, ventricular enlargement in CT findings, and abnormality of MRI findings were significantly correlated. 7) With abnormality on hyperventilation activation, duration of illness and laterality of MRI findings were significantly correlated. Above results may suggest that abnormality of EEG findings is more closely related with functional change of the brain than structural changes of the brain and laterality of EEG findings is vice versa. And also that medication use has an influence on anterior versus posterior distribution of EEG findings and focality of EEG findings is not related with structural changes of the brain. Activation with sleep may be effective to show age differences and provocation of seizure activity and hyperventilation may be effective to detect the abnormal EEG findings by cerebrovascular insufficiency.

  • Morphological and anatomical evaluation of grafted P. merkusii have been undertaken to obtain the information about compatible and incompatible symptoms of 18 years old grafts based on morphological observation and microscopic analysis. Samples of compatible and incompatible grafts were obtained from previous research conducted by the Silviculture Departement Team in 1994. Result showed that compatible grafts have normal stem form and secondary growth (diameter growth), but some abnormality symptoms like undulated pattern of annual growth rings, phloem thickening and abnormality resin ducts in inner and middle parts of the union area occurred. Incompatible ones showed abnormality of the stem form, cortex-bark necrosis and swelling in the union area. Microscopic observation showed abnormality of all parts of the union, undulated pattern of annual growth rings, phloem thickening, abnormal resin ducts, low numbers and discontinuity of vascular elements in the union area.

  • Many studies have been conducted to search for the anatomical abnormalities in the brain which ore etiologically related with schizophrenia. Generally schizophrenia in known to be related with decreased brain tissue, hypofrontality and abnormalities in the temporal lobe including the hippocamypus, the agmygdala and the entorhinal cortex. Other areas related with the disorder ore basal ganglia, thalamus, brain stem, pons and nucleus accumbens. Abnormality in brain asymmetry is one of the new areas of interest which needs further study. The results so for ore inconsistent and it is unlikely that the abnormality in one structure is the only cause of the disorder. Rather, schizophrenia develops from the impairment of the parallel processing of integrated and reciprocal information which is distributed to the multiple structures. Histopathologic studies in the postmortem brain suggest that schizophrenia is related with neurodevelopmental abnormality rather than neurodegenerative abnormality.
