There are many railway structures which were designed without conidering aseismic capacity. In special, masonry structures constructed long time ago should be reviewed about their resistance to earthquake. In this paper, technique to evaluate the capacity of masonry railway bridge is tried to develop by means of FEM analysis. In general FEM analysis program, 3-D solid element is used for masonry structures and response spectrum analysis procedure is tried. In addition, 3-D solid element has material properties equivalent to mortar-brick composite body. Used FEM program is ABAQUS-CAE.

The life of components under high thermal load is typically shorter than other components. The turbopump turbine of liquid rocket is operated under these environments like high temperature and high centrifugal dorce due to high rotating velocity during operating time. These conditions may often cause low-cycle fatigue problem in the turbopump turbine. First of all, to analyze heat stress, ABAQUS/CAE is used and Coffin-manson's equation is used to consider elasticity and plasticity strain. S.W.T's method is used to consider the mean stress effect, using strain history, low-cycle fatigue analysis is done for turbopump turbine which may have FCL(fracture critical location). In this paper, strain life method is applied to analyze low-cycle fatigue.

The life of a component decreases when it was exposed at the extreme condition. A turbine blade of a turbopump used for a liquid rocket engine is operated under the environment of high temperature and pressure, and experienced high centrifugal force. Thus the durability of the turbopump operated under the these conditions become lower than expected because of the severe fatigue and creep influence. The damage of the turbine being considered the fatigue and the creep influence is estimated to ensure the durability of turbopump turbine. ABAQUS/CAE and MSC.Fatigue are used for the fatigue analysis, and Larson-Miller parameter and robinson's rule are used for the creep analysis. In this paper, comparison and analysis of the fatigue and the creep influence were performed to ensure the life expectancy of turbopump turbine.

The interlayers, either softer or stiffer than the surrounding layers, are usually overlooked during field investigation due to the small thickness. They may be neglected through the analysis process for simplicity. However, they may significantly affect the dynamic behavior of the soil-foundation system. In this study, a series of 3D finite-element Direct-solution steady-state harmonic analyses were carried out using ABAQUS/CAE software to investigate the impacts of interlayers on the dynamic response of a cast in place pile group subjected to horizontal harmonic load. The experimental data of a 3×2 pile group testing was used to verify the numerical modeling. The effects of thickness, depth, and shear modulus of the interlayers on the dynamic response of the pile group are investigated. The simulations were conducted on both stiff and soft soils. It was found that the soft interlayers affect the frequency-amplitude curve of the system only in frequencies higher than 70% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. While, the effect of stiff interlayer in soft base soil started at frequency of 35% of the resonant frequency of the base soil. Also, it was observed that a shallow stiff interlayer increased the resonant amplitude by 11%, while a deep one only increased the resonant frequency by 7%. Moreover, a shallow soft interlayer increased the resonant frequency by 20% in soft base soils, whereas, it had an effect as low as 6% on resonant amplitude. Also, the results showed that deep soft interlayers increased the resonant amplitude by 17 to 20% in both soft and stiff base soils due to a reduction in lateral support of the piles. In the cases of deep thick, soft interlayers, the resonant frequency reduced significantly, i.e., 16 to 20%. It was found that the stiff interlayers were most effective on the amplitude and frequency of the pile group.
In this study, the behavior of the number of anchorage bolts on the glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) plates adhered to the surfaces of reinforcing concrete (RC) T-beams was investigated analytically. The analytical results were compared to the test results in term of shear strength, and midpoint displacement of the beam. The modelling of the beams was conducted in ABAQUS/CAE finite element software. The Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) model was used for concrete material modeling, and Classical Metal Plasticity (CMP) model was used for reinforcement material modelling. Model-1 was the reference specimen with enough sufficient shear reinforcement, and Model-2 was the reference specimen having low shear reinforcement. Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5 were the specimens with lower shear reinforcement. These models consist of a single variable which was the number of anchorage bolts implemented to the GFRP plates. The anchorage bolts of 2, 3, and 4 were mutually mounted on each GFRP plates through the beam surfaces for Model-3, Model-4, and Model-5, respectively. It was found that Model-1, Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5 provided results approximately equal to the test results. The results show that the shear strength of the beams increased with increasing of anchorage numbers. While close results were obtained for Model-1, Model-3, Model-4 and Model-5, in Model-2, the rate of increase of displacement was higher than the increase of load rate. It was seen, finite element based ABAQUS program is inadequate in the modeling of the reinforced concrete specimens under shear force.
This paper covers finite element simulations to evaluate the terminal crimping process of automobile electrical connector. Crimping is a classical technology process to ensure the electrical and the mechanical link between a wire and a terminal. Numerical modeling of the process is helpful to choose and to optimize the dimensions of the crimping part of the connector. In this paper, we discuss a 2D simulation of the crimping process, using explicit finite element methods (ABAQUS/Explicit) and we compare the results with experimental data from the industrial process of crimping (crimping height, crimping width and compressibility). The explicit method is preferred for the modeling of multi-contact problems, in spite of the quasi-static process of crimping. As compared with CAE analysis, a performance improvement makes certain of the truth of the matter.
The present article showcases a temperature dependent cohesive zone model (CZM)-based fi nite element simulation of drop weight tear test (DWTT), to analyse fracture behavior of pipeline steel (PS) at different temperatures. By co-relating the key CZM parameters with known mechanical properties of PS at varying temperature, a temperature dependent CZM for PS is proposed. A modified form of Johnson and Cook model has been used for the true stress-strain behavior of PS. The numerical model, using Abaqus/CAE 6.13, has been validated by comparing the predicted results with load-displacement curves obtained from test data. During steady-state crack propagation, toughness parameters (such as CTOA and CTOD) were found to remain fairly constant at a given temperature. These toughness parameters, however, show an exponential increase with increase in temperature. The present paper offers a plausible approach to numerically analyze fracture behavior of PS at varying temperature using a temperature dependent CZM.
A novel impact localization method is presented based on impact induced elastic waves in sensorized composite structure subjected to temperature fluctuations. In real practices, environmental and operational conditions influence the acquired signals and consequently make the feature (particularly Time of Arrival (TOA)) extraction process, complicated and troublesome. To overcome this complication, a robust TOA estimation method is proposed based on the times in which the absolute amplitude of the signal reaches to a specific amplitude value. The presented method requires prior knowledge about the normalized wave velocity in different directions of propagation. To this aim, a finite element model of the plate was built in ABAQUS/CAE. The impact location is then highlighted by calculating an error value at different points of the structure. The efficiency of the developed impact localization technique is experimentally evaluated by dropping steel balls with different energies on a carbon fiber composite plate with different temperatures. It is demonstrated that the developed technique is able to localize impacts with different energies even in the presence of noise and temperature fluctuations.

In this paper, we introduce a new framework for running the finite element (FE) packages inside an online Loop together with MATLAB. Contrary to the Hardware-in-the-Loop techniques (HiL), in the proposed Software-in-the-Loop framework (SiL), the FE package represents a simulation platform replicating the real system which can be out of access due to several strategic reasons, e.g., costs and accessibility. Practically, SiL for sophisticated structural design and multi-physical simulations provides a platform for preliminary tests before prototyping and mass production. This feature may reduce the new product's costs significantly and may add several flexibilities in implementing different instruments with the goal of shortlisting the most cost-effective ones before moving to real-time experiments for the civil and mechanical systems. The proposed SiL interconnection is not limited to ABAQUS as long as the host FE package is capable of executing user-defined commands in FORTRAN language. The focal point of this research is on using the compiled FORTRAN subroutine as a messenger between ABAQUS/CAE kernel and MATLAB Engine. In order to show the generality of the proposed scheme, the limitations of the available SiL schemes in the literature are addressed in this paper. Additionally, all technical details for establishing the connection between FEM and MATLAB are provided for the interested reader. Finally, two numerical sub-problems are defined for offline and online post-processing, i.e., offline optimization and closed-loop system performance analysis in control theory.

Material non-linearity of Reinforced Concrete (RC) framed structures is studied by modelling concrete using the Concrete Damage Plasticity (CDP) theory. The stress-strain data of concrete in compression is modelled using the Hsu model. The structures are analyzed using a finite element approach by modelling them in ABAQUS / CAE. Single bay single storey RC frames, designed according to Indian Standard (IS):456:2000 and IS:13920:2016 are considered for assessing their maximum load carrying capacity and failure behavior under the influence of gravity loads and lateral loads. It is found that the CDP model is effective in predicting the failure behaviors of RC frame structures. Under the influence of the lateral load, the structure designed according to IS:13920 had a higher load carrying capacity when compared with the structure designed according to IS:456. Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) strip is used for strengthening the columns and beam column joints of the RC frame individually against lateral loads. 10mm and 20mm thick strips are adopted for the numerical simulation of RC column and beam-column joint. Results obtained from the study indicated that UHPFRC with two different thickness strips acts as a very good strengthening material in increasing the load carrying capacity of columns and beam-column joint by more than 5%. UHPFRC also improved the performance of the RC frames against lateral loads with an increase of more than 3.5% with the two different strips adopted. 20 mm thick strip is found to be an ideal size to enhance the load carrying capacity of the columns and beam-column joints. Among the strengthening locations adopted in the study, column strengthening is found to be more efficient when compared with the beam column joint strengthening.
