  • The hot tear susceptibility of Al alloys was investigated by using a constrained-rod mold designed to quantify 8 types of tear tendency. The severity of the crack was scored by 5 grades on a scale of 0 to 4, with 0 being "no crack formed" and 4 being "complete separation by crack". The Hot Tear Susceptibility index (HTS) which consists of crack type scores and position scores, was proposed to compare the hot tear tendency of Al alloys. A356.0 cast alloy and AA6061 wrought Al alloy showed an HTS value of 27.5 and 53 respectively. The effects of Si, Cu, and Mg content on hot tear tendency were also investigated with a constrained-rod mold. The variation of HTS values with alloying elements represents similar behavior in the variation of the solidification range in a pseudo binary phase diagram.

  • The yoke, a component of conventional motor-driven power steering system, often contains welding defects from its manufacturing process. To eliminate these defects, the precision cold forging process has been tried. In this study, the double-action complex forging has been used to manufacture a torsion joint yoke. The backward extrusion proved faster than the forward extrusion in forging of the product. The double-action complex forging process utilized an upper die composed of a punch, a punch guide, a disc spring and a coil spring. The forged material pushes up the punch guide, and then the disc spring and the coil spring balances the backward extrusion force. Consequently, the flow of material was essentially in the forward direction, resulting in a successful forging operation. The forging load of Al 6061-T6 was higher than that of the automotive structural hot rolled plate.

  • Wall thinning can be classified into three types: flow-accelerated corrosion, cavitation erosion and solid particle erosion. This article presents a study of solid particle erosion, which frequently causes damages to power plants' pipe system. Unlike previous studies, this study uses a mechanism to make solid particles in a fluid flow collide with pipe materials in underwater condition. Experiment is conducted in three cases of velocity according to solid-water ratio using the three types of the materials of A106B, SS400, and A6061. The experiments were performed for 30 days, and the surface morphology and hardness of the materials were examined for every 7 days. Based on the velocity change of the solid particles in a fluid flow, the surface changes, the change in the amount of erosion, the erosion rate and the variation in the hardness of carbon steel and aluminum family pipe materials can all be determined. In addition, factor-based erosion rates are verified and a wall-thinning relation function is suggested for the pipe materials.

  • A complete quantitative understanding of DT has been difficult because the process represents such a broad field of research. The experimental measurement of tool force is a single area of DT which still covers a wide range of possibilities. There are numerous parameters of the process which affect cutting forces. There are also many turnable materials of current interest. To obtain information toward a better understanding of the process, a few cutting parameters and materials were selected for detail study. It was decided that free-oxygen copper and 6061-T6 alloy aluminum would be the primary test materials. There are materials which other workers have also used because of there wide use in reflective applications. The experimental phase of the research project began by designing tests to isolate certain cutting parameters. The parameters chosen to study were those that affected the cross-sectional area of the uncut chip. The specific parameters which cause this area to vary are the depth of cut and infeed per revolution, or feedrates. Other parameter such a tool nose radius and surface roughness were investigated as they became relevant to the research.

  • The low speed aerodynamic characteristics for a modified sonic arc airfoil which is designed by using the nose shape function of sonic arc, the shape function of NACA four-digit wing sections, and Maple are experimentally investigated. The small rotor blades of a modified sonic arc and NACA0012 airfoil are precisely fabricated with a commercially available light aluminum(Al 6061-T6) and are spin tested over a low speed range (3000rpm-5000rpm). In a consuming power comparison, the consuming powers of NACA0012 are higher than that of modified sonic arcs at each pitch angle. The measured rotor thrust for each pitch angle is used to estimate the rotor thrust coefficient according to momentum theory in the hover state. The value of thrust coefficients for both two airfoils at each pitch angle show almost constant values over the low Mach number range. However, the rotor thrust coefficient of NACA0012 is higher than that of the modified sonic arc at each pitch angle. In conclusion, the aerodynamic performance of NACA0012 is better than that of modified sonic arcs in the low speed regime. This test model will provide a convenient platform for improving the aerodynamic performance of small scale airfoils and for performing design optimization studies.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the change in tensile strength characteristics of the weld when the welding speed and rotational speed of the tool, which are representative variables of the friction stir welding process. The equipment used in the experiment was Machining Center No. 5. The material used in the experiment is an AA6061-T6 alloy, and a rolled plate with a thickness of 2mm was used. Two experimental variables were selected, the welding speed of the tool and the rotational speed of the tool. The experimental conditions were selected in the range in which a healthy weld could be obtained through a preliminary experiment. The welding speed of the tool was increased to 100mm/min, 200mm/min, and 300mm/min, and the rotational speed of the tool was increased to 1000rpm, 2000rpm, and 3000rpm. As a result of the experiment, the tensile strength increased as the rotational speed of the tool changed at each tool welding speed. In addition, as the welding speed of the tool increased, the tensile strength of the weld was increased. The condition with the highest tensile strength of the weld was found to be a tool feed speed of 300 mm/min and a tool rotation speed of 3000rpm.

  • Physical properties of Plasma electrolytic oxidized 8 different types of Al alloys, A-1100, A-2024, A-5052, A-6061, A-6063, A-7075, ACD-7B and ACD-12 were investigated. The electrolyte for PEO was $Na_2SiO_3$ solutions with NaOH and some alkali earthen metal salts. Porous layer near the surface of PEO coating was not found, and surface roughness Ra50 was below 2.5 ${\mu}m$. Surface roughness was affected by growth rate of plasma electrolytic oxidized layer, not by Si content in Al alloy.

  • Fatigue crack growth behavior of inclined cracked Al 6061-T6 thick aluminum plate(6mm) repaired with the bonded composite patch was studied. A 0°inclined crack bonded reinforced composite patch and 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°inclined crack plates were tested. The effect of patch and inclined angle were studied and compared to each other. Also we investigated to the crack propagation direction and debonding behavior during the fatigue crack growth test. In this paper. a study was con(ducted to get an fatigue life, fatigue crack growth ratio and crack growth direction. Finally, the effectiveness of composite patch on inclined cracked plate was investigated. The results demonstrated thats there was a definite variation in fatigue life and fatigue crack growth behavior depending on the inclined crack angle.

  • Mechanical fastening is still one of the main methods used for joining components. Different techniques have been applied to reduce the effect of stress concentration of notches like fastener holes. In this work we evaluate the feasibility of combining laser shock peening (LSP) and cold expansion to improve fatigue crack initiation and propagation of open hole specimens made of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. LSP is a new and competitive technique for strengthening metals, and like cold expansion, induces a compressive residual stress field that improves fatigue, wear and corrosion resistance. For LSP treatment, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with infrared radiation was used. Residual stress distribution as a function of depth was determined by the contour method. Compact tension specimens with a hole at the notch tip were subjected to LSP process and cold expansion and then tested under cyclic loading with R=0.1 generating fatigue cracks on the hole surface. Fatigue crack initiation and growth is analyzed and associated with the residual stress distribution generated by both treatments. It is observed that both methods are complementary; cold expansion increases fatigue crack initiation life, while LSP reduces fatigue crack growth rate.
