  • In this study, bronze or SUS304 powders blended with 10 wt.% diamond particles were used to prepare metal/diamond composite materials deposited by cold spraying. The effects of matrix metal, diamond partical size, and the thickness of the Ni coating on the diamond were studied on Al 6061 substrate. The results showed that the hardness of the metal/diamond composite coating layers was higher than that of the same composite materials when using the sintering method. The fraction of diamond content in the coated layer increased when the metal matrix was soft. When the size of the diamond particles was reduced, the fraction of the diamond particles increased. In addition, in the case of diamond with a thicker Ni-coated layer, the fracturing of diamonds was mitigated in the composite coating layers.

  • In aluminum sheet metal forming, the conventional forming methods of T4 or T6 heat-treated sheets result in low formability and dimensional accuracy. This study suggests a new forming method for aluminum sheets called as hot forming quenching (HFQ) that solves the problems faced in the conventional method. HFQ combines the heat treatment and forming processes through the forming die during the quenching of a solid solution. To evaluate the application of HFQ to the sheet forming of aluminum, an Erichsen and V-bending test are performed in this study to measure the dimensional accuracy and formability, which are then compared with those of the conventional forming method. Furthermore, the strength and hardness of the products formed by HFQ are measured to confirm the degradation in mechanical properties compared with the conventional forming method, which shows the validity of the application of HFQ to aluminum sheet metal forming.

  • This study aims to develop a FE Model to simulate dissimilar friction stir welding and to address its potential for fundamental analysis and practical applications. The FE model is based on Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Multiphysics systems are calculated using explicit time integration algorithm, and heat generations by friction and inelastic heat conversion as well as heat transfer through the bottom surface are included. Using the developed model, friction stir welding between an Al6061T6 plate and an AZ61 plate were simulated. Three simulations are carried out varying the welding parameters. The model is capable of predicting the temperature and plastic strain fields and the distribution of void. The simulation results showed that temperature was generally greater in Mg plates and that, as a rotation speed increase, not the maximum temperature of Mg plate increased, but did the temperature of Al plate. In addition, the model could predict flash defects, however, the prediction of void near the welding tool was not satisfactory. Since the model includes the complex physics closely occurring during FSW, the model possibly analyze a lot of phenomena hard to discovered by experiments. However, practical applications may be limited due to huge simulation time.

  • Aluminum alloy was examined as a material of low weight reactor for hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$. Aluminum is dissolved with alkali, but there is NaOH as a stabilizer in $NaBH_4$ solution. To decrease corrosion rate of aluminum, decrease NaOH concentration and this result in loss of $NaBH_4$ during storage of $NaBH_4$ solution. Therefore stability of $NaBH_4$ and corrosion of aluminum should be considered in determining the optimum NaOH concentration. $NaBH_4$ stability and corrosion rate of aluminum were measured by hydrogen evolution rate. $NaBH_4$ stability was tested at $20{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ and aluminum corrosion was measured at $60{\sim}90^{\circ}C$. The optimum concentration of NaOH was 0.3 wt%, considering both $NaBH_4$ stability and aluminun corrosion. $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction continued 200min in aluminum No 6061 alloy reactor with 0.3 wt% NaOH at $80{\sim}90^{\circ}C$.

  • The importance of heat dissipation for the electric device modules along the thickness direction is increasing. Two types of two-layered materials, metal-metal bonding and dielectric-metal bonding, have been fabricated by roll bonding process and a thermal diffusivity of the specimens was measured along the thickness direction. The thermal diffusivity of specimens with metal-metal bonding measured by light flash analysis (LFA) showed a same value independent on the direction of heat flow. However, the thermal diffusivity of specimens with dielectric-metal bonding showed a big difference of 17.5% when the direction of heat flow changed oppositely in the LFA process. The measured thermal diffusivity of specimens when the heat flows from metal to dielectric direction showed smaller value of 17.5% compared to the value when the heat flow from dielectric to metal direction. The difference in thermal diffusivity of specimens with dielectric-metal bonding dependence on direction of heat flow is due to the electron-phonon resistance that occurred transfer process of electron energy to phonon energy near the interface.

  • Fiber metal hybrid laminate (FML) can be used as an economic material with superior mechanical properties and light weight than conventional metal by bonding of metal and FRP. However, there are disadvantages that it is difficult to predict fracture behavior because of the large difference in properties depending on the type of fiber and lamination conditions. In this paper, we study the failure behavior of hybrid materials with laminated glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, GEP118, woven type) in Al6061-T6 alloy. The Al alloys were coated with GFRP 1, 3, and 5 layers, and fracture behavior was analyzed by using a static test and a low cycle fatigue test. In the low cycle fatigue test, strain - life analysis and the total strain energy density method were used to analyze and predict the fatigue life. The Al alloy did not have tensile properties strengthening effect due to the GFRP coating. The fatigue hysteresis geometry followed the behavior of the Al alloy, the base material, regardless of the GFRP coating and number of coatings. As a result of the low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue strength was increased by the coating of GFRP, but it did not increase proportionally with the number of GFRP layers.

  • A finite element analysis for near-net-shape forming of A16061 powder was performed under warm rubber isostatic pressing and warm die pressing. The advantages of warm compaction by rubber isostatic pressing were discussed to obtain a part with better density distributions. The shape of rubber mold was designed by determining a cavity shape that provides a desired shape of the final powder compact. To simulate densification and deformed shape of a powder compact during pressing, the elastoplastic constitutive equation based on yield function of Shima-Oyane was implemented into a finite element program(ABAQUS). The hyperelastic constitutive equation based on the Ogden strain energy Potential was employed to analyze nonlinear elastic response of rubber. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for Al6061 powder compacts under warm die pressing and warm isostatic pressing.

  • PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at a wide range of temperatures and demonstrates a low friction coefficient value. PTFE is being used for self-lubricating parts in industry. But it shows a high wear rate. Thus, PTFE and nano-diamond powder were mixed into a composite and the wear properties of a PTFE coating layer on Al6061 was investigated. A ball-on-disk type of wear tester was used under a dry condition and different temperatures of oil. After the wear test, the wear track wasexamined by optical microscope. The PTFE-diamond showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.02) of all the lubricants in the experiments. The friction coefficient was shown to be directly related to the diamond powder in the PTFE coating. Adhesion estimations were performed by a scratch test, which is mainly used for coatings. The critical load between the coating and substrate was defined through analyses of the friction load, normal load curve, and acoustic emissions, along with optical microscope observations. The scratch test results showed that an import item (SWISS) gave the highest critical load values.
