Interspecific Hybridization between Triploid Hybrid Fish, Cobitis sinensis - longicorpus and Two Diploid Species from Korea (잡종 3배체 어류 기름종개 - 왕종개 잡종군의 종간 교잡실험)

  • Cobitis sinensis - longicorpus complex were commonly found in the upper stream of the Nakdong River in Korea and consisted of mostly with diploid and triploid karyotype forms. Among them, the triploid females of C. sinensis - longicorpus were artificially crossed with diploid males from C. sinensis and diploid males from C. longicorpus, respectively. The progenies from each cross produced the diploid individuals that possessed the paternal characters in their karyotypes and their body color patterns. Based on this results, we can assume that the triploid females, C. sinensis - longicorpus have a peculiar reproductive mode eliminating an uneven genome by the primary meiotic division and then producing a haploid ovum by secondary meiosis.

Clonorchis Sinensis Research Reported in Korea from 2001 to 2007 (간흡충 관련 국내 연구논문 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the trend of research on clonorchis sinensis in Korea. Method: The study design was a literature analysis in which research studies with 'Clonorchis' in the title were collected from 2001 to 2007. A total of 115 research studies were analyzed based on the year of publication, study design, major or institute of researcher, study sample, and research theme. Results: 10-19% of the research studies were published each year from 2001 to 2007. Experimental study design was the most frequent at 54.8%. Medicine or parasitology as the major of researchers were 43.2% and 41.2% retrospectively, but no nursing studies were found. For study samples, 65.9% were cyst larvae and animals, followed by human beings (29.5%). In research theme, the structure and gene analysis of clonorchis sinensis was the most frequent (32.1%), followed by animal experimental studies (15.7%), epidemic studies of clonorchis sinensis prevalence and changes (13.0%), and methods of diagnosis of clonorchis sinensis and effectiveness (12.2%). Conclusion: Although positive rate of clonorchis sinensis is still high, intervention studies for managing clonorchis sinensis were not found. So, methodological research developing clonorchis sinensis management program and intervention study is needed for high risk groups in rural communities.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to determine new source of FRUTUS GLEDITSIAE and SPINA GLEDITSIAE. Methods : We observed the morphological features of fruit, spine, seed, and measured the length, weight of fruit, and removed from the bark and seed. Results : 1. The fruit of Gleditsia sinensis is almost straight. 2. The fruit of G. sinensis is 13-19cm long. 3. The fruit of G. sinensis is 11-22g. 4. The seed of G. sinensis is irregularly spherodical or compressed spherodical. 5. The fruit of G. sinensis can be removed from the bark and seed. Conclusion : The fruit of Gleditsia sinensis is the origin of FRUTUS GLEDITSIAE, and the spine of G. sinensis is the origin of SPINA GLEDITSIAE.

Quality Characteristics and Antioxidant Activities of Bread Added with Cedrela sinensis Powder (참죽 분말을 첨가한 식빵의 품질 특성 및 항산화 활성)

  • Cedrela sinensis is a Korean traditional wild herb found especially in the southern provinces of Korea. This study investigated the effects of Cedrela sinensis powder on the antioxidant activities and quality characteristics of bread. Bread was prepared with different amounts of Cedrela sinensis powder (at ratios of 0, 1, 2, and 3% of total flour quantity). The results showed that the dough pH, moisture, and fermentation tension levels decreased as Cedrela sinensis powder content increased. Bread volume and specific volume decreased (p<0.01) with an increasing amount of Cedrela sinensis powder (Bread weight increased (p<0.001)). As Cedrela sinensis powder content increased, color 'a' value decreased, and 'b' value increased. Sensory parameters such as color (p<0.01), flavor (p<0.01), appearance (p<0.001), taste, softness (p<0.05), and overall quality (p<0.01) of bread containing 2% Cedrela sinensis powder were measured. Total phenol contents and DPPH free radical scavenging activity of bread significantly increased with increasing Cedrela sinensis powder content (p<0.001). Based on these results, we suggest that Cedrela sinensis can be used for increasing the consumer acceptability and functionality of bread.

Scavenging Activities of Reactive Oxygen and Nitrogen Species by Junglans sinensis (호도(胡桃)의 활성산소 및 활성질소 제거 기전)

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are widely implicated in the aging process and age-related diseases. The present study was carried out to investigate scavenging activities of Junglans sinensis extract and its subfraction using fluorescent probes, DCF-DA, DAF-2 and DHR 123. Jungians sinensis was washed and crushed. The crushed Junglans sinensis was extracted 3times, each time with 3 volumes of methyl alcohol at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The extract was filtered and evaporated under a reduced pressure using a rotary evaporator to yield 16 g. Scavenging activities of $ONOO^-$ was measured by Kooy' method and ROS was measured by DCFDA assay. Junglans sinensis had the marked scavenging activites of $ONOO^-$, NO and $O_2^-$. Junglans sinensis scavenged $ONOO^-$ through electron donation and dose-dependently inhibited the nitration of bovine serum albumin by $ONOO^-$. Junglans sinensis also had ROS scavenging activity. Especially, ethylacetate fraction of Junglans sinensis showed the most effective scavenging activities for ROS and RNS. These results suggest that Junglans sinensis might be developed as an effective ROS and RNS scavenger Therefore, Junglans sinensis might be used as a preventive agent for the aging and relevant to aging of illness.

Response of a Miscanthus sinensis Grassland in an Early Successional Old-Field to Fertilization

  • The effects of fetilization on the structure and function of an early successional Miscanthus sinensis grassland were investigated in an old-field ecosystem at Honjo city, Saitama Prefecture, Japan from 1981 to 1982. Compared to control plot, life form composition of treatment plot was characterized by a decrease of phanerophytes and an increase of hemicryptophytes. Fertilization had a beneficial effect on the growth in aboveground phytomass of M. sinensis, the dominant species. However, it did not cause a change in the total number of stems of M. sinensis. Annual increment of patch diameter of M. sinensis was estimated to be 6-8 cm on an average and there was no significant differecne in the growth rate of patch size between fertilized and nonfertilized plots. To estimate the aboveground phytomass of M. sinensis, several non-destructive parameters were examined. As a result, the patch size showed a high correlation with aboveground phytomass. Thus the patch size was suggested to be most applicable to its estimation. Diversity indices based on phytomass data of component species were increased slightly by fertilizatin, because relative dominance of some other species, especially of Artemisia princeps increased, while that of M. sinensis decreased. Fertilizer application resulted in a decrease in the total number of species.

Effect of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. Extract on Physico-Chemical Properties of Emulsion-Type Pork Sausages

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. extract on the physicochemical properties of emulsion-type pork sausages during storage at $10^{\circ}C$ for 4 wk. Treatments were as follows: (C, control; T1, sodium ascorbate 0.05%; T2, Gleditsia sinensis Lam. 0.05%; T3, Gleditsia sinensis Lam. 0.1%; T4, Gleditsia sinensis Lam. 0.2%; T5, Gleditsia sinensis Lam. 0.1% + sodium ascorbate 0.05%). The values of pH, moisture content, lightness, redness, and sensory attributes were all significantly decreased, while the yellowness, chroma, hue angle, and texture properties were increased during storage with increase of the Gleditsia sinensis Lam. extract added. In addition, the antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity in the sausages displayed significant increases (p<0.05). Therefore, although it was concluded that the addition of Gleditsia sinensis Lam. extract is not effective for improvement of the physical properties compared to chemical additives in sausages, it could be applied to meat products as a natural preservatives.

  • Objectives : Angelica sinensis has been used extensively in Korean traditional medicine. Although thorough clinical trials are lacking, Various pharmacological actions for Angelica sinensis has been identified newly using animal models. In addition, it was reported that reactive intermediates, potentially causing toxic effects, was isolated from components in Angelica sinensis. In this article, it was purposed for explanation and introduction of new studies for Angelica sinensis. in terms of Pharmacological action and Toxicity. Methods : New studies for Angelica sinensis were reviewed and summarized in terms of pharmacological action and toxicity. Results and Conclusions : Angelica sinensis and its components including phthalide, phthalide dimers, polysaccharides, polyacetylenes, ligustilide와 butylidenephthalide as well as organic acid showed a variety of pharmacological actions on uterine, cardiovascular system and immune system. In addition, it was identified that three components of such as ligustilide, caffeic acid and safrole was biotransformed to reactive intermediates causing possibly toxicity.

Studies on Anopheles sinensis, the vector species of vivax malaria in Korea

  • Extensive previous studies on taxonomy, behavior/bionomics and control of Anopheles sinensis are reviewed and summarized. Recent molecular identification revealed that the population of An. sinensis complex includes An. sinensis, An. pullus, An. lesteri and at least two new species, and An. yatsushiroensis is synonmy of An. pullus. An. sinensis is the main vector specie of vivax malaria in Korea. Larvae of An. sinensis breed in wide range of habitats which are naturally-made clean water, stagnant or flowing; main habitats include rice fields, ditches, streams, irrigation cannals, marshes, ponds, ground pools, etc. Their host preferences are highly zoophilic. Human blood rate is very low ($0.7-1.7\%$); nevertheless An. sinensis readily feeds on man when domestic animals are not found near by. They feed on hosts throughout the night from dusk to dawn with a peak period of 02:00-04:00 hours; they are slightly more exophagic (biting outdoors); much larger numbers come into the room when light is on. Main resting places are outdoors such as grasses, vegetable fields and rice fields. A mark-release-recapture study resulted that $37.1\%$ was recaptured within 1 km, $29.4\%$ at 1-3 km, $21.1\%$ at 3-6 km, $10.3\%$ at 6-9 km and $2.1\%$ at 9-12 km distance. An. sinensis hibernate outdoors (mostly under part of dense grasses) during October-March. At the end of the hibernation period (March-April) they feed on cows at daytime. Until today any single measure to effectively control An. sinensis population has not been found. Indoor residual spray with a long-lasting insecticide can not reduce vector population densities, but shorten their life spans in some degree, so contributes to malaria control.

Antioxidant Activity and Quality Characteristics of Jeonbyeong added Cedrela sinensis Powder (참죽 분말을 첨가한 전병의 항산화 활성 및 품질특성)

  • Cedrela sinensis is a Korean traditional wild herb that has special taste, aroma and red leaves. Only Korean and Chinese have been eating blanched Cedrela sinensis leaves. In this study, quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of Cedrela sinensis Jeonbyeong were compared and analyzed by pulverizing Cedrela sinensis leaves and subsequently adding by adjusting the amount of Cedrela sinensis powder. For analyzing the quality characteristics, the moisture content and pH of Jeonbyeong batter, specific volume, moisture content, color, texture profile analysis and sensory evaluations are measured. Total phenolic content showed $16.11{\pm}0.09$ mg GAE/100 g in the 12% Cedrela sinensis powder added group, which was the highest. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of Jeonbyeong indicated the highest score in the 12% Cedrela sinensis powder added group(p<0.001). While the pH(p<0.01) and moisture content(p<0.001) of batter and moisture content(p<0.01) of Jeonbyeong significantly decreased with increasing Cedrela sinensis powder content. Chromaticity measurement results of Jeonbyeong showed significantly decreased L value and b value chromaticity (p<0.001) and increased a value. Hardness significantly increased with increasing Cedrela sinensis powder content. In the sensory evaluations, 9% Cedrela sinensis powder added group ranked significantly higher than any other group in every section. From these results, we suggest that Cedrela sinensis leaves show remarkable antioxidant activity as a good ingredient for functional processed food.
