  • When the yield line theory is used to estimate the ultimate strength of a concrete barrier, it is of primary importance that the correct assumption is made for the failure mode of the barrier. In this study, a static test was performed on two full-scale concrete barrier specimens of Korean standard shape that simulate the actual behavior of a longitudinally continuous barrier. This was conducted in order to verify the failure mode presented in the AASHTO LRFD specification. The resulting shape of the yield lines differed from that presented in AASHTO when subjected to an equivalent crash load. Furthermore, the ultimate strengths of the specimens were lower than the theoretical prediction. The main causes of these differences can be attributed to the characteristics of the barrier shape and to a number of limitations associated with the classical yield line theory. Therefore, a revised failure mode with corresponding prediction equations of the strength were proposed based on the yield lines observed in the test. As a result, a strength that was more comparable to that of the test could be obtained. The proposed procedure can be used to establish more realistic test levels for barriers that have a similar shape.

  • In this study, designs of protection fences such as the concrete median barrier and the guardrail were performed. The foreign standard of concrete median barrier was introduced and implemented without modification fitting to domestic vehicles and highway conditions. In a car accident, median barrier doesn't protect vehicles effectively, especially for heavy vehicles such as bus and heavy truck. Guardrail doesn't protect vehicle effectively, either. The purpose of this study is to develop the optimal performance design of concrete median barrier and design of guardrail using the design of experiment as well as crashworthiness analysis which is done by Pam-Crash. As a result of this study, an optimal design of concrete median barrier was obtained considering von Mises stress, volume and COG acceleration of truck. And design of guardrail satisfying the domestic requirements was obtained.

  • The current Korea bridge design specifications have no provisions about concrete Barrier. And there are no test results of registence strength of the concrete barrier at the vehicle collision sites. This paper reports experimental results of concrete barrier on bridge deck conctructed by standard drawing of SB5 grade. Eight specimens were tested under static test. The specimens are divided by two groups (D-series and B-series). D-series is to show failure pattern of bridge deck. B-series is to show failure pattern of concrete Barrier. The test results compared with calculation results using Yield-Line theory of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.

  • In the present paper, a methodology has been presented for the reliability assessment of concrete barriers that lie at a certain depth in the soil, and a missile (a rigid projectile) impacts the top of the soil cover normally, and subsequently after penetrating the soil cover completely it hits the barrier with certain striking velocity. For this purpose, using expressions available in the literature, striking velocity of missile at any depth of soil has been derived and then expressions for the depths of penetration in crater and tunnel region of concrete barrier have been deduced. These depths of penetration have been employed for the derivation of limit state functions. Using the derived limit state functions reliability assessment of underground concrete barrier has then been carried out through First Order Reliability Method (FORM). To study the influence of various random variables on barrier reliability, sensitivity analysis has also been carried out. In addition, a number of parametric studies is conducted to obtain the results of practical interest.

  • This paper reports on the development of a new composite slab system that uses a large- lipped steel channel and reinforced concrete. The advantages of this new system are that it serves as both a structural unit and an unsupported form and it has a secondary structural barrier function. A concrete pouring test was carried out for the large-lipped steel channel. Full-scale tests were carried out to assess the flexural strength-deformation characteristics and structural mechanics of the composite slab. The barrier mechanics of the steel channel concrete element (referred to as the SC subunit) of the composite slab are examined. The test results indicate that the new composite slab has excellent strength, ductility characteristics, and a structural barrier function in its SC subunit that is highly effective against severe loading.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an optimal performance design ova concrete median barrier using the design of experiment and crash simulation which is done by Pam-Crash, one of the commercial crash simulation software. A formula of characteristic value was suggested to obtain an optimal performance design considering all of von Mises stress, volume and acceleration at center of gravity of a heavy truck. An optimal design of a concrete median barrier was obtained by the analysis of variance based on design of experiment and crash simulation. A crash simulation with the optimal design was accomplished in order to verify the suitability of the suggested formula and the proper application of the design of experiment. The obtained optimal design was satisfied for a domestic design regulation of a concrete median barrier.

  • Recently, there was an collision accident of vehicle-concrete median barrier and unfortunately, passengers were killed by exceeded capacity of concrete median. Therefore, improving the capacity of concrete median barrier is need to reduce damage. Accordingly, in this study, appropriate collision model verified by using the FE analysis program LS-Dyna and recommend a concrete median barrier section. The improvement parameters such as wire mesh diameter, steel plate, rubber pad were selected for improved capacity of the median barrier. Finally, section of concrete median barrier improved wire mesh diameter decreased volume loss, section of concrete median barrier improved rubber pad accepted impact loading and increased elastic area.

  • In this paper we proposed an easy method to calculate the thickness of primary protective barrier for radiographic equipment. The concrete was selected for the shielding material. The area of protective barrier was divided into a controlled area and a noncontrolled area. For the computation of thickness, the data in NCRP Report 49 and 51 was used. For radiographic equipments whose maximum tubevoltages are 100 and 150 kVp, the thicknesses of concrete were calculated as a function of distance. From the calculated data, four analytical models were acquired by fitting an exponential decay function. From the equations acquired by this study, the thickness of primary protective barrier can be calculated approximately.

  • The concrete median barrier used currently in South Korea was developed the impact level of SB5-B(270kJ). However, the impact level of SB6(420kJ) should be considered in many placed with the increased accident of heavy vehicles. In order to increase the impact resistance of newly developed concrete median barrier, the computer simulation was conducted before real field test. For the accurate behavior of concrete, the parameter, such as impact vehicle, concrete cover depth and deterioration, was important. In this paper, a parametric study was conducted depending on vehicle curb weight, concrete cover depth and level of deterioration. The impact resistance of concrete median barrier was severely changed depending on vehicle curb weight and concrete cover depth. Furthermore, the impact resistance of concrete median barrier was also decreased due to deterioration of concrete, therefore the repair and rehabilitation should be conducted for damaged concrete depending on deterioration level. Therefore, vehicle curb weight, cover depth of concrete structures and deterioration level of concrete should be carefully considered for conducting analysis of concrete structure to vehicle collision.
