  • Message replay, malicious Access Point (AP) associations and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are the major threats in Wireless LANs. These threats are possible due to a lack of proper authentication and insecure message communications between wireless devices. Current wireless authentication & key exchange (AKE) schemes and security protocols (WEP, WPA and IEEE 802.11i) are not sufficient against these threats. This paper presents a novel Secure WLAN Authentication Scheme (SWAS). The scheme introduces the delegation concept of mobile authentication in WLANs, and provides mutual authentication to all parties (Wireless Station, Access Point and Authentication Server). The messages involved in the process serve both authentication and key refreshing purposes. The scheme enhances the security by protecting the messages through cryptographic techniques and reduces the DoS impact. The results showed that cryptographic techniques do not result in extra latencies in authentication. The scheme also reduces the communication cost and network overhead.

  • Design of efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols with both high throughput performances is a major focus in distributed contention based MAC protocol research. In this paper, we propose an efficient contention based MAC protocol for wireless Local Area Networks, namely, the Developed Collision Resolution (DCR) algorithm. This algorithm is developed based on the following innovative ideas: to speed up the collision resolution, we actively redistribute the backoff timers for all active nodes; to reduce the average number of idle slots, we use smaller contention window sizes for nodes with successful packet transmissions and reduce the backoff timers exponentially fast when a fixed number of consecutive idle slots are detected. We show that the proposed DCR algorithm provides high throughput performance and low latency in wireless LANs.

  • Signals transmitted from access point (AP) or stations in different wireless LANs (WLAN) interfere each other when the WLANs are closely installed. When they are configured to use the same channel, signals from an WLAN get collided with signals from other WLANs so that the delay increases to user stations and the throughput decreases. In this paper, we propose a method in which an AP in a basic service set (BSS) detects other BSSs using the same channel and switches to a different channel not being occupied by any other BSS. We can avoid using the same channel with other BSS in spacially overlapped BSS environment. The proposed scheme is simulated and its characteristics are described with the analysis of the result. The results measured in terms of throughput show that the problems in overlapped wireless LANs can be resolved with the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic switching technology between the ad-hoc and the infrastructure modes without user intervention in the IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN. Also, we design our proposed technology and implemented on the Linux machine. For this operation, the area within an Access Point (AP) coverage is defined as a switching area, and a node without any transmission in this area is assumed to be able to relay frames between the AP and nodes in the shaded area that is outside the coverage and cannot reach the AP. By using the proposed technology, it is possible to provide the seamless Internet access service to nodes at the ad-hoc mode in the shaded area. In this paper, we explains the operation of the detection method of the switching area, presents the flowchart and implementation environment. To prove the operation of our technology, we obtain the results of captured packets transmitted between nodes and throughput results through ftp transmission experiment. Hence, we can see that our proposed scheme can be improve the wireless access service in wireless and mobile networks.

  • DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) defined in IEEE 802.11 provides two different modes, namely, a 2-way handshake and a 4-way handshake according to the transmission procedure. If secondary transmission would not cause a collision with primary transmission, there is no need to postpone transmission unnecessarily. We study a feasible condition which can transmit data concurrently and propose a concurrent transmission scheme.

  • This paper suggests a low-complexity frame timing synchronization system for IEEE802.11a wireless LAN systems. The proposed timing synchronization scheme has been implemented by correlating the received OFDM preamble with quantized coefficients composed of {0, ${\pm}$2$^{0}$ , ${\pm}$2$^1$‥‥‥ ${\pm}$2$^{i}$ ), where i is an integer number. The 2$^{i}$ -valued coefficients enable the multipliers in the correlation system to be simplified to i-bit shifters. So we can design the correlation system using shifters instead of multipliers. We estimate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with conventional systems under the AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. In this paper we show that the complexity can be reduced by 90% while still maintaining a performance comparable to that of the conventional system.

  • Mobile portable devices for wireless network solely depend on a limited battery power. Therefore, we need to design for wireless communication protocols with an energy efficiency. TCP-Westwood is one of the most important approaches on TCP performance improvement in wireless environments that estimates the available bandwidth by using the sampling mechanism. The advantage is that data can be transmitted efficiently using the estimation of available bandwidth. However, when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment, it does not consider of the sampling mechanism operation. In this thesis, a new energy saving transport protocol, called E2TP(Energy Efficient Transport Protocol), is proposed to solve problems which occur when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment. Also, when there are packet loss while doing frequent link error in a wireless environment, E2TP provides the instantaneous segment size adjustment for a more efficient data retransmission. The simulation result proves that the proposed E2TP has better performance in energy efficiency and throughput than both TCP and TCP-Westwood.

  • Power efficiency becomes more important in wireless LANs as the mobile stations send more data with limited batteries. It has been known that the IEEE 802.11 PSM is not efficient in high load networks: AP cannot deliver buffered packets to a PS station immediately and it can lead the station to stay in active state quite long and result in energy waste. Moreover, it is inefficient that only one data frame is retrieved by a PS-POLL frame. In this paper, we propose a time slotted scheme to enhance the PSM, in which a mobile station can reserve time slots to receive data frames. Our mechanism can reduce collisions by reservation and decrease the channel occupancy by transmitting multiple data frames via one PS-POLL. The analytic model and simulation results show that proposed scheme reduces power consumption significantly and enhances the performance of PSM.

  • CMOS LC VCO with fast response adaptive frequency calibration (AFC) technique for IEEE 802.11a/b/g WLANs is designed in 1.8V $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The possible operation is verified for 5.8GHz band, 5.2GHz band, and 2.4GHz band using the switchable L-C resonators. To linearize its frequency-voltage gain (Kvco), optimized multiple MOS varactor biasing tecknique is used. In order to operate in each band frequency range with reduced VCO gain, 4-bit digitally controlled switched- capacitor bank is used and a wide-range digital logic quadricorrelator (WDLQ) is implemented for fast frequency detector.
