  • This paper introduces a hovering-type autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed for research and its fundamental motion performance results obtained by simulation and field test. The AUV can control its motion in four degrees of freedom (DOF) by means of its horizontal and vertical thrusters, and it is designed to provide a test-bed that facilitates ease of operation and experimentation. Prior to the field tests, six DOF equations of motion are developed, and a simulation program is constructed using MATLAB and Simulink to verify the essential motion performance of the designed vehicle. Furthermore, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and fuzzy PID controller are designed, and their performances are verified through a simulation. Field tests are performed to verify the motion performance of the AUV; way-point tracking is executed by the PID and fuzzy PID controllers. The results confirmed appropriate control performance under current disturbances.

  • In the present study, two phase flows around a projectile vertically launched from an underwater platform have been numerically investigated by using a three dimensional multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. The relative motion between the platform and projectile was described by six degrees of freedom(6DOF) equations of motion with Euler angles and a chimera technique. The propulsive power of the projectile was modeled as the fluid force acting on the lower surface of the body by the compressed air emitted from the platform. Qualitative analysis was conducted for the time history of vapor volume fraction distributions. Uncorking pressure around the projectile and platform was analyzed to predict impact force acting on the surfaces. The results of 6DOF analysis presented similar tendency with the surficial pressure distributions.

  • A prediction of store separation trajectory using grid survey method has been conducted. For the grid survey method, store's aerodynamic flowfield data such as freestream and grid data is needed to solve 6 degree of freedom(6-DOF) equations of motion. In the presented study, aerodynamic flowfield data was generated by Euler solver instead of CTS wind tunnel test. The predicted trajectories shows good agreement with CTS test results.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impact that change in speed and modeling methods has on maglevs' runnability. The study constructed equations of motion on 4-DOF, 6DOF, and 10-DOF vehicles respectively and carried out numerical analysis, applying 4th Runge Kutta method, in order to run six different model maglev as changing the vehicles speed on the same bridge that had 2000 to 1 deflection. The analysis revealed that maglev's runnability improved as speed was lower and the specific model had higher number of bogey and EMS.

  • A program that predicts trajectories of projectiles influenced by the interference flow field of helicopters is developed. The interference flow field are computed using a compressible inviscid solver in conjunction with an actuator disc model. The trajectories are predicted using 6-DOF (Degree of Freedom) equations as well as an alternative form of modified point mass equations of motion. The method for the interference flow field prediction method are validated with ROBIN(ROtor Body INteraction) model. A Sierra international bullet and a 105mm projectile are used to validate the trajectory method. Trajectories of a Sierra International bullet and a HYDRA 70 rocket firing from a helicopter are predicted.

  • In this paper, in order to analyze the dynamic response of a floating crane when it lifts a heavy cargo, the boom of the floating crane is considered as an elastic beam. The boom is divided into elements based on finite element formulation and the floating frame of reference formulation and nodal coordinates are employed to model the boom as a flexible body. As an extension of the previous study, in order to consider spatial motion in waves, the coupled equations of motions of the 6 degree of freedom (DOF) floating crane and 6 DOF cargo are developed based on the flexible multibody system dynamics. The 3 dimensional deformation of the elastic boom is considered with 18 DOF. The dynamic simulation of the floating crane and the cargo is performed under regular wave conditions with various cargo weights. Finally, the effects of the elastic boom on lifting cargo are discussed by comparing the simulation results between the elastic boom and a rigid boom.

  • Wave exciting force and moment generate the motions of a ship in waves. Since ship motion exerts the negative influences on a crew's operability, the safety of cargos, passenger's comfort, etc, the anti-rolling devices may be required to reduce such motion. In this paper, the dynamics of the anti-rolling devices such as passive and active moving weight stabilizer and anti-rolling tank, and fin stabilizer are mathematically modeled. While the effect of the motion of the anti-rolling device on a ship was taken into consideration in roll mode only in the past, the 6 DOF coupled equations of motion between a ship and the anti-rolling devices are constituted. Finally the motion of a ship with anti-rolling devices in waves is simulated through the developed simulation program.

  • In this paper the attitude control system is developed for longitudinal motion of Foil-Catamaran in regular waves with all-movable foils which attached to fore and after part of the ship and verified the system by theoretical calculation and model-tests. The linearized equations of motion of the ship is employed to apply the linear control theories, the PID control and the LQR. The strip method was used to calculate hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces of the demi hull, and unsteady hydrodynamic forces of foils are considered by using the result of Wu(1972). About 40-60% of motions is reduced in experiments. The control system described in this paper is able to extended to 6-DOF motions or control in irregular wave with trivial modification. And it is applicable to hull shape development for better seakeeping performance and to determine the size and the position of hydrofoils for the attitude control.

  • In this paper, a direct identification of modal parameters using the continuous wavelet transform is proposed. The purpose of this method is to transform the differential equations of motion into a system of algebraic linear equations whose unknown coefficients are modal parameters. The efficiency of the present method is confirmed by numerical data, without and with noise contamination, simulated from a discrete forced system with four degrees-of-freedom (4DOF) proportionally damped.

  • This paper describes the mathematical model and controller design for Manta-type Unmanned Underwater Test Vehicle (MUUTV) with 6 DOF nonlinear dynamic equations. The mathematical model contains hydrodynamic forces and moments expressed in terms of a set of hydrodynamic coefficients which were obtained through the PMM (Planar Motion Mechanism) test. Based on the 6 DOF dynamic equations, numerical simulations have been performed to analyze the dynamic performances of the MUUTV. In addition, using the mathematical model PID and sliding mode controller are constructed for the diving and steering maneuver. Simulation results show that the control performances of the MUUTV and compared with these of NPS (Naval Postgraduate School) AUV II.
