Each participant completed a children's perception of parental conflict scale, a children's aggression scale, and a peer harassment scale. Major findings of this study are as follows: 1) In terms of physical harassment, boys were bullied and victimized more than girls. 2) Children's aggression was positively related to the physical and relational peer harassment. Parents' marital conflict was positively related to children's aggression. This study examined whether the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differ by grade, gender, reason for and length of residence, age at entering the institution, parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. We assumed that the ego-identities of institutionalized children had an effect on social interactions. The subjects were 121 5th and 6th graders, 135 middle, and 85 high school students who were institutionalized in Seoul. As predicted, the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents differed by grade, and by such social interactions as parents' visiting, relationship with parents before entering the institution, and caretakers' emotional support. Results support the importance of social interactions for understanding the ego-identities of institutionalized children and adolescents.
The purpose of this was to investigate the relationship institutionalized childrens ego-identities and internal locus of control to behavior problems. The subjects were 119 5th and 6th graders(58 boys, 61 girls) who were institutionalized in Seoul. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) The institutionalized childrens internal locus of control and ego-identity were not significant difference in gender, reason for entering the institution and duration in he institution. The institutionalized childrens internal locus of control was significantly related to their ego-identity. The more internal locus of control, the higher ego-identity. 2) The institutionalized childrens behavior problems were not significant difference in gender and duration in the institution, but were significant difference reason for entering the institution. The children who were institutionalized by parents absence were more likely to have behavior problems than children by economic problem or marital conflict. The institutionalized childrens behavior problems were significantly related to their ego-identities and internal locus of control. The less internal locus of control, the more behavior problems, and the less ego-identities, the more behavior problems.
This study analyzed the contents of reading textbooks of Chinese-Korean $1^{st}$, $4^{th}$, and $7^{th}$ graders in Yanji, China with reference to ecological systems and values. Results showed that the literature genre of Korean textbooks in China was predominantly novels/stories(38.5%) rather than essays(13.7%), poems/verses/rhymes(16.2%) or others(31.6%). Characters were classified into 9 categories and analyzed by Bronfenbrenner's ecological paradigm. It was found that Chinese-Korean textbooks included more characters belonging to exo- or macro-systems including school, community, and government while Korean textbooks emphasized the self or the family, both belonging to the micro-system. Values in Chinese-Korean textbooks emphasized community and government. Korean textbooks emphasized individual life. Differences were more pronounced in textbooks of the upper grades.
This paper examined individual and social factors associated with children's anxiety, depressive symptoms, and self-worth. Seven hundred and thirty-eight 5th and 6th graders completed measures of affective problems, self-worth, styles of attribution, daily hassles, parenting, and social support. Regression analyses revealed that maladaptive styles of attribution and daily hassles were significantly associated with anxiety, depressive symptoms, and low self-worth. Results also indicated that social support played an important role in explaining depressive symptoms, emphasizing the role of social support of friends in preventing affective problems and enhancing self-worth. Results were discussed in terms of their implications for prevention and intervention.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-worth in the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms. Seven hundred and thirty-eight 5th and 6th graders in Seoul completed questionnaires. Path analysis demonstrated that social support had a significant direct effect on depressive symptoms. This analysis also revealed that social support influenced depressive symptoms through self-worth. These findings suggest that the relationship between perceived social support and depressive symptoms in children is partially mediated through a personal variable like self-worth.
