Performance Analysis of 1.5kW-class Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell Stack (1.5kW급 용융탄산염 연료전지 스택의 성능 분석)

  • 용융탄산염 연료전지의 대형화에 관한 기본 기술을 확립하기 위하여 전극의 유효면적이 625 $\textrm{cm}^2$인 단위전지를 20단 적층한 내부 분배형 용융탄산염 연료전지 스택을 제작하고 그 성능을 살펴보았다. 연료로 72% H2/18% CO2/10% H2O를 , 산화제로는 70% air/30% CO2의 혼합 기체를 사용하여 운전한 결과 전류밀도가 150 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$이고 연료 및 산화제의 이용율이 0.4일 때, 스택 전압이 16.62 V로 1.56 kW의 높은 초기출력을 나타내었다. 스택 내 분리판에서의 온도 분포는 가스 흐름 방향으로 온도가 증가하였으며 스택출력이 높아질수록 가스 배출 부분의 온도가 상승하였다. 스택 내 각 단위전지간의 성능 분포는 균일하지 않았으며, 가스이용율에 따라 그 편차가 증가하였다. 연속 운전 300시간 후부터 스택의 성능이 감소하였으며, 그 원인을 분석한 겨로가 탄소 석출과 부식 생성물에 의한 전기 단락 때문으로 밝혀졌다. 본 연구를 통하여 anode 출구에서의 가스 조성을 분석함으로써 전기 단락에 의한 전압 손실량을 계산하는 기법을 확립하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 얻은 결과를 통하여 향후 스택의 대형화와 장수명화에 대한 대책을 제시하였다.

  • Fuel Cell cogeneration system is a promising technology for generating electricity and heat with high efficiency of low pollutant emission. We have been developed 5kW class fuel cell cogeneration system for commercial and residential application. The fuel processor is a crucial part of producing hydrogen from the fossil fuels such as LNG and LPG. The 5kW class high efficiency fuel processor consists of steam reformer, CO shift converter, CO preferential oxidation(PrOx) reactor, burner and heat exchanger. The one-stage CO shift converter process using a metal oxide catalyst was adopted. The efficiency of 5 kW class fuel processor shows 75% based on LHV. In addition, for the purpose of continuous operation with load fluctuations in the commercial system for residential use, load change of fuel processor was tested. Efficiency of 30%, 50%, 70% and 100% load shows 75%, 75%, 73% and 72%(LHV), respectively. Also, during the load change conditions, the product gas composition was stable and the outlet CO concentration was below 5 ppm. The Fuel processor operation was carried out in residential fuel cell cogeneration system with fuel cell stack under dynamic conditions. The 5kW class fuel processor have been evaluated for long-term durability and reliability test including with improvement in optimal operation logic.

  • The fuel cell technology has been considered as a technology to reduce greenhouse gases emission from a ship. In this research, internal reforming 500kW solid oxide fuel cell system fueled by methane for a ship were developed. Characteristics of gas temperature, stack power and system efficiency depending on the air flow rate, $CH_4$ flow rate, $H_2O$ flow rate, and system operation pressure are evaluated. As a result, air and $CH_4$ flow rate directly affect the temperature of inlet and outlet gas in the fuel cell stack. When the air and $H_2O$ flow rate increase, the stack power and system efficiency increases. However, the case of $CH_4$ flow rate increase, the efficiency decreases.

  • The concentration of solute in a $NaBH_4$ solution is limited due to the low solubility of $NaBO_2$. The performance of a hydrogen generation system was evaluated using various concentrations of $NaBH_4$ solution. First, a self-hydrolysis test and a hydrogen generation test for 30 min were performed. The composition of $NaBH_4$ solution was selected to be 1 wt% NaOH + 25 wt% $NaBH_4$+74wt% $H_2O$ by considering the amount of hydrogen loss, stability of hydrogen generation, $NaBO_2$ precipitation, conversion efficiency, and the purpose of its application. A hydrogen generation system for a 200 W fuel cell was evaluated for 3 h. Although hydrogen generation rate decreased with time due to $NaBO_2$ precipitation, hydrogen was produced for 3 h (conversion efficiency: 87.4%). The energy density of the 200 W fuel cell system was 263 Wh/kg. A small unmanned aerial vehicle with this fuel cell system can achieve 1.5 times longer flight time than one flying on batteries.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell operate at high temperature ($800{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$). High temperature have an advantage of system efficiency, but a weak durability. In this study, linear state space controller is designed to handle the temperature of solid oxide fuel cell system for proper thermal management. System model is developed under simulink environment with Thermolib$^{(R)}$. Since the thermally optimal system integration improves efficiency, very complicated thermal integration approach is selected for system integration. It shows that temperature response of fuel cell stack and catalytic burner are operated at severe non-linearity. To control non-linear temperature response of SOFC system, gain scheduled linear quadratic regulator is designed. Results shows that the temperature response of stack and catalytic burner follows the command over whole ranges of operations.

  • In proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), proper thermal management of the stack and moisture generation by electrochemical reactions significantly affect fuel cell performance. In this study, the PEMFC dynamic characteristic model was developed through Simcenter AMESim, a development program. In addition, the developed model aims to understand the thermal resin balance of the stack and performance characteristics for input loads. The developed model applies the thermal management model of the stack and the moisture content and permeability model to simulate voltage loss and stack thermal behavior precisely. This study extended the C based AMESet (adaptive modeling environment submodeling tool) to simulate electrochemical reactions inside the stack. Fuel cell model of AMESet was liberalized with AMESim and then integrated with the balance of plant (BOP) model and analyzed. And It is intended to be used in component design through BOP analysis. The resistance loss of the stack and thermal behavior characteristics were predicted, and the impact of stack performance and efficiency was evaluated.

  • 고유가 시대의 도래와 화석연료의 소비를 줄일 수 있는 환경 친화적 자동차인 하이브리드 자동차의 도입이 일본, 미국 등을 중심으로 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 이 중 마일드 하이브리드 시스템은 Idle Stop-Start, Launch Assist 및 회생 제동 등의 기능을 적용하여 연비개선의 효과를 갖고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기존 화석 연료를 사용하는 자동차에도 적용이 가능하며 2차 전지에 비해 수명이 긴 슈퍼 커패시터를 사용하여 MHEV용 5kW급 저압 인버터 시스템을 개발하였다.

  • 본 논문에서는 수 kW급 이상의 연료전지 응용을 위한 고효율 전압원 3상 DC-DC 컨버터를 제안한다. 제안한 컨버터는 전압원 컨버터임에도 작은 턴비(기존 풀브리지의 1/2 이하)를 가지며 입 출력 전류 리플이 작다. 또한 클램프 회로의 동작으로 다이오드 서지전압 제거는 물론 저전압측 순환전류를 큰 폭으로 감소시켜 스위치의 도통손실과 변압기의 동손을 최소화하였고 전 부하영역에서 하측 스위치의 ZVZCS를 성취하여 스위칭 손실을 최소화 하였다. 또한 유효 듀티를 증가시켜 누설인덕턴스에 의한 듀티 손실을 보상하였다. 본 논문에서는 제안하는 컨버터의 동작원리를 서술하고 1.5kW Prototype을 제작하여 실험을 통해 본 방식의 타당성을 검증하였다.

Development of the 1kW Class Regenerative Fuel Cell for Ground Simulator of Regeneration Electric Power System (재생전원 시스템의 지상 시뮬레이터용 1kW급 재생형 연료전지 개발)

  • The PEM type regenerative fuel cell(RFC) for the ground simulator of the regeneration electric power system has been designed, manufactured, and tested. In this paper, the designing and manufacturing procedures of the RFC were presented. Also, the performance test results were showed briefly. The RFC consists of PEM type stack, humidifier, pressure and flow control valve, storage tanks, pump and controller. The performance tests were carried out with stack and system performance tests. The performance targets are more than 50% stack efficiency, 1.5kW stack power, less 400W parasitic power in design condition. Most of the performances required are satisfied.
