The High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and related factors in Korean middle-aged (한국 중년의 고밀도지단백(HDL) 콜레스테롤과 관련요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to promote health in middle-aged Koreans (40-59 years old) by understanding health behaviors that affect high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level among various health behaviors. In a national health and nutrition survey, raw data combined on a total of 7,406 persons, IV-3 (2009), V-1 (2010), V-2 (2011), V-3 (2012), and VI-1 (2013), were selected as the final analysis subjects. HDL cholesterol was divided into two groups: less than 40 mg/dl and more than 40 mg/dl. The results of multiple logistic regression analysis were as follows: OR=3.916 for males, OR=3.439 for normal than low weight, OR=7.336 for obesity than low weight, OR=1.629 for alcohol consumption, OR=1.498 for smokers, OR=1.426 for don't practice moderate physical activity, OR=1.264 for no walking exercise, OR=1.510 for carbohydrates normal intake than low intake, OR 1.787 for carbohydrates over intake than low intake when HDL cholesterol increased from 40 mg/dl to less than 40 mg/dl. Korean middle-aged high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels should be increased to maintain proper health through aerobic exercise, smoking cessation, proper drinking habits, obesity relief, healthy eating out, and healthy food choices. This requires continuous publicity and education within the community, and a social environment should be built that enables health behavior to be practiced in daily life.

A Study of Factors Related to Job Satisfaction Affecting Service Year: A Dental Hygienist in Seoul (근속연수에 영향을 미치는 직무만족요인에 관한 연구: 서울지역 치과위생사를 중심으로)

  • Despite the high demand for dental care professionals, high turnover of dental hygienists have been reported, especially among workers in the dental clinics. This study aimed to examine job satisfaction factors affecting dental hygienist's service year in Seoul using cross-sectional data. The questionnaire survey was conducted from August 26, 2013 to September 13, 2013. Data were collected from 296 employees of dental clinics and hospitals located in Seoul. Logistic regression analysis was applied for parameter estimates, using PASW Statistics 18.0 and R software version 3.0.3. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the total job satisfaction factors was 0.922. In descriptive statistics, the group (that less than four years of working and over four years of working) had a statistically significant difference in age, religion, experience of turnover and autonomous factor among job satisfaction factors. In multiple logistic regression model, autonomy in job satisfaction was an important factor to predict the length of service in dental hygienist (odds ratio, 2.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.06~6.60). Autonomous factor was a significant predictor of length of service for dental hygienist. This study encourages future investigations of the role of job satisfaction of service year using better analytical frameworks.

Construction of Spatial Information and Growth Status of All Tree Individuals in the Gyerim Historical Site, Gyeongju (문화재로서 경주 계림 내 생육수목 현황 및 공간정보 구축 연구)

  • This study was intended to provide management directions through the provision of tree spatial information as basic data for the preservation of Gyerim(legal historical site), which is located in Gyeongju city, Gyeonsangnam-do, Korea. As a result of the survey of the entire forest, there are a total of 25 species and 510 individuals growing trees. Of these species, 14 species are native and 14 are introduced species. Apart from Sophora japonica, Zelkova serrata, Celtis sinensis, most of the introduced species were adopted without historical basis after designation as a historical site. By a ratio of 36% to introduced species(including 3% of naturalized species; Ailanthus altissima), the historical heritage was significantly damaged. Gyerim, which has over 2,000 years of history, has a total 15 individuals(2.9%) large trees(over 100cm DBH). Ten of these are Salix glandulosa, and in the past, most of this area was considered a Salix glandulosa forest. Currently, however, there are many small trees(under 20cm DBH) for the next generation of growth and the Salix glandulosa forest will continue to decline. Furthermore, most small trees were afforested, so the historicity and place features as a mythological forest will quickly fade.

A study on the performance of the sacrificial anode used for cathodic protection of a marine bridge after 8 years (해상 교량에 설치된 희생양극식 전기방식의 8년 이후의 성능에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, corrosion occurred on the piles of a marine bridge located on the NamHae expressway in Korea. A sacrificial anode cathodic protection system was installed to prevent corrosion damage in the marine bridge. In the case of the marine bridge in this study, the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system was applied at the tidal and splash zones of the piles because the upper part of the structure was not corroded, and because corrosion occurs at the tidal and splash zones due to sea tides. To verify the performance of the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system 8 years later, cathodic protection (CP) current, CP potential, and degree of depolarization were measured. The experimental results on the performance of the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system from a total of 60 piles were classified into 4 categories: good CP effect results (13 piles), partial CP effect results (27 piles), temporarily erroneous results (5 piles), and need for maintenance because of delamination (15 piles). It was determined that additional repairs are required, such as the application of bulk anodes and jacket casings, for piles where the CP effect is poor.

Studies on Analytical Methods for N-Methylcarbamate Residues in Crops by Spectrophotometry and Gas Liquid Chromatography (작물체중(作物體中) N-Methylcarbamate계(系) 농약(農藥)의 잔류분석법(殘留分析法)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Analytical methods for residues of six N-methylcarbamate insecticides were investigated to compare the minimum detectability, recovery from several crops and feasibility of multiple residue analysis. Those methods studied in this work included spectrophotometry by diazotization and gas chromatography by N-trifluoroacetylation(TFA), pentafluorobenzylether(PFB) and dinitrophenylether (DNP) derivatization. Maximum absorbed wavelength of the diazotized MIPC, XMC, BPMC, propoxur and carbofu ran was around 460 ㎚, while that of carbaryl recorded 510 ㎚. Recovery from brown rice and apple by diazotization method ranged from 80 to 120% and minimum detectable limits were 0.03 to 0.05 ppm in 50 g of the sample. Minimum detectability of PFB derivatives by gas chromatography was superior to TFA and DNP derivatives. DNP derivatives showed the longest retention time among the given derivatives. Recovery from crops by gas chromatographic met hod ranged 74 to 94%, 78 to 93%, and 85 to 99% in brown rice, rice straw and apple, respectively. Limit of detection was 0.01 ppm for TFA, 0.005 ppm for PFB and 0.02 ppm for DNP derivatives in 50 g of the crop samples.

Study on the morphological Characteristics of Local Cultivars in Paeonia spp. (지방 수집 작약의 유망계통에 대한 형태학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The major morphological characteristics of 97 lines selected from 1,510 local collection lines of Paeonia spp. were studied and classified into some groups according to their Q correlation. The Coefficient of Variation of 8 characteristics in 97 lines varied greatly with the range from 21.3% to 127.1%. The 22 lines with useful morphological characteristics selected from 97 lines had 2n=10 chromosomes, in which there were no difference among the number of chromosomes of 22 lines. The 97 lines were classified into 14 groups based upon the results of Q correlation analysis obtained from data with 16 quantitative factors; Group III and group VI were divided into two sub-groups. Group I was large flowered lines with a single flower, Group IIIa, doubled flowered lines, Group VII, late maturing lines and Group IX, early maturing lines flowering in 17th May. Group VIII were dwarf type lines which has the shortest stem length and leaf length among 14 groups, which are suitable for potted plants. Group XIII had a lot of stems per plant and a large type leaf with leaf length and width. A needle-type leaf was found in Group X, whereas a wide and oval-type leaf in group XII.

  • Korean Peninsula Flora Database (KPF database), developed by T.B. Lee Herbarium of Seoul National University comprises ca. 65,000 accessions of vascular plants collected from Korean peninsula from 1850 to 1945. Among these, material from North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is represented with ca. 33,000 accessions. The largest part of this material [ca. 4287 accessions (13%) from North Korea] originates from five Japanese and one American collectors, such as Imai, Hanjiro, Mills, Ralph Garfield, Furumi, Masatomi, Nomura, Naohiko, Saito, Tatsumoto, and Okuyama, Shunki from 1909 to 1942. These data are the third largest holding (13%) of North Korean collections after Komarov, V.L and Nakai, T. A part of scientific report about the results of these expeditions had been published before, but the present publication set it sights on giving a first overview of the itineraries and the materials collected by five collectors in North Korea. Among these, Saito has by far the largest collection with 1,730 specimens, followed by five collectors in order with 1,067, 532, 510, 368 and 370 accessions by Mills, Nomura, Okuyama, Furumi, and Imai respectively.

The Design and Characteristics of the Inductive Coupler Using the Nanocrystalline Materials (나노 결정립 재료를 이용한 비접촉식 커플러의 설계 및 특성)

  • The varied heating temperatures were used for magnetic core materials, which nano sized ${\alpha}-Fe$ crystalline was created in nanocrystalline Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu materials, with hish permeability and low power loss. The highest permeability and lowest power loss were obtained to the specimen heat-treated at $510^{\circ}C$. The signal transmission characteristics of inductive coupler, which was manufactured by using the magnetic core materials prepared in this study, at low frequency range, was influenced strongly by magnetic property of magnetic core materials as this result is corresponding to the permeability as a function of heat treatment temperature, as well, it was improved by impedance matching at high frequency range. Over $500{\mu}m$ of air gap in coupler is required to maintain the magnetic properties without magnetic saturation on the subterranean line transferred hish current of 300 A. The inductive coupler for PLC, which has an attenuation characteristics of less than 5dB, was manufactured using nano-crystalline magnetic core materials through the above mentioned research results.

Comparative Study between Swamp Buffalo and Native Cattle in Feed Digestibility and Potential Transfer of Buffalo Rumen Digesta into Cattle

  • Rumen ecology plays an important role in the fermentation process and in providing end-products for ruminants. These studies were carried out to investigate variations in rumen factors namely pH, $NH_3-N$ and microorganisms in cattle and swamp buffaloes. Furthermore, studies on diurnal patterns of rumen fermentation and the effect of rumen digesta transfer from buffalo to cattle was conducted. Based on these studies, diurnal fermentation patterns in both cattle and buffaloes were revealed. It was found that rumen NH3-N was a major limiting factor. Rumen digesta transfer from buffalo to cattle from buffalo to cattle was achievable. Monitoring rumen digesta for 14d after transfer showed an improved rumen ecology in cattle as compared to that of original cattle and buffalo. It is probable that buffalo rumen digesta could be transferred. However, further research should be undertaken in these regards in order to improve rumen ecology especially for buffalo-based rumen.

Use of Dried Carrot Meal (DCM) in Laying Hen Diet for Egg Yolk Pigmentation

  • Dried carrot meal (DCM) prepared from fresh carrot was found to be a good source of xanthophyll (54 mg/kg) and morderate source of protein (188.3 g/kg) and energy (2,510 kcal/kg) with low level of fibre (80 g/kg). DM, EE and NFE content of DCM were 895, 35 and 661.7 g/kg respectively. The ingredient was used in laying hen diet to evaluate its pigmenting value for egg yolk. Thirty-two laying hens from Starcross strain were divided into four groups and fed four different diets: a control diet containing 62% ground wheat, a corn-based diet (50% ground yellow corn), control + 4% DCM and control + 8% DCM. Use of DCM at 8% level in layer mash significantly improved yolk colour at 3rd, 6th and 9th week of supplementation in comparison with wheat-based control diet. This improvement was statististically similar to that obtained from yellow corn-based diet. DCM at 4% level also improved yolk colour score. Wheat-based diet significantly increased feed consumption compared to yellow corn and diet supplied with 8% DCM. Body weight gain, egg production, feed conversion were not significantly affected due to dietary addition of DCM and no mortality was observed during 63-day experimental period. Further works on DCM are suggested.
