  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify the incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and risk factors for diseases in adults over 40 years of age in Korea, and to provide basic data for the prevention of COPD incidence through management. METHODS: Based on the 2019 data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 1,788 adults over the age of 40 who participated in pulmonary function test and health survey were selected as subjects. COPD incidence risk factors were analyzed using complex sample multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: As a result of the analysis, the incidence of COPD in Korea was 11.5%, and the risk of developing COPD was higher in men, age, and current smokers. Compared to women, men had an increased risk of developing COPD by 2.369 times (95% CI 1.289-4.355). In age, the risk of COPD incidence increased by 3.702-fold (95% CI 1.923-7.124) in their 50s, 11.238-fold (95% CI 6.009-21.017) in their 60s, and 28.320-fold (95% CI 14.328-55.977) in their 70s compared to those in their 40s. In the smoking state, 2.302 times (95% CI 1.373-3.860) of past smokers and 4.542 times (95% CI 2.694-7.658) of current smokers were found to have a higher risk of developing COPD than non-smokers. CONCLUSION: To reduce the incidence of COPD, interventions are required to prevent disease development through lifestyle and smoking cessation education in subjects with COPD risk factors.

  • In order to examine how Radiological Technologists perceive the oriental doctor's use of Medical Imaging Equipment, surveys were conducted for the members of the Korean Radiological Technologists Association. The total number of respondents were 515 and 481, with 34 insincere responses removed caused of nonvalidated answer. The results of the analysis are as follows. Although there were no statistical significance in the difference in perception by location of residence, work place, and educational background, respondents with higher education showed a tendency to agree on the use of comprehensive medical imaging equipment, but tended to oppose the use of special medical imaging equipment. Differences in perception by gender showed a greater negative perception toward the oriental doctor's use of medical imaging equipment by women than men. In particular, women showed more negative tendency for oriental doctor's use of special medical imaging equipment such as MRI, CT, and ultrasound equipment compared to men, and this was statistically significant. The difference in perception by age showed that the oriental doctor's use of medical imaging equipment was negative in the 20~30s, neutral in the 40~50s, and positive in the 60s, which were statistically significant. The difference in perception by work experience showed that the longer the work experience was, the more positive it was toward oriental doctor's use of medical imaging equipment. Specifically, the most favorable tendency was found with work experience of more than 30 years, which was statistically significant. The results of this study revealed the Radiological Technologists' perceptions on the oriental doctor's use of Medical Imaging Equipment and this can contribute to the direction of public health promotion in the future.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of seasons and weather on the volume of trauma patients in central Korea. Methods: The records of 4,665 patients treated at Chungbuk National Hospital Regional Trauma Center from January 2016 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Meteorological data including hourly temperature (℃), precipitation (mm), humidity (%), and wind speed (m/s) for each district were collected retrospectively. Statistical analysis was done using the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear regression analysis. Results: Patients' average age was 53.66 years, with a significant difference between men (49.92 years) and women (60.48 years) (p<0.001). Rolling/slipping down was a prominent cause of injury in winter (28.4%, n=283), with statistical significance (p<0.001). Trauma occurred least frequently in winter (p=0.005). Linear regression analysis revealed an increasing number of patients as the temperature increased (p<0.05), the humidity increased (p<0.001), and the wind speed decreased (p<0.001). Precipitation did not affect patient volume (p=0.562). One-way ANOVA revealed a decreased incidence of trauma when the temperature exceeded 30℃ (p<0.001), and when the humidity was more than 75%, compared to 25-50% and 50-75%. Conclusions: At the regional trauma center of Chungbuk National University Hospital, in central Korea, the number of trauma patients was lowest in winter, and patient volume was affected by temperature, humidity, and wind speed.

  • This study investigated the dietary behaviors and consumption of convenience foods among salaried men in Busan, Korea, and compared them based on the men's nutritional knowledge level. A questionnaire was developed based on the review of literatures and was distributed to 250 office workers in Busan in February 2013. A total of 224 data were used for the analyses. ${\chi}^2$-tests were employed for the nominal data while Mann-Whitney' U-tests were used for the ordinal data. Leven's tests were first performed before the t-tests for the interval data. Almost 60% of the respondents were female, 50% were in their 30s and 68% lived with other family members. The mean score of the nutritional knowledge test was 13.78 out of 20. Women and those who graduated from college or higher were likely to get a better score than men and those who graduated from high school or below. The respondents were divided into two groups for further analyses: Low (LK) vs. High (HK) knowledge score groups. LKs were more likely to consume 20 convenience foods than HKs. Although the respondents recognized the nutritional disadvantages of consuming convenience foods for an extended period, they continue to eat them because they lack time and further, it is quick and easy to consume convenience foods instead of preparing meals from scratch.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aging process on the immunity in human subjects. In this investigation, nineteen families of three generations (daughters on college age, their mothers, and grandmothers) participated to avoid genetic variation among individuals. Dietary food records, anthropometric measurements and biochemical assessments of serum nutrients were used to evaluate the nutritional status of subjects. The immune parameters of subjects were assessed by the total and differential WBC count. Total B and T lymphocytes, and T cell subsets were quantified by flowcytometer. Serum immunoglobulin G, A, M concentrations were also measured as an index of humoral immunity. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: 1. Along with the aging process, body fat was found to be increased whereas lean body mass and total body water were diminished. Since there were no significant difference in serum vitamin E levels in all age groups, serum retinal concentrations tended to decrease as one gets old. 2. Although total number of T lymphocytes seemed to be unchanged, B lymphocytes and NK cell numbers were increased by aging. The Percentage of CD8 + lymphocytes was lower in the elderly subjects compared with the younger, resulting in higher ratio of CD4 +/CD8 + lymphocytes in the elderly. Serum Ig G and Ig A levels remained unchanged, but IgM levels were significantly decreased as the age processes continue. Taking all together, it could be suggested that the alteration of immune cell population by aging is selective and possibly nonage factors such as nutrition may be attributable to the change of immunity in the elderly. The nutritional status and aging process may selectively affect both the cell-mediated (CD8 +, CD4 + CD8 + ratio, NK cell) and humoral (B lymphocyte, Immunoglobulin M, G) immune parameters in human subjects.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health state of the elderly in an effort to pave the way for dental health project planning for the elderly for the city of Jeonju and to help promote the oral health of the elderly population to which health care services weren't accessible a lot. The subjects in this study were 300 elderly people who were in their 60s and up and used 10 different welfare establishments for the elderly in Jeonju. A survey was conducted from May 3 through 13, 2005, by interviewing them in person, and the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. In terms of the period of oral health examination, 44.1 percent of the 66-70 age group, 48.1 percent of the elementary school graduates and 39.4 percent of the house owners had their teeth examined whenever they had a toothache. So their cycle of oral health examination was statistically significantly different according to age(p<.05), education(p<0.001) and form of residence(p<0.001). 2. Regarding the necessity of prosthesis, prosthesis was needed by 52.1 percent of the age group from 71 to 80, 44.3 percent of the women, 48.9 percent of the men, 60.0 percent of the community college graduates and 55.9 percent who rent a house on a deposit or monthly basis. But there was no statistically significant gap among the groups. 3. As for the necessity of oral health education, the necessity of it was absolutely supported by 89.7 percent of the 66-70 age group, 76.0 percent of the women, 87.2 percent of the men, 95.3 percent of the middle school graduates and 87.7 percent of the house owners. Their age(p<.0.01), gender(p<0.05) education(p<0.05) and form of residence(p<0.01) made a statistically significant difference to that. 4. Concerning oral health education experience, 79.3 percent of the high school graduates and 79.8 percent of the house owners had never received oral health education, and that experience statistically significantly varied with education(p<0.001) and form of residence (p<0.001). 5. As to the biggest reason for oral health care, 50.0 percent found it necessary to take care of their teeth to ensure their own perpetual oral health, and 33.7 percent felt the need for that because they had a toothache. The above-mentioned findings indicated that the elderly people were definitely in want of oral health education. Dental hygienists in public dental clinics should serve as dental health educators to address their needs, and regular oral health care programs should be prepared to spread awareness about the importance of oral health among elderly locals.
