  • The objective of this research study is to investigate the optimal process parameters of electrical discharge machining (EDM) on SCM440 steel with copper as a tool electrode. The effect of various process parameters on machining performance is investigated in this study. Modern ED machinery is capable of machining geometrically complex or hard material components, that are precise and difficult-to-machine such as heat treated tool steels, composites, super alloys, ceramics, etc. This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation by Taguchi method carried out to study the effects of machining parameters on material surface roughness in electric discharge machining of SCM440 steel. To predict the optimal condition, the experiments are conducted by using Taguchi's L27 orthogonal array. The work material was ED machined with copper electrodes by varying the pulsed current, pulse on-time, voltage, servo speed and spark speed. Investigations indicate that the surface roughness is strongly depend on pulsed current.

  • Due to the superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of TiAl alloy at high temperature, it has been utilized as a turbine wheel of a turbocharger. The dissimilar metallic bonding is usually applied to combine the TiAl turbine wheel with the SCM440 structural steel which is used as a driving shaft. In this study, the TiAl and SCM440 joint were fabricated by using a friction welding technique. During bonding process, to suppress the martensitic transformation and the formation of cracks, which might reduce a strength of the joints, Cu was used as an insert metal to relieve stress. As a result, the intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer was observed at TiAl/Cu interface while no IMC formation was formed at SCM440/Cu interface. Since understanding of the IMCs effects on the mechanical performance of welded joint is also essential for ensuring the reliability and integrity of the turbocharger system, we estimated the nanohardness of welded joint region through nanoindentation. The relation between the microstructural feature and its mechanical property is discussed in detail.

  • The effects of eight types of spheroidizing annealing conditions including annealing temperature, annealing time, cooling rate, and furnace atmosphere on the microstructure and hardeness were determined in SCM440 steel which has been widely used for automotive parts. The well-spheroidized structure and minimum hardness were obtained when the steel was heat-treated at $770^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, cooled to $720^{\circ}C$ at a cooling rate of $24^{\circ}C/h$, and then kept for 7 hours at the $720^{\circ}C$ followed by air cooling. In order to increase the productivity and to save the manufacturing cost, it is desirable to apply a faster cooling rate to the spheroidizing annealing. It was found that a cooling rate of $100^{\circ}C/hr$ was the fastest cooling rate applicable to the SCM440 steel among the four cooling rates used in this study. The microstructure consisted of ferrite and very fine spheroidized cementite when the steel was annealed for 13 hours at $720^{\circ}C$ below $A_{C1}$ temperature. This was caused by the short annealing time and the retarding effect of Cr and Mo on both the dissolution of pearlite to cementite and coarsening of spheroidized cementite. The steel heat treated in air showed the decarburized layer of about $125{\mu}m$ in thickness at the surface.

  • To develope the genetic source of oak wild silkworm, Antheraea yamamai, the cDNA library was constructed with poly A+ mRNA isolated from posterial silk gland of fifth instar larvae. Titer of the cDNA library was about 5.1$\times$105 pfu in total. We presumed that the titer covered almost all transcripts existed in Antherea yamamai. From cDNA library of Antheraea yamamai, fibroin heavy chain gene, which is specifically expressed from posterial silk gland of Antheraea yamamai, was screened using oligonuclotide probe specific to alanine rich motif of fibrin heavy chain gene of Antheraea pernyi. As a result, fibroin clones isolated from 5$\times$104 plaques showed the highest homolgy (95%) with that of Antherea pernyi in nucleotide of Anthereaea yamamai and Bombyx mori shows that there is no homologous sequence in the 3+ partial 채야후 region Genomic southern hybridization suggested that one copy is present. Northern hybridization showed that fibroin transcript was approximateely 9 kb in length.

  • The effect of pH on the corrosion characteristics in the dissimilar friction welded zone of IN713LC-SCM440 in the loaded torsional stress was studied. The corrosion experiment was performed for 120 hours on the specimens with five steps of pH. The surface corrosion pattern of the SCM440 area showed global corrosion and narrow pitting, which was caused by galvanic corrosion between friction welded IN713LC and SCM440, but corrosion did not proceeded from the IN713LC area. The average relative electrode potential gradually tends to decrease with the elapse of the immersion time in the acidity area. The average corrosion current also gradually tend to decrease The corrosion rate showed a larger value when the average relative electrode potential was higher and the average relative current was lower. The corrosion rate showed a larger value when the average relative electrode potential was higher in the acidity area, and it showed large when the average relative electrode potential was lower in the alkalinity area.

  • Electrowinning process in pyroprocessing recovers U (uranium) and TRU (Trans Uranium) elements simultaneously from spent fuels using a liquid cadmium cathode (LCC). When the solubility limit of U deposits over 2.35wt% in Cd, U dendrites were formed on the LCC surface during the electrodeposition at $500^{\circ}C$. Due to the high surface area of dendritic U, the deposits were not submerged into the liquid cadmium pool but grow out of the LCC crucible. Since the U dendrites act as a solid cathode, it prevents the co-deposition of U and TRUs. In this study, the electrodeposition of U onto a LCC was carried out at 440 and $500^{\circ}C$ to compare the morphology and component of U deposits. The U deposits at $440^{\circ}C$ have a specific shape and were stacked regularly at the center of the LCC pool, while the U dendrites (i.e., ${\alpha}$-phase) at $500^{\circ}C$ were grow out of the LCC crucible. Through the microscopic observation and XRD analysis, the electrodeposits at $440^{\circ}C$, which have a round shape, were identified as an intermetallic compound such as $UCd_{11}$. It can be concluded that the LCC electrowinning operation at $440^{\circ}C$ achieves the co-recovery of U and TRU without the formation of U dendrites.

  • GFRP rebar with ribs resemble those of deformed steel rebar was developed in 2005. It was reported that ribs of the GFRP rebar were sheared off due to the lower shear strength of polymer. In this study, the basic development length of the GFRP rebar was investigated through pull-out tests, models specified in ACI440.1R-03 and -06, and empirical model derived by Cosenza et al. (2002). As a results of pull-out tests, the critical embeddment length, which is defined as the length when failure mode is changed from pull-out to bar fracture, was 20 times of bar diameter for GFRP rebar and was 15 times for steel rebar. It is believed that the basic development of the GFRP rebar is 21 times of bar diameter, which is determined from the application of average bond strength into the model equation specified in ACI440.1R-03. Compared to the model equation in ACI440.1R-06, that in ACI440.1R-03 is recommendable for design purpose. The Cosenza et al.'s model underestimates the basic development length of the GFRP rebar.

  • The multi-axis combined machining technology has enabled combined machining, which was difficult. However, the reality is that manufacturing costs are rising due to expensive equipment and there is a shortage of machine operation engineers. The purpose of this research is to present the optimum cutting conditions for the surface roughness when processing the inner diameter of SUS440C, which is an egg material, using a CNC automatic lathe. As a result of measuring the surface roughness, dry machining was the best at Ra0.481㎛ at a spindle speed of 4,000rpm, a feed rate of 0.05rev/min, and a cutting depth of 0.3mm. In wet machining, the highest value was Ra0.317 at a spindle speed of 2,000 rpm, a feed rate of 0.05 rev/min, and a cutting depth of 0.2 mm. The lower the feed rate, the better surface roughness appears. It was found that the feed rate had more influence than the number of revolutions and depth of cut.

  • 440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content (${\sim}$0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the pitting corrosion in 3.5% NaCl were investigated through the electrochemical polarization tests. The lowest pitting potential, $E_p$, was obtained when austenitizing temperature was $1250^{\circ}C$ and this is because of the grain coarsening. When austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered at $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the highest $E_p$ was obtained at $350^{\circ}C$, while the lowest at $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ regardless of alloying elements added. But $E_p$ was increased a little at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ when 0.4 wt.% of tungsten was added. More pitting was observed at $450{\sim}550^{\circ}C$, and pitting was formed at regions where Cr concentration is low or grain boundaries are intersecting and showed irregular shape.
