  • Tensile and creep tests were performed at various temperatures to investigate the mechanical properties of plastics used in automotive instrument panels. Mechanical properties such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratios changed markedly with the test temperature. Three-point bending creep tests were performed for three kinds of plastics under four loading conditions. Coefficients in the time-hardening power law creep equation were obtained from the experiment, and the creep behavior was represented by a simple expression. The results of finite element creep analysis showed good agreement with the experimental results, while the difference between the numerical and experimental results increased with the load.

  • This study evaluated the support performance of fiber-net integrated shotcrete in tunnel support system developed for the purpose of improving constructability and stability while fully performing its mechanical performance as a tunnel support materials by four-point bending test, two-dimensional numerical analysis, and cross-sectional analysis. As a result of evaluating the flexural performance through a four-point bending test, in the case of fiber-net reinforced shotcrete, the tensile performance of fiber-net resulted in a continuous increase in load after crack occurrence, unlike steel fiber reinforced shotcrete. Also, the results of the tunnel cross-sectional structure analysis for ground conditions and the cross-sectional analysis of fiber-net and steel fiber reinforced shotcrete showed that sufficient support performance can be exhibited even if the thickness of fiber-net reinforced shotcrete was reduced compared to the previous one. Additionally, through these results, the support pattern of fiber-net integrated shotcrete in tunnel support system, which can be applied efficiently to the construction sections requiring higher stability among the rock mass class III, was proposed.

  • In order to improve Leak-Be(ore-Break methodology, more precisely the crack growth evaluation, a round robin analysis was proposed by the CEA Saclay. The aim of this analysis was to evaluate the crack initiation life, penetration life and shape of through wall crack under cyclic bending loads. The proposed round robin analysis is composed of three main topic; fatigue crack initiation, crack propagation and crack penetration. This paper deals with the first topic, crack initiation in a notched pipe under four point bending. Both elastic-plastic finite element analysis and Neuber's rule were used to estimate the crack initiation life and the finite element models were verified by mesh-refinement, stress distribution and global deflection. In elastic-plastic finite element analysis, crack initiation life was determined by strain amplitude at the notch tip and strain-life curve of the material. In the analytical method, Neuber's rule with the consideration of load history and mean stress effect, was used for the life estimation. The effect of notch tip radius, strain range, cyclic hardening rule were examined in this study. When these results were compared with the experimental ones, the global deformation was a good agreement but the crack initiation cycle was higher than the experimental result.

  • Fracture behavior of a monolithic PZT and a plate-type piezoelectric composite actuator (PCA) has been investigated under a bending load at three points by an acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. AE signal from a monolithic PZT at the maximum bending load shows the characteristics of high amplitude and long duration with a low frequency band of $100{\sim}230kHz$ which is confirmed by fast Fourier transform (FFT). For a PCA, it is concluded that AE signals with high amplitude over 80dB and low dominant frequency band of $170{\sim}223kHz$ emitted in the stage I are due to the brittle fracture in the PZT layer and the delamination between the PZT layer and the adjacent fiber composite layer. Based on the above analysis of AE behavior and damage observations with an optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscopy, AE characteristics related to fracture behavior of asymmetrically laminated PCA have been elucidated.

  • The damage zone around a crack tip occurring before the fracture is a significant domain. which affects the toughening mechanism of materials. In this study. the growth process of damage zone in the vicinity of crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated using an acoustic emission(AE) analysis. The weight fractions of rubber(CTBN 1300$\times$B) in rubber-modified epoxy resin are 5 wt% and 15 wt%. The fracture toughness($K_{IC}$) and the fracture energy($G_{IC}$) were measured using 3 point bending single-edge notched specimens. The damage zone and rubber particles distributed around the crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope(AFM). The damage zone around crack tip of rubber-modified epoxy resin was formed at 13 % loading and developed until 57 % loading of the fracture load. The crack initiated at 57 % loading grew repeatedly in the stick-slip propagation behavior. Based on time-frequency analysis, it was confirmed that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15~0.20 MHz and 0.20~0.30 MHz were generated from cavitation and stable/unstable cracking inside the damage zone.

  • Of various design factors affecting icebreaking capability of an icebreaker, the stem angle(i.e., angle between bow stem and ice sheet) is the most important one under continuous icebreaking operation. This study focuses on the relationship between the bow stem angle of an icebreaker and its icebreaking capability. Considering relatively high loading-rate conditions with typical advancing speed of 3 to 4 knots, the material properties and deformation characteristics of sea ice are regarded as entirely elastic and brittle. In this paper the interaction process of icebreaker with level ice is simplified as a beam of finite length supported by Winkler-type elastic foundation simulating water buoyancy. The wedge type ice beam is loaded by the vertical impact forces due to the inclined bow stem of icebreaking vessels. The numerical model provides locations of maximum bending moment where extreme tensile stress arises and also possible fracture occurs. The model can predict a characteristic length of broken ice sheet upon the given environmental and design parameters.

  • Four-point bending tests were performed to investigate the interfacial adhesion of Cu-Cu bonding fabricated by thermo-compression process for three dimensional packaging. A pair of Cu-coated Si wafers was bonded under a pressure of 15 kN at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, followed by post annealing at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The bonded wafers were diced into $30\;mm\;{\times}\;3\;mm$ pieces for the test. Each specimen had a $400-{\mu}m$-deep notch along the center. An optical inspection module was installed in the testing apparatus to observe crack initiation at the notch and crack propagation over the weak interface. The tests were performed under a fixed loading speed, and the corresponding load was measured. The measured interfacial adhesion energy of the Cu-to-Cu bonding was $9.75\;J/m^2$, and the delaminated interfaces were analyzed after the test. The surface analysis shows that the delamination occurred in the interface between $SiO_2$ and Ti.

  • In this study, evaluation of acoustic emission signals characteristics for the post weld heat treated (PWHT) multi-pass weldment and weldment was dealt. Charpy standard specimens were taken from the lowest, middle and highest regions of the weld block. Pre-crack was made using the repeated load. Four point bend and AE tests were conducted simultaneously. Regardless of the specimens, AE signals were absent within elastic region and produced in the process of plastic deformation. AE signals for all specimens were not emitted after the maximum load. Value of signal strength for the all PWHT specimens was lower than that of the weldment. Besides, relations of plastic deformation zone size and accumulated AE counts for the PWHT specimens were more simple compared with the weldment. In case of the PWHT specimen, particles on the fractured surface decreased prominently compared with the weldment due.to PWHT. From these results, it can be concluded that PWHT was effective in reducing the AE sources for the weldment.

  • The acoustic emission (AE) behavior of reinforced concrete beams tested under flexural loading was investigated to characterize and identify the source of damage. This research was aimed at identifying the characteristic AE response associated with micro-crack development, localized crack propagation, corrosion, and debonding of the reinforcing steel. Concrete beams were prepared to isolate the damage mechanisms by using plain, notched-plain, reinforced, and corroded-reinforced specimens. The beams were tested using four-point cyclic step-loading. The AE response was analyzed to obtain key parameters such as the time history of AE events, the total number and rate of AE events, and the characteristic features of the waveform. Initial analysis of the AE signal has shown that a clear difference in the AE response is observed depending on the source of the damage. The Felicity ratio exhibited a correlation with the overall damage level, while the number of AE events during unloading can be an effective criterion to estimate the level of corrosion distress in reinforced concrete structures. Consequently, AE measurement characterization appears to provide a promising approach for estimating the level of deterioration in reinforced concrete structure.
