The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behaviour of the plastic deformed zone at crack tip on the standard Charpy specimens which were taken from the multi-passed weld block of the pressure vessel steel. Notch was machined on the standard Charpy test specimens and pre-crack which was located around the fusion line was made under the repeat load. Four point bend and acoustic emission tests were carried out simultaneously. The size of plastic region at crack tip was calculated using stress intensity factor. Relationships between characteristics of acoustic emission and plastic zone size at crack tip were discussed through the cumulative AE energy. Regardless of the specimens, AE signals were absent within the elastic region almost and most of AE signals were produced at the plastic deformation region from yield point to the mid-point between yield and maximum load. More AE signals for the weldment were produced compared with the base-metal and PWHT specimen. Relations between plastic deformed zones at crack tip and cumulative AE energy for the weldment and PWHT specimen were different quietly from the base-metal. Besides, number of AE counts for the weldment was the larger than those of the base-metal and PWHT specimen.
To estimate the characteristics of Korean Ni-Ti alloy orthodontic wire, this study investigated compositions, tensile properties, bending properties, heat treatment effects, and ion releasing degrees, and compared these characteristics to those of the imported Ni-Ti alloy wire. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. Ti and -Ni elements in ORTHOLLOY were in a range showing superelasticity, and there was a little difference in the Ni and Ti contents of ORTHOLLOY as compared with those of SENTALLOY. 2. The results of the tensile test concerning ORTHOLLOY exhibited a superelastic effect, indicating an area of a definite amount of stress in spite of the changes in the range from $2\%\;to\;8\%$ in the strain rate. 3. ORTHOLLOY presented higher load values than SENTALLOY in the same deflection values when the wire was tested in three-point bending. A load range displaying a superelastic effect was 80-l00g, 140-l80g, and 130-200g respectively, in wire diameters of 0.014', 0.016', and 0.018' 4. By heat treatments at $400^{\circ}C$ and at $500^{\circ}C$, a load range showing the effect of superelasticitly was lessened by the duration of the heat treatment time. The superelastic effect was destroyed as a result of the 10 minutes heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$. 5. The quantity of the Ni ion released from ORTHOLLOY, tended to be greater than the amount of released Ni ion in SENTALLOY. The Co ion released was very little(<0.01ppm) in SENTALLOY and ORTHOLLOY irrespective of the lapse of time. Released Ni ions on the 1st day were at the maximum, and the releasing rate showed plateaus after three days. 6. The surface morphology of SENTALLOY was relatively regular irrespective of the lapse of rime, and the corrosion tendency was not observed. However, the surface morphology of ORTHOLLOY was rather irregular and shelved fitting corrosion after immersion.

This paper deals with the development of bonded joints for fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) hull structures using moulding-in concept. Focus is placed on bonded in-plane connections between two adjacent panels that could form the boundaries of hull structural module. Traditional construction in FRP hull structures requires the construction of a mould, usually from steel or aluminium. In this construction the FRP materials are laid in the mould, and resin is saturated, and then the structural member is cured. This is expensive since it involves the fabrication of metal hull mould for every different hull type, which is sacrificed after the production of the FRP ship. One way of encouraging greater use of FRP in ship construction is to investigate the possible construction of FRP hull structures in a similar manner to metallic ships, that is in terms of blocks or modules. Such a manner of construction would eliminate the need for expensive hull moulds permitting greater flexibility in the construction of FRP ships. The main issue then would be the design and construction of adequate bonded connections between adjacent panels. To fulfill this object, the simplified and automated way of manufacturing joint edge shapes for bonded joints is developed, and their structural assessment is performed in both experimentally and numerically.
The effect of h-BN content on microstructure, mechanical properties, and machinability of AlN-BN based machinable ceramics were investigated. The relative density of sintered compact decreased with increasing h-BN content. The four-point flexural strength also decreased from 238 MPa of monolith up to 182 MPa by the addition of 30 vol% h-BN. Both low Young's modulus and residual tensile stress, formed by the thermal expansion coefficient difference between AIN and h-BN, might cause the strength drop in AlN-BN composite. The crack deflection, and pull-out phenomena increased by the plate-like h-BN. However, the fracture toughness decreased with h-BN content. The second phases, consisted of YAG and ${\gamma}$-Al$_2$O$_3$, were formed by the reaction between Al$_2$O$_3$ and Y$_2$O$_3$. During end-milling process, feed and thrust forces measured for AlN-(10~30) vol% BN composites decreased with increasing h-BN particles, showing excellent machinability. Also, irrespective of h-BN content, relatively good surfaces with roughness less than 0.5 m (Ra) could be achieved within short lapping time.

The quantitative measurement of interfacial adhesion energy (Gc) of multilayer thin films for Cu interconnects was investigated using a double cantilever beam (DCB) and 4-point bending (4-PB) test. In the case of a sample with Ta diffusion barrier applied, all Gc values measured by the DCB and 4-PB tests were higher than 5 J/㎡, which is the minimum criterion for Cu/low-k integration without delamination. However, in the case of the Ta/Cu sample, measured Gc value of the DCB test was lower than 5 J/㎡. All Gc values measured by the 4-PB test were higher than those of the DCB test. Measured Gc values increase with increasing phase angle, that is, 4-PB test higher than DCB test due to increasing plastic energy dissipation and roughness-related shielding effects, which matches well interfacial fracture mechanics theory. As a result of the 4-PB test, Ta/Cu and Cu/Ta interfaces measured Gc values were higher than 5 J/㎡, suggesting that Ta is considered to be applicable as a diffusion barrier and a capping layer for Cu interconnects. The 4-PB test method is recommended for quantitative adhesion energy measurement of the Cu interconnect interface because the thermal stress due to the difference in coefficient of thermal expansion and the delamination due to chemical mechanical polishing have a large effect of the mixing mode including shear stress.

Composites are the most useful restorative material. However, composites have some disadvantages such as polymerization shrinkage, long working time, and susceptibility to water and contamination, which are stood out more especially when treating children. To solve these problems, bulk-fill composites have been developed. The aim of this study is to compare mechanical properties of bulk-fill and conventional composites. Bulk-fill composites (SureFil SDR flow (SDR), Tetric N-Ceram bulk fill (TBF)) and conventional composites (Filtek Z-350 (Z-350), Unifil Flow (UF), Unifil Loflo Plus (UL)) were used. The Vickers hardness tester was used to measure the microhardness of materials, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure the degree of conversion. Polymerization shrinkage was measured by using a linometer. Flexural and compressive properties were measured by using the universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Scheffe's post hoc test. The level of significance was set to p < 0.05. Most conventional composites showed higher microhardness than bulk-fill composites. However, bulk-fill composites showed a higher top/bottom microhardness ratio than conventional composites. Bulk-fill composites showed a higher top/bottom degree of conversion ratio than conventional composites. The polymerization shrinkage was highest in UL and lowest in Z-350. The polymerization shrinkage of flowable composites was higher than that of non flowable composites. The compressive properties were highest in Z-350 and lowest in SDR and UL. In terms of flexural properties, Z-350 was the highest. However, none of the bulk-fill composites exhibited mechanical properties as good as those of conventional composites. Nonetheless, the ratio of microhardness and degree of conversion, which are important properties of bulk filling, were higher in bulk-fill composites. Therefore, the bulk-fill composites might be considered suitable restorative materials in pediatric dentistry.

A technology platform for wafer-level three-dimensional integration circuits (3D-ICs) is presented, and that uses wafer bonding with low-k polymeric adhesives and Cu damascene inter-wafer interconnects. In this work, one of such technical platforms is explained and characterized using a test vehicle of inter-wafer 3D via-chain structures. Electrical and mechanical characterizations of the structure are performed using continuously connected 3D via-chains. Evaluation results of the wafer bonding, which is a necessary process for stacking the wafers and uses low-k dielectrics as polymeric adhesive, are also presented through the wafer bonding between a glass wafer and a silicon wafer. After wafer bonding, three evaluations are conducted; (1) the fraction of bonded area is measured through the optical inspection, (2) the qualitative bond strength test to inspect the separation of the bonded wafers is taken by a razor blade, and (3) the quantitative bond strength is measured by a four point bending. To date, benzocyclobutene (BCB), $Flare^{TM}$, methylsilsesquioxane (MSSQ) and parylene-N were considered as bonding adhesives. Of the candidates, BCB and $Flare^{TM}$ were determined as adhesives after screening tests. By comparing BCB and $Flare^{TM}$, it was deduced that BCB is better as a baseline adhesive. It was because although wafer pairs bonded using $Flare^{TM}$ has a higher bond strength than those using BCB, wafer pairs bonded using BCB is still higher than that at the interface between Cu and porous low-k interlevel dielectrics (ILD), indicating almost 100% of bonded area routinely.

Purpose: Ni-Cr alloy does not contain Beryllium, causing the metal compound to form oxides in the furnace but by using Titanium as a chemical catalyst the forming of the oxides can be controlled, and by controlling the impurities formed on the metal surface, the possibility of the Ni-Cr alloy bond strength being increased can be analysed. Materials and Methods: Titanium was used as a chemical catalyst in the porcelain for the oxidation of beryllium-free metal (Ni-Cr) alloy. The T1 group, which does not use Titanium power as a chemical catalyst is a reference model for comparison. The T2 group and T3 group used 10 g and 20 g of Titanium power, respectively. They are fabricated to observe the shear bond strength and surface properties. There was no significance when One-way ANOVA analysis/Tukey Honestly Significant Difference Test was conducted for statistical analysis among groups (P > 0.05). Results: Results of measuring the three-point flexural bond strength of the Ni-Cr alloy and thickness of the oxide film. Experiment T3 using 20 g Titanium chemical catalyst: $39.22{\pm}3.41MPa$ and $6.66{\mu}m$, having the highest bond strength and thinness of oxide film. Experiment T2 using 10 g Titanium chemical catalyst: $34.65{\pm}1.39MPa$ and $13.22{\mu}m$. Experiment T1 using no Titanium chemical catalyst: $32.37{\pm}1.91MPa$ and $22.22{\mu}m$. Conclusion: The T2 and T3 experiments using Titanium chemical catalyst showed higher bond strength for the Ni-Cr alloy and lower thickness of oxide film than experiment T1, and the titanium catalyst being able to increase bond strength was observed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the fluoride release and some mechanical properties including 3-point bending strength, amount of abrasion, surface hardness, water sorption/solubility and cytotoxicity of the newly developed composite resins containing 8, 16, 24 wt% $SrF_2$ glass filler (VF8, VF16, VF24) and four commercially available composite resins, Heliomolar(HE), Verdonfil(VE), Z100(ZH) and Aelitefil(AE). To investigate cytotoxic effect, agar overlay assay was done. Amount of fluoride released into distilled water was measured over a 62-days period from VF8, VF16, VF24 and HE. Results were as follows: 1. Experimental composite resins showed similar mechanical properties to commercial composite resins, but 3-point bending strength and surface hardness of experimental composite resins were inferior to ZH. 2. Over a 62-day Period, the amount of fluoride released was ordered: VF24>VF16>VF8>HE. In experimental composite resins, the amount of fluoride released was 9-23 times greater than HE and seemed to be proportional to the content of $SrF_2$ glass filler. 3. Experimental composite resins and all control composite resins showed mild cytotoxicity. This study showed significantly greater fluoride release from newly developed composite resins than control(HE) and addition of $SrF_2$ glass filler did not decrease mechanical properties or increase cytotoxicity of composite resin. The results from this study imply that newly developed composite resin have adequate mechanical properites, mild cytotoxicity and some potential for secondary caries prevention.
