  • Due to the increasing demand of network convergence, in future, hybrid/integrated satellite and terrestrial systems will play an important role. In that case, compatibilities between the satellite and terrestrial systems are very important for efficiency of the systems. 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is one of the 4G system. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce the design of interleaver for mobile satellite system based 3GPP LTE specification. The 4G system including the LTE specification adopted adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes for efficient usage of resources, and the updating interval of resource allocation is an order of msec. However, because of the long round trip delay of satellite systems, we cannot employ the same AMC scheme specified for the terrestrial system, and thus it cannot effectively counteract to short term fadings. Therefore, in order to overcome these problems, we propose an interleaver scheme combined with AMC. We present the interleaver design results considering mobile satellite system based on the LTE and analyze the simulation results.

  • Lee and Kim(1980) reported seven geogrphical variation types of G. sobaegensis from South Korea. Extensively reexamining the speciemsns of variation type 2 , type 3 and type 7 collected at various localities, the authors found that three of them were not variation types but distinct new species , and named G.kyonggiensis and G. wangganensis , These two new species are fully described with illustrations and their distribution is also given.

  • We present space-based near-IR (NIR) and optical photometry of globular clusters (GCs) of 16 early-type galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo Clusters. The NIR imaging data for the nearby galaxies was acquired with the IR Channel of the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3/IR) in the F110W ($J_{110}$) and F160W ($H_{160}$) bandpasses. We introduce the full sample of our WFC3/IR program, describe data reductions and photometric measurements including GC candidate selection criteria, and then show selected GCs' color-magnitude diagrams. The tilted features in the diagrams related to the morphological types of host galaxies are discussed in the context of galaxy formation and evolution histories. Combining F475W ($g_{475}$) and F850LP ($z_{850}$) data taken from the Advanced Camera for Surveys Virgo and Fornax Cluster Surveys with our NIR data, we investigate the bimodality in optical-NIR color distribution and the nonlinear feature of the optical-NIR color relation as a function of optical color for these extragalactic GC systems.

  • Recent studies suggest that the difference between global and local properties of galaxies (the local-global environmental (LoG) bias) might be important in the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) host galaxy studies. Obtaining local spectroscopic properties of hosts at high redshift, however, is challenging. Here we will introduce a more efficient way to conduct this study by only using photometric data. We find that when we restrict a sample to the hosts whose stellar mass is less than $10^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$, a sample without LoG bias is efficiently selected. From the sample without LoG bias, we confirm that SNe Ia in locally star-forming environment are $0.103{\pm}0.010mag$ and $0.085{\pm}0.012mag$ fainter than those in locally passive region, for MLCS2k2 and SALT2, respectively. Because of ~6 times larger sample that covers much wider redshift range, our results are far more significant statistically, $10.3{\sigma}$ for MLCS2k2 and $7.1{\sigma}$ for SALT2, than previous results.

  • Galaxy morphology involves complex effects from both secular and non-secular evolution of galaxies. Although it is a final product of galaxy evolution, it gives a clue to the processes that the a galaxy has gone through. Galaxy clusters are the sites where the most massive galaxies are found, and thus the most dramatic merger histories are embedded. Our deep imaging program (${\mu}{\sim}28\;mag\;arcsec^{-2}$), KASI-Yonsei Deep Imaging Survey for Clusters (KYDISC), targets 14 Abell clusters at z = 0.016 - 0.14 using IMACS/Magellan telescope and MegaCam/CFHT to investigate cluster galaxies especially on low surface brightness features related to galaxy interactions. We visually classify galaxy morphology based on criteria related to secular or merger related evolution and find that the morphological mixture of galaxies varies considerably from cluster to cluster. Moreover it depends on the characteristics (e.g. cluster mass) of cluster itself which implies that environmental effects in cluster scale is also an important factor to the evolution of galaxies together with intrinsic (secular) and galaxy merger. Our deep imaging survey for morphological inspection of cluster galaxies with low surface brightness is expected to be a useful basis to understand the nature of cluster galaxies and their internal/external evolutionary path.

  • Galaxy morphology is involved complex effects of both secular and non-secular evolution of galaxies. Although it is a final product of a galaxy evolution, it may give a clue for the process that the galaxy suffer. Galaxy clusters are the sites where the most massive galaxies are found, and the most dramatic merger histories are embedded. Morphology study in nearby universe, e.g. Virgo cluster, is well established, but for clusters at z ~ 0.1 it is only focused on bright galaxies due to observational limits. Our optical deep imaging of 14 Abell clusters at z = 0.014 - 0.16 using IMACS f/2 on a Magellan Badde 6.5-m telescope and MegaCam on a 3.8-m CFHT enable to classify detailed morphology. For the galaxies in our data, we investigated their morphology with several criteria related to secular or merger related evolution. Our research on detailed morphology of thousands of galaxies through deep imaging would give a general census of cluster galaxies and help to estimate the evolution of cluster galaxies.

  • Five different calibrations of metal abundances of globular clusters are examined and these are compared with metallicity ranking parameters such as $(Sp)_c$, . Q39 and IR-indices. Except for the calibration $[Fe/H]_H$ by the high dispersion echelle analysis. the other calibration scales are correlated with the morphological parameters of red giant branch. In the $[Fe/H]_H$-scale. the clusters later than ${\sim}F8$ have nearly a constant metal abundance. $[Fe/H]_H{\simeq}-1.05$, regradless of morphological characteristics of horizontal branch and red giant branch. By the two fundamental calibration scales of $[Fe/H]_L$ (derived by the low dispersion analysis) and $[Fe/H]_{{\Delta}s}$ (derived by the spectral analysis of RR Lyrae stars). the globular clusters are divided into the halo clusters with [Fe/H]<-1.0 and the disk clusters confined within the galactocentric distance ${\tau}_G=10\;kpc$ and galactic plane distance |z|=3 kpc. In this case the abundance gradient is given by d[Fe/H]/$dr_G{\approx}-0.05\;kpc^{-1}$ and d[Fe/H]/$d|z|{\simeq}-0.08\;kpc^{-1}$ within ${\tau}_G=20\;kpc$ and |z|=10 kpc, respectively. According to these characteristics of the spatial distribution of globular clusters. the chemical evolution of the galactic globular clusters can be accounted for by the two-zone (disk-halo) slow collapse model when the $[Fe/H]_L$-or $[Fe/H]_{{\Delta}s}$-scale is applied. In the case of $[Fe/H]_H$-scale, the one-zone fast collapse model is preferred for the evolution of globular clusters.

  • As the demand for smart phone user is rapidly increasing in recent years, the development of new mobile communication system which provides more improved quality compared to existing 3G standard is highly requested. In this point, the long-term evolution (LTE) system, which was being developed in mid of 2000's, has attracted a considerable attention. The LTE has been developed continuously to result a release 10 which is called as LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) in 2010. Among various features in LTE-A, the multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) design is expected to give better quality for throughput, spectral efficiency, and latency. In this paper, we first review the development process from LTE to LTE-A. We also provide the overview of design challenges and specific solutions for MU-MIMO systems developed in LTE-Advanced standard.
