This study numerically examined the maximum wind pressure distribution of a billboard on the roof of a middle-rise building. The deformation caused by the maximum wind pressure was examined. For the numerical analysis, the signboard was assumed to be installed on $(b)20m{\times}(d)10m{\times}(h)$ buildings. The maximum wind pressure was measured using four models with the standard model and different sizes of the signboard. The numerical analysis showed that the horizontal deformation predominantly occurs as the shape of the signboard becomes closer to a rectangle, and high wind pressure and deformation occur at the corners of both ends. As the height of the signboard increases, vertical deformation predominantly occurs, and static pressure forms on the backside. When the height is lower than the width of the signboard, the wind pressure is concentrated on the center of the roof. Therefore, the distribution of the maximum wind pressure is stable, and the effect of the wind pressure is relatively low as the height-to-width ratio approaches 1.
This paper presents the minimum submergence depth of an underwater vehicle that can remove the effect of free surface on the resistance of the underwater vehicle. The total resistance of the underwater vehicle in fully submerged modes comprises only viscous pressure and friction resistances, and no wave resistance should be present, based on the free surface effect. In a model test performed in this study, the resistance is measured in the range of 2 to 10 kn (1.03-5.14 m/s) under depth conditions of 850 mm (2.6D) and 1250 mm (3.8D), respectively, and the residual resistance coefficients are compared. Subsequently, resistance analysis is performed via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation to investigate the free surface effect based on various submergence depths. First, the numerical analysis results in the absence of free surface conditions and the model test results are compared to show the tendency of the resistance coefficients and the reliability of the CFD simulation results. Subsequently, numerical analysis results of submergence depth presented in a reference paper are compared with the model test results. These two sets of results confirm that the resistance increased due to the free surface effect as the high speed and depth approach the free surface. Therefore, to identify a fully submerged depth that is not affected by the free surface effect, case studies for various depths are conducted via numerical analysis, and a correlation for the fully submerged depth based on the Froude number of an underwater vehicle is derived.

Multi-dimensional coupling analysis is a research hot spot in nuclear reactor thermal hydraulic study and both the full-scale system transient response and local key three-dimensional thermal hydraulic phenomenon could be obtained simultaneously, which can achieve the balance between efficiency and accuracy in the numerical simulation of nuclear reactor. A one-dimensional to three-dimensional (1D-3D) coupling platform for the nuclear reactor multi-dimensional analysis is developed by XJTU-NuTheL (Nuclear Thermal-hydraulic Laboratory at Xi'an Jiaotong University) based on the CFD code Fluent and system code RELAP5 through the Dynamic Link Library (DLL) technology and Fluent user-defined functions (UDF). In this paper, the International Standard Problem (ISP) No. 43 is selected as the benchmark and the rapid boron dilution transient in the nuclear reactor is studied with the coupling code. The code validation is conducted first and the numerical simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data. The three-dimensional flow and temperature fields in the downcomer are analyzed in detail during the transient scenarios. The strong reverse flow is observed beneath the inlet cold leg, causing the de-borated water slug to mainly diffuse in the circumferential direction. The deviations between the experimental data and the transients predicted by the coupling code are also discussed.
Friction stir welding(FSW) was studied using commercial tool, FLOW-3D. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method to apply frictional heat in Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Cylindrical tool shape was used, and the interface cells between tool surface and workpiece were tracked by its geometrical relations in order to consider the frictional heat in FSW. After tracking the interface cells, average area concept was used to calculate the frictional heat, which is related to interface area. Also three-dimensional heat source and visco-plastic flow were modeled. The frictional heat generation rate calculated numerically from the suggested algorithm was validated with the analytical solution. The numerical solution was well matched with the analytical solution, and the maximum percentage of error was around 3%.

The implementation and validation of multi-dimensional (multi-D) features in thermal-hydraulic system codes aims to extend the application of these codes towards multi-scale simulations. The main goal is the simulation of large-scale three-dimensional effects inside large volumes such as piping or vessel. This novel approach becomes especially relevant during the simulation of accidents with strongly asymmetric flow conditions entailing density gradients. Under such conditions, coolant mixing is a key phenomenon on the eventual variation of the coolant temperature and/or boron concentration at the core inlet and on the extent of a local re-criticality based on the reactivity feedback effects. This approach presents several advantages compared to CFD calculations, mainly concerning the model size and computational efforts. However, the range of applicability and accuracy of the newly implemented physical models at this point is still limited and needs to be further extended. This paper aims at contributing to the validation of the multi-D features of the system code ATHLET based on the simulation of the Tests 1.1 and 2.1, conducted at the test facility ROCOM. Overall, the multi-D features of ATHLET predict reasonably well the evolution from both experiments, despite an observed overprediction of coolant mixing at the vessel during both experiments.
The noise and vibration sources of rotary compressor for room air-conditioner are pressure pulsation of compression process, cavity resonance of inner space, structural radiation noise of shell and impact noise of discharge valve. Among them, pressure pulsation is very important noise and vibration source. Because it transferred various kinds of noise and vibration like as mentioned above. In this reason, muffler and resonator are used in order to absorb and remove these noises. But an analytical prediction using acoustic analysis does not coincident with the experimental result. The difference between analysis and actual state is due to the assumption of analysis. This paper covered with new concept of muffler design based on the turbulence kinetic energy of flow by using CFD. From this analysis, it is possible to decide the best position of discharge port of muffler. Therefore $2{\sim}3dB$ noise reduction effect is acquired in rotary compressor of 5000 BTU grade. Also new approach of resonator design is suggested. From this study, the characteristics of resonator and surge hole (a kind of resonator without pipe length) are identified. The former is useful for pure tone noise (narrow frequency band), and the latter is effective for broad frequency band. This paper shows that it is very available to use 3 dimensional analysis of resonator in order to predict more exact tuning frequency. The result is proved by a lot of experiments. From combination of fluid analysis and acoustic analysis, up stream position is effective location of resonator concerning turbulence motion of fluid.

This study reviewed the capturing performance of a canopy hood used in some melting processes of a casting manufacturing factory through a site survey. In addition, this study compared and evaluated the flow field and pressure field for the plans to enhance the hazardous air pollutants collection capacity by using CFD model. The case-2(flange attached + double hood) can be improved in terms of collection performance, but is expected to increase in hood static pressure by about 70% more than the existing structure, so it was shown that its site applicability is not good. It is judged that the shape of case-3(flange attached + double cone attached) is most suitable to improve the suction efficiency. This is because a double cone is installed at the center of the opening to concentrate the flow rate on the edge of the hood and control the hume rising to the center of the hood without a static pressure rise via the slope of the cone.

The 3D structure of GDL for fuel cells was measured using high-resolution X-ray tomography in order to study material transport in the GDL. A computational algorithm has been developed to remove noise in the 3D image and construct 3D elements representing carbon fibers of GDL, which were used for both structural and fluid analyses. Changes in the pore structure of GDL under various compression levels were calculated, and the corresponding volume meshes were generated to evaluate the anisotropic permeability of gas within GDL as a function of compression. Furthermore, the transfer of liquid water and reactant gases was simulated by using the volume of fluid (VOF) and pore-network model (PNM) techniques. In addition, the simulation results of liquid water transport in GDL were validated by analogous experiments to visualize the diffusion of fluid in porous media. Through this research, a procedure for simulating the material transport in deformed GDL has been developed; this will help in optimizing the clamping force of fuel cell stacks as well as in determining the design parameters of GDL, such as thickness and porosity.
Recently, stream flow analysis has been accomplished by one or two dimensional equations and was applied by simple momentum equations and fixed energy conservations which contain many condition limits. In this study, FLOW-3D using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) was applied to stream flow analysis which can solve three dimensional RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Equation) control equation to find out physical behaviors and the effect of hydraulic structures. Numerical simulation accomplished those results was compared by using turbulence models such as ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$, RNG (Renormalized Group) ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and LES (Large Eddy Simulation). Numerical analysis results have been illustrated by the turbulence energy effects, velocity of flow, water level pressure and eddy flows around the piers and transverse overflow type structures. These results will be able to used by basis data that catch hold of effects on long-term bed elevation changes, sediment accumulations, scours and water aggravations by removal of obsolete transverse over flow type structures in urban stream.
