  • An application of the KFLOW3D code which has been developed at KAIST is presented. This paper briefly describes the underlying methodology and summarizes the results for the DLR-F6 transport configuration recently presented in the second AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop held in Orlando, FL, June 2003. KFLOW3D is a parallelized Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solver for multi-block structured grids. For the present computations, 2-equation k-$\omega$ WD+ nonlinear eddy viscosity model is used. The emphasis of the paper is placed on the implementation of the k-$\omega$ WD+ model in the multigrid framework and practicality of KFLOW3D for accurately predicting not only the integrated aerodynamic property such as the drag coefficient but pressure distributions.

  • For two kinds of the multi-stage centrifugal pump with diffuser vanes and return channel vanes the meanline performance prediction is applied to get information of hydraulic performance at each internal flow station, because only flange-to-flange test curves are available. As a first step of redesign fur higher efficiency, the impeller geometry is numerically investigated in the present study. Quasi-3D inviscid loading distributions are obtained, for the two impellers, using the state-of-the-art method of impeller 3D design, which provides a guide to optimal redesign. Full 3D turbulent flow fields are thereafter analyzed, using the specialized CFD code, to confirm the redesign results. The inherent limitation of the traditional graphic method of impeller design, which most of domestic pump manufacturers are now employing, is found.

  • Two high resolution compressive schemes, CICSAM(Ubbink, 1997) and HRIC(Muzaferija & Peric, 1999), in interface capturing method are reviewed briefly with respect to the extended forms suitable for unstructured meshes. And then those are applied to three typical test cases of translation test, shearing flow test and collapsing water problem with an obstacle. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results show that CICSAM is better than HRIC with respect to accuracy and robustness, although either scheme can be used as a good choice for free surface or two-phase flow simulation.

  • Mean concentrations of ammonia gas released as a tracer from an isolated low-rise building have been measured and predicted. Predictions were calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and two dispersion models: a diffusion model and a Lagrangian particle tracking technique. Explicit account was taken of the natural variation of wind direction by a technique based on the weighted summation of individual steady state wind direction results according to the probability density function of the wind direction. The results indicated that at distances >3 building heights downstream the weighted predictions from either model are satisfactory but that in the near wake the diffusion model is less successful. Weighted solutions give significantly improved predictions over unweighted results. Lack of plume spread is identified as the main cause of inaccuracies in predictions and this is linked to inadequate resolution of flow features and mixing in the CFD model. Further work on non-steady state simulation of wake flows for dispersion studies is recommended.

  • The present paper describes the results of performance analysis for UH-60A rotor blade in hover. For the numerical simulations, commercial CFD software, FLUENT was used with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The flow solver was based on node based scheme and second order spatial accuracy options was used for simulations. For the enhancement of wake capturing capability, high resolution grid was used around tip vortex region. Granting that somewhat over prediction of thrust was observed near blade tip region, performance was well correlated with experimental data within 3% accuracy in the operating region. Finally it was shown that the present flow solver can be used for preliminary performance analysis tool for hovering helicopter rotor blades.

  • Several high resolution schemes such as OSHER, MUSCL, SMART, GAMMA, WACEB and CUBISTA are applied to two typical test cases of a translation test and a collapsing water column problem for the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results are found to show that SMART scheme gives the best performance with respect to accuracy and robustness.

  • In the present study, CFD methods are applied in the design procedure of rotor blades in a axial-flow fan and the aerodynamic performances are predicted. The blade profiles initially determined by the free vortex method and empirical formula are modified to match the target value of the rotor work load through the analysis of 3D Navier-Stokes solver. The corrected shapes of the rotor blade showed the increase of the efficiency and the pressure simultaneously.

  • In the past much effort has been made to utilize advanced computational fluid dynamic (CFD) programs for aeroelastic simulations and analysis. However, it is limited in the field of unsteady aeroelasticity due to enormous size of computer memory and unreasonably long CPU time. Recently, AAEMS(Aerodynamics is Aeroelasticity minus Structure) was developed for linear time-invariant, coupled fluid-structure systems. In this paper, to demonstrate further the efficiency and accuracy of the new model reduction method, we successfully examine AGARD 445.6 wing modeled by FLUENT CFD, FSIPRO3D and NASTRAN FEM(Finite Element Method) programs. Using the ROM(Reduced Order Modeling) one can predict flutter boundary as a function of the dynamic pressure.
