Validation of diesel engine gas flow one-dimensional numerical analysis using the method of characteristics (특성곡선법을 이용한 디젤엔진 가스유동 1차원 수치해석의 타당성 평가)

  • In order to design a diesel engine system and predict its performance, it is necessary to analyze the gas flow of the intake and exhaust system. A gas flow analysis in three-dimensional (3D) format needs a high-resolution workstation and enormous time for analysis. Therefore, the method of characteristics (MOC) was used for a gas flow analysis with a fast calculation time and a low-resolution workstation. An experiment was conducted on a single cylinder diesel engine to measure pressure in cylinder, intake pipe and exhaust pipe. The one-dimensional (1D) gas flow was analyzed under the same conditions as the experiment. The engine speed, valve timing and compression ratio were the same conditions and the intake pressure was inputted as the experimental results. Bent pipe such as an exhaust port that cannot be realized in 1D was omitted. As results of validation, the cylinder pressure showed accuracy, but the exhaust pipe pressure exhibited inaccuracy. This is considered as an error caused by the failure to implement a bent pipe such as an exhaust port. When analyzed in 3D, calculation time required 61 hours more based on a model of this study. In the future, we intend to implement a bent pipe that cannot be realized in 1D using 3D and prepare a method to supplement reliability by using 1D-3D coupling.

  • In this research, the algorithm for simulating specific grain size distribution(GSD) with large diameter granular material was developed using the distinct element analysis program $PFC^{3D}$(Particle Flow Code). This modeling approach can generate the initial distinct elements without clump logic or cluster logic and prevent distinct element from escaping through the confining walls during the process. Finally the proposed distinct element model is used to simulate large triaxial compression test of the rockfill material and we compared the simulation output with lab test results. Simulation results of Assembly showed very well agreement with the GSD of the test sample and numerical modeling of granular material would be possible for various stress conditions using this application through the calibration.

  • Since quasi-brittle materials like concrete show strain localization behavior accompanied by strain softening, a numerical drawback such as mesh sensitivity is appeared in the finite element analysis. In this paper, the so-called homogenized crack model which was introduced for three dimensional finite element analysis of fracture in concrete is studied for the mesh size dependence problem in fracture analysis. A homogenized crack element having a velocity discontinuity. is averaged to remove the mesh sensitivity in finite element analysis of concrete fracture. Numerical examples show that softening behavior of concrete fracture is successfully predicted without mesh sensitivity using the homogenized crack model.

  • The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is evaluate the application of a commercial CFD code to predict 3-D flow and power characteristics of wind turbines. The experimental approach, which has been main method of investigation, appears to be its limits, the cost increasing with the size of the wind turbines, hence mostly limited to observing the phenomena on rotor blades. Therefore, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes solvers are considered a very serious contender. The flow solver CFX-TASCflow is employed in all computations in this paper. The 3-D flow separation and the wake distribution of 2 and 3 bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) are compared to Heuristic model and smoke-visualized experimental result by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory). Simulated 3-D flow separation structure on the rotor blade is very similar to Heuristic model and the wake structure of the wind turbine is good consistent with smoke-visualized result. The calculated power of the 3 bladed rotor by CFD is compared with BEM results by TV-Delft. The CFD results of which is somewhat consist with BEM results, under an error less than 10%.

  • In this paper, we used E-J constitutive law and H-formulation to calculate magnetic field profile, current density, and magnetization of high temperature superconductor (HTS) placed in time varying applied magnetic field. Finite element method (FEM)-based software, Comsol Multiphysics 3.5a, was employed to simulate 2-dimensional model of a superconducting thin strip. The numerical results based on Kim's critical state model were compared with the case of strip in a perpendicular field in the Brandt's paper as well as experimental data observed by Scanning Hall Probe and SQUID.

  • In this paper, a mathematical model is used to the evaluation of thermoelastic interactions in fiber-reinforced material with a spherical cavity. With the goal of establishing the generalized thermoelastic model with thermal relaxation time are exploited. inner surface of the spherical cavity is tractions free and loaded by the uniform step in temperature. The finite element scheme is used to get the problem numerical solutions. The numerical results have been discussed graphically to show the impacts of the presence and the absence of reinforcement.

Reinforcement and Arching Effect of Geogrid-reinforced and Pile-supported Embankments (지오그리드와 말뚝으로 보강된 성토지반의 보강 및 아칭효과 연구)

  • Geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported embankments have been increasingly used and researched around the world. The inclusion of one or multiple geosynthetic reinforcements over the pile is intended to enhance the efficiency of load transfer from soft ground to piles, to reduce total and differential settlement and increase global or local stability. In this paper, the reinforcement effectiveness and arching effect of the geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported embankments have been studied in terms of field model tests and numerical analysis with varying the space between piles and reinforcement. 2-dimensional numerical analysis has been conducted using the FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) program. And load transfer mechanisms between soil-piles-geogrid were investigated. The mechanisms of load transfer can be considered as a combination of embankment soil arching, tension geogrid, and stress concentration due to the stiffness difference between pile and soft ground. Based on the field model test and numerical analysis results, it was found that the geosynthetic reinforcement slightly interferes with soil arching, and helps reduce differential settlement of the soft ground. Also. at the D/b=3 (D: spacing of pile cap, b: diameter of pile), the total settlement is reduced by about $40\%$ compared to that without reinforcement. For $D/b{\ge}6$, the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement in reducing settlement is negligible.

Mechanical Effects of Back Supporting Beam of Assembled Earth Retaining Wall on Field Model Tests Results (현장모형실험을 통한 AER옹벽의 지주보의 역학적 효과)

  • In this study, an Assembled Earth Retaining Wall (AER wall) is newly proposed. The AER wall combined stabilizing piles names as Back Supporting Beam is developed to improve stability and economics of existing retaining walls. For the verification of the AER wall, the field model tests and 3D numerical analyses were performed. As a result of the field tests, it can be confirmed that the earth pressure is considerably reduced compared with the L-shaped retaining wall. Also, the 3D numerical analyses show that AER wall is at least 29.85% more effective at lateral displacement than general L-shaped retaining wall. In other words, AER wall is expected to raise economical efficiency because of excellent mechanical stability of Back Supporting Beam.

Numerical procedures for extreme impulsive loading on high strength concrete structures

  • This paper demonstrates numerical techniques for complex large-scale modeling with microplane constitutive theories for reinforced high strength concrete, which for these applications, is defined to be around the 7000 psi (48 MPa) strength as frequently found in protective structural design. Applications involve highly impulsive loads, such as an explosive detonation or impact-penetration event. These capabilities were implemented into the authors' finite element code, ParaAble and the PRONTO 3D code from Sandia National Laboratories. All materials are explicitly modeled with eight-noded hexahedral elements. The concrete is modeled with a microplane constitutive theory, the reinforcing steel is modeled with the Johnson-Cook model, and the high explosive material is modeled with a JWL equation of state and a programmed burn model. Damage evolution, which can be used for erosion of elements and/or for post-analysis examination of damage, is extracted from the microplane predictions and computed by a modified Holmquist-Johnson-Cook approach that relates damage to levels of inelastic strain increment and pressure. Computation is performed with MPI on parallel processors. Several practical analyses demonstrate that large-scale analyses of this type can be reasonably run on large parallel computing systems.
