Parallelized Unstructured-Grid Finite Volume Method for Modeling Radiative Heat Transfer

  • In this work, we developed an accurate and efficient radiative finite volume method applicable for the complex 2D planar and 3D geometries using an unstructured-grid finite volume method. The present numerical model has fully been validated by several benchmark cases including the radiative heat transfer in quadrilateral enclosure with isothermal medium, tetrahedral enclosure, a three-dimensional idealized furnace, as well as convection-coupled radiative heat transfer in a square enclosure. The numerical results for all cases are well agreed with the previous results. Special emphasis is given to the parallelization of the unstructured-grid radiative FVM using the domain decomposition approach. Numerical results indicate that the present parallel unstruc­tured-grid FVM has the good performance in terms of accuracy, geometric flexibility, and computational efficiency.

  • Solid Oxide Fuel Cell technology uses powder processes to produce electrodes with residual porosity by partially sintering a mixture of electronically and ionically conducting particles. We model porous fuel cell electrodes with 3D packings of monosized spherical particles. These packings are created by numerical sintering. Each particle-particle contact is characteristic for an ionic, electronic or electrochemical resistance. The numerical packing is then discretized into a resistor network which is solved by using Kirchhoff's current law to evaluate the electrode's electrochemical performance. We investigate in particular percolation effects in functionally graded electrodes as compared to other types of electrodes.

지오그리드로 보강된 성토지지말뚝의 보강 및 아칭효과분석 (Reinforcement Effectiveness and Arching Effect of Geogrid-Reinforced and Pile-Supported Roadway Embankment)

  • 본 연구에서는 지오그리드로 보강된 성토지지말뚝의 보강 및 아칭효과를 분석하기위하여 실대형 현장모형시험과 2차원 평면변형 수치해석을 수행하였다. 연약지반 상 지오그리드로 보강된 성토지지말뚝의 현장모형시험은 $3{\times}3$ 콘크리트말뚝을 말뚝간격변화에 따라 연약지반에 타입하고 지오그리드를 포설한 후, 침하량, 수직하중, 지오그리드의 스트레인을 계측하였다. 또한 2차원 수치해석은 범용 유한차분해석 프로그램인 FLAC 2D를 이용하여 현장모형시험에 대한 비교해석을 실시하였다. 각각의 현장모형시험 및 수치해석결과, 말뚝 보강에 의한 지반의 아칭효과는 말뚝캡 중앙부에서 가장 크게 발생하였으며, 말뚝-지반-지오그리드의 강성차이로 인하여 지오그리드에 인장력이 유발되고 지오그리드 인장력발생에 의한 하중전이로 전체 지오그리드 및 성토지지말뚝 보강지반의 부등침하가 급격히 감소하였다. 또한, 말뚝간격에 따른 보강효과는 말뚝간격 $D/b{\geq}6.0$일 경우 보강효과가 거의 없는 것으로 도출되었다.

Stability analyses of a cylindrical steel silo with corrugated sheets and columns

  • The paper presents comprehensive quasi-static stability analysis results for a real funnel-flow cylindrical steel silo composed of horizontally corrugated sheets strengthened by vertical thin-walled column profiles. Linear buckling and non-linear analyses with geometric and material non-linearity were carried out with a perfect and an imperfect silo by taking into account axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric loads imposed by a bulk solid following Eurocode 1. Finite element simulations were carried out with 3 different numerical models (single column on the elastic foundation, 3D silo model with the equivalent orthotropic shell and full 3D silo model with shell elements). Initial imperfections in the form of a first eigen-mode for different wall loads and from 'in-situ' measurements with horizontal different amplitudes were taken into account. The results were compared with Eurocode 3. Some recommendations for the silo dimensioning were elaborated.

수치사진측량의 효율적 적용을 위한 3차원 지형모델링 (3-D Topographical Modelling for Effective Application of Digital Photogrammetry)

  • 고해상도의 디지털 카메라는 근거리 수치사진측량에서 널리 유용하게 사용되고 있으며 점차 활용도가 증가하고 있다. 또한 사진측량 장비의 급속한 발전으로 정밀도가 많이 향상되었고 컴퓨터를 이용한 지형공간정보체계기술의 발달로 더욱 정밀한 3차원 지형의 재현과 면적 및 토공량 산정이 가능하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 휴대가 간편하고 수치영상의 자체저장능력을 지닌 디지털 카메라를 이용하여 촬영조건의 다양한 변화에 따른 위치오차를 분석하였으며 광속조정을 통하여 높은 정확도의 화소 좌표를 획득하여 3차원 지형의 모델링을 위한 기초 자료로 사용할 수 있도록 하였다.

Robust quasi 3D computational model for mechanical response of FG thick sandwich plate

  • This paper aims to develop a quasi-3D shear deformation theory for the study of bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded (FG) sandwich thick plates. For that, in the present theory, both the components of normal deformation and shear strain are included. The displacement field of the proposed model contains undetermined integral terms and involves only four unknown functions with including stretching effect. Using Navier's technique the solution of the problem is derived for simply supported sandwich plate. Numerical results have been reported, and compared with those available in the open literature were excellent agreement was observed. Finally, a detailed parametric study is presented to demonstrate the effect of the different parameters on the flexural responses, free vibration and buckling of a simply supported sandwich plates.

준설 탁도플륨의 3차원 이송확산 거동 모형 (3-D Dispersive Transport Model for Turbidity Plume induced by Dredging Operation)

  • 준설작업으로 인해 재부유된 퇴적물로 구성된 탁도플륨의 이송확산 거동을 예측하기 위해 이(1998)가 제안한 수치 해석의 혼합방법(hybrid method)을 사용하여 3차원 수치모형을 개발하였다. 본 모형에서는 이송 및 확산식의 수치해석에 있어 이송 과정은 전방입자추적기법(forward particle-tracking method), 확산 과정은 유한차분기법을 사용하여 수치계산에 있어 무작위 행보(random walk) 방법에 비해 계산시간이 크게 단축되었으며, 수치모의 결과의 정확성도 크게 향상되었다. 본 모형을 검증하기 위하여 1, 2차원 해석해와의 비교, 그리고 Kuo 등(1985)의 3차원 수리해석모형의 계산결과와 비교하였다. 본 모형의 검증 결과는 비교적 해석해와 잘 일치하였다.

채굴적 주변 대형 지하광장의 3차원 안정성해석 (Three-dimensional Stability Analysis of A Large Underground Hall in Mined Area)

  • 폐갱도를 이용하여 관광공원을 조성할 목적으로 지하에 건설될 예정인 대형 지하광장의 안정성을 분석하기 위하여 FLAC3D를 이용한 3차원 수치해석을 수행하였다. 모델링은 두 단계로 나누어 실시되었다. 첫 단계는 지하광장 자체의 안정성 분석이며, 두 번째 단계는 인근의 채굴적이 미치는 영향분석이다. 첫 번째 단계에서는 모델의 불평형력 수렴 여부, 광장 주변의 소성 또는 인장파괴 영역의 발생상황 그리고 변위 양상으로써 광장의 안정성을 판단하였다. 두 번째 단계에서는 채굴적의 존재 유무에 따른 광장 주변의 응력상태 변화를 분석하였다. 해석결과 대형 지하광장은 역학적으로 아무런 문제가 없으며 채굴적으로 인한 영향도 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다.

Efficient flexible boundary algorithms for DEM simulations of biaxial and triaxial tests

  • The accurate modeling of boundary conditions is important in simulations of the discrete element method (DEM) and can affect the numerical results significantly. In conventional triaxial compression (CTC) tests, the specimens are wrapped by flexible membranes allowing to deform freely. To accurately model the boundary conditions of CTC, new flexible boundary algorithms for 2D and 3D DEM simulations are proposed. The new algorithms are computationally efficient and easy to implement. Moreover, both horizontal and vertical component of confining pressure are considered in the 2D and 3D algorithms, which can ensure that the directions of confining pressure are always perpendicular to the specimen surfaces. Furthermore, the boundaries are continuous and closed in the new algorithms, which can prevent the escape of particles from the specimens. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is validated by biaxial and triaxial simulations of granular materials. The results show that the algorithms allow the boundaries to deform non-uniformly on the premise of maintaining high control accuracy of confining pressure. Meanwhile, the influences of different lateral boundary conditions on the numerical results are discussed. It is indicated that the flexible boundary is more appropriate for the models with large strain or significant localization than rigid boundary.

해안지하수위가 해빈변형에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Coastal Groundwater Level on Beach Deformation)

  • In order to understand the characteristics of beach deformation, in this study, numerical simulations were conducted using a 3-D hydro-morphodynamic model (HYMO-WASS-3D) to analyze the characteristics of beach deformation due to the coastal groundwater levels. HYMO-WASS-3D directly analyzed the nonlinear interaction between the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes in the coastal area. The simulation results of HYMO-WASS-3D showed good agreement with the experimental results on the changes in the profile of the beach in the surf and swash zones. Then, numerical simulations were conducted to examine the characteristics of beach deformation due to the variation of the level of the coastal groundwater. As a result, the beach profiles were examined in relation to the wave breaking in the surf zone and the wave uprush and backwash in the swash zone due to the differences in the water levels. This paper also discussed the temporal and spatial distributions of the velocities, vorticities, and suspended sediments in the surf and swash zones with various levels of the coastal groundwater.
