  • In the present study, a three dimensional hydrodynamic characteristics around the fully submerged dual breakwaters with a sand beach has been investigated numerically using a 3-D numerical scheme, which can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model and is able to consider wave-structure-seabed interaction in 3-dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-3D), recently developed by Hur and Lee (2007). Based on the numerical experiments, strong vortices can be generated fore and aft edges of the structures, and propagate lee sides. Thus relatively large circulation flows are occurred around submerged breakwaters. The 3-D flow hydrodynamic characteristics have been examined by mean flows and mean vortices for various x-y, x-z sections and y-z layers. Wave height distribution and wave set-up around and over submerged breakwaters, and breaking point migration toward shore side is discussed in detail.

  • In this paper, we present a 3D thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled discrete beam lattice model of structure built of the nonisothermal saturated poro-plastic medium subjected to mechanical loads and nonstationary heat transfer conditions. The proposed model is based on Voronoi cell representation of the domain with cohesive links represented as inelastic Timoshenko beam finite elements enhanced with additional kinematics in terms of embedded strong discontinuities in axial and both transverse directions. The enhanced Timoshenko beam finite element is capable of modeling crack formation in mode I, mode II and mode III. Mode I relates to crack opening, mode II relates to in-plane crack sliding, and mode III relates to the out-of-plane shear sliding. The pore fluid flow and heat flow in the proposed model are governed by Darcy's law and Fourier's law for heat conduction, respectively. The pore pressure field and temperature field are approximated with linear tetrahedral finite elements. By exploiting nodal point quadrature rule for numerical integration on tetrahedral finite elements and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay tetrahedralization, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with additional pore pressure and temperature degrees of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The results of several numerical simulations are presented and discussed.

  • Numerical study is conducted to design the high temperature heat exchanger of Stirling engine by using the commercial CFD solver, FLUENT. The Fin-tube type of heat exchanger is designed as a reference model by considering the type of engine which is ${\beta}$-configuration. To find the optimal design of heat exchanger in heat transfer capacity numerical calculation is conducted by changing the shape, the number, and material of reference model in three-dimensional combustion field. Adjusted one-way constant velocity of working fluid that is helium is considered as the representative velocity of oscillating flow. The optimal design of heat exchanger considering the heat transfer capability is suggested by using the calculation results.

  • In this research, the thermomechanical responses of shape memory alloy(SMA) actuators and their applications in the structures combining strip SMA actuators are investigated. The numerical algorithm of the 3-D SMA thermomechanical constitutive equations based on Lagoudas model is developed using user material(UMAT) subroutine written by FORTRAN. For the numerical results, the ABAQUS finite element program has been utilized with UMAT subroutine of the numerical algorithm of SMAs. The interactions between the host structure and SMA strip actuator are numerically investigated.

  • Stack effect on high-rise building have negative effect on living environment, energy and life-safety aspect. Thus, it's necessary to find the measure to reduce the stack effect. As a result of field test on a 31-story building, a circulating type stack effect reduction technology was developed, which supplies air in the low stairs and discharges air in the high stairs. To evaluate the performance of this circulating type stack effect reduction technology on building stairs, a 3D numerical analysis was carried out by using Momentum Loss Model for analyzing leakage flow between compartments in a building. Consequently, numerical analysis proved that the stack effect on building stairs was reduced by a circulating type stack effect reduction technology.

  • This paper is to perform 3-dimensional numerical analysis considering face pressure, backfill pressure, excavation length, soil model and element size for selecting key factors of ground surface settlement due to shield TBM advancement. According to the numerical analysis results, backfill pressure and soil model are governing factors inducing ground surface settlement. To complement this study, the ground conditions and characteristics of the boring machine will be considered using numerical analysis.

  • In this paper, the consolidation efficiency and the equivalent diameter of the cross shaped drain are examined by using the laboratory test and the numerical model, and the results are compared with those of the band shaped drain. The equivalent diameter of the tested drains is back-calculated from the laboratory experiment and compared with those calculated from the formula suggested in the literature. The efficiency of the cross shaped drain is evaluated by using the 3-D flow program which was validated by the settlement-time test fill data. The results of laboratory test show that the equivalent diameter of the band shaped drain was close to the Rixner's formula and that of the cross shaped drain was fit to the following formula: $d_w\;=\; \\tarc{3}{4}.(b+t)$The results of the numerical analysis show that the cross shaped drain can reduce the consolidation time by 9-10% from that for the band shaped drain. The equivalent diameter obtained from the numerical flow model by using the field data is 3.5 times smaller than that obtained from the laboratory consolidation test.

  • Dynamic numerical simulation of pile-supported slab track system embedded in a soft soil and embankment was performed. 3D model was formulated in a time domain to consider the non-linearity of soil by utilizing FLAC 3D, which is a finite difference method program. Soil non-linearity was simulated by adopting the hysteric damping model and liner elements, which could consider soil-pile interface. The long period seismic loads, Hachinohe type strong motions, were applied for estimating seismic respose of the system, Parametric study was carried out by changing subsoil layer profile, embankment height and seismic loading conditions. The most of horizontal permanent displacement was initiated by slope failure. Increase of the embedded height and thickness of the soft soil layer leads increase of member forces of PHC piles; bending moment, and axial force. Finally, basic guidelines for designing pile-supported slab track system under seismic loading are recommended based on the analysis results.

  • In this study, the stability of the room-and-pillar underground method was investigated using numerical analysis method. In-situ geotechnical investigation was conducted, and a supporting pattern was selected based on the geotechnical investigation data. For the supporting pattern, Type-1, 2, 3 were selected for each ground condition. A 3D numerical analysis model was developed for effective simulation as the room-and-pillar underground method consist of a pillar and room. As a review of numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the crown settlement, convergence, shotcrete and rock bolt were all stable in all supporting patterns. As a result of the analysis by the construction stage, it was confirmed that excessive stress was generated in the room when the construction stage of forming pillar. So, precise construction is required during the actual construction stage of the pillar formation.

  • In case of constructing submerged breakwaters for the purpose of preventing coastal erosion, the number of submerged breakwaters, as well as their asymmetry is dependent on the field conditions. The aim of the present study was to examine the 3-D hydrodynamic characteristics (3-D wave field, wave height, mean water level, and mean flow) around the asymmetric submerged breakwaters using a 3-D numerical model, LES-WASS-3D, which was validated through a comparison with existing experimental data and showed fairly nice agreement. From the numerical results, the wave height, mean water level, and mean flow are discussed in relation with the variation in the breakwater length ratio.
