Main objective of this research is to evaluate performance of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns for ductility and strength. Eight one-third scale columns with compressive strength of 69 MPa were subjected to a constant axial load corresponding to 30 % of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement (${\rho}_s=1.58$, 2.25 %), tie configuration (Type H, Type C and Type D) and tie yield strength ($f_{yh}=549$ and 779 MPa). Test results show that the flexural strength of every column exceeds the calculated flexural capacity based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in the current design code. Columns with 42 % higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour, showing a displacement ductility factor (${\mu}_{{\Delta}u}$) of 3.69 to 4.85, and a curvature ductility factor (${\mu}_{{\varphi}u}$) of over 10.0. With an axial load of 30 % of the axial load capacity, it is recommended that the yield strength of transverse reinforcement be held equal to or below 549 MPa.
In order to study cortical properties in human, it is necessary to obtain an accurate and explicit representation of the cortical surface in individual subjects. Among many approaches, surface-based method that reconstructs a 3-D model from contour lines on cross-section images is widely used. In general, however, medical brain imaging has some problems such as the complexity of the images, non-linear gain artifacts and so on. Due these limitations, therefore, extracting anatomical structures from imaging data is very a complicated and time-consuming task. In this paper, we present an improved method for extracting contour lines of cortical surface from magnetic resonance images that simplifies procedures of a conventional method. The conventional method obtains contour lines through thinning and chain code process. On the other hand, the proposed method can extract contour lines from comparison between boundary data and labeling image without supplementary processes. The usefulness of the proposed method has been verified using brain image.
In ocean industry, free surface type ART (Anti Roll tank) system has been widely used to suppress the roll motion of floating structures. In those, various obstacles have been devised to obtain the sufficient damping and to enhance the controllability of freely rushing water inside the tank. Most of previous researches have paid on the development of simple mathematical formula for coupled ship-ARTs analysis although other numerical and experimental approaches exist. Little attention has been focused on the use of 3D panel method for preliminary design of free surface type ART despite its advantages in computational time and general capacity for hydrodynamic damping estimation. This study aims at developing a potential theory based hydrodynamic code for the analysis of floating structure with baffled ARTs. The sloshing in baffled tanks is modeled through the linear potential theory with FE discretization and it coupled with hydrodynamic equations of floating structures discretized by BEM and FEM, resulting in direct coupled FE-BE formulation. The general capacity of proposed formulation is emphasized through the coupled hydrodynamic analysis of floating structure and sloshing inside baffled ARTs. In addition, the numerical methods for natural sloshing frequency tuning and estimation of hydrodynamic damping ratio of liquid sloshing in baffled tanks undergoing wave exiting loads are developed through the proposed formulation. In numerical examples, effects of natural frequency tuning and baffle ratios on the maximum and significant roll motions are investigated.

In this paper, we propose the efficient Doppler removal method using map-based partial-time common intermediate frequency removal technique. In the proposed algorithm, the 2-stage carrier removal process was used. First, the component of common intermediate frequency is removed. Next the component of Doppler was removed with averaging and approximation. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, The real-time software GPS L1 C/A-code receiver was implemented. When the proposed algorithms are used, 12 tracking channels with 3 track arm(early, prompt, late) is operated real-time on PC using a Intel Pentium-III 1.0GHz CPU. Also, the requirement of memory was less than 2Mbytes. The real-time software GNSS receiver using the proposed algorithms provides the navigation solution with below 10 meter rms error. Especially, in spited of using the various approximations for implementing the algorithms, the high sensitivity capability (able to track the weak signal with -159dBm) was achieved.
3-D numerical studies are performed to investigate the effect of the air dam height and approaching air velocities on the pressure distribution of notchback road vehicle. For this purpose, the models of test vehicle with four different air dam heights are introduced and PHOENICS, a commercial CFD code, is used to simulate the flow phenomena and to estimate the values of pressure coefficients along the surface of vehicle. The standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is adopted for the simulation of turbulence. The numerical results show that the height variation of air dam makes almost no influence on the distribution of the value of pressure coefficient along upper and rear surface but makes strong effects on the bottom surface. That is, the value of pressure coefficient becomes smaller as the height is increased along the bottom surface. Approaching air velocity makes no differences on pressure coefficients. Through the analysis of pressure coefficient on the vehicle surface, one tries to assess aerodynamic drag and lift of vehicle. The pressure distribution on the bottom surface affects more on lift than the pressure distribution on the upper surface of the vehicle does. The increase of air dam height makes positive effects on the lift decrease but no effects on drag reduction.
The bogie between the track and the railway vehicle body, is one of the most important component in railroad vehicle. Its effects on the safety of both passengers and vehicle itself, and on the overall performance of the vehicle such as riding quality, noise and vibration are critical. The bogie is mainly consisted of the bogie frame, suspensions, wheels and axles, braking system, and transmission system. The complex shapes of the bogie frame and the complicate loading condition (both static and dynamic) induced in real operation make it difficult to design the bogie frame fulfilling all the requirements. The complicated loads applied to the bogie frame are i) static load due to the weight of the vehicle and passengers, ii) quasi-static load due to the rolling in curves iii) dynamic load due to the relative motion between the track, bogie, and vehicle body. In designing the real bogie frame, fatigue analysis based on the above complicated loading conditions is a must. In this study, stress analysis of the bogie frame has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC Code 6 15-4. Magnitudes of the stress amplitude and mean stress were estimated based on the stress analysis results to simulate the operating loads encountered in service. Fatigue strength of the bogie frame was evaluated by using the constant life diagram of the material. 3-D surface modelling, finite element meshing, and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN, and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively.

Dynamic compaction has evolved as an acceptable method of site improvement by treating poor soils in situ. The method is often an economical alternative for utilizing shallow foundations and preparing subgrades for construction when compared with conventional solutions. In general, the installation purpose of dynamic compaction are to increase bearing capacity and decrease differential settlement within a specified depth of improvement. This method involves the s systematically dropping large weights onto the ground surface to compact the underlying ground. The weights used on dynamic compaction projects have been typically constructed of steel plates, sand or concrete filled steel shells, and reinforced concrete. Typically, weights range from 5-20 ton and base configurations are, circular or octagonal. In this study, the effective depth of improvement is evaluated based on the numerical analysis code, the dynamic analysis of FLAC-3D program, in order to analyze the influence parameters ; ground conditions, maximum applied load and the area of compaction plate.
In this paper, we proposed an internal multiband loop embedded monopole antenna for mobile handset that could be used for smart phones. The proposed antenna has a volume of 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 15 mm(L) ${\times}$ 5 mm(H), ground plane size is 40 mm(W) ${\times}$ 80 mm(L), and covers the GSM900 (Global System for Mobile communications : 880-960 MHz), K-PCS (Korea-Personal Communications Service : 1750-1870 MHz), US-PCS (US Personal Communications Service : 1850-1990 MHz), WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access : 1920-2170 MHz), Wibro (2300-2390 MHz), Bluetooth (2400-2483 MHz) and WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network : 2400-2483.5 MHz) bands for VSWR (voltage standing wave ration) less than 3. The proposed loop adding design at middle section of longest branch showed wide impedance bandwidth for the lowest resonance frequency band. The proposed antenna have a lowest resonance frequency band from 738 MHz to 1075 MHz for S11 value of -6dB. A HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) of the Ansys Corporation based on a finite element method is employed to analyze the proposed antenna in the design process and to compare the simulation and experimental results.

In this study, flow structure in a two-stage centrifugal compressor for a turbo-chiller with the refrigerant, R134a, was numerically investigated at the design point of the compressor using a commercial code. Flow characteristics in the passages of impeller, diffuser and return channel were analyzed in detail including velocity vector, secondary flow, Mach number and pressure contours in blade spanwise and meridional plane for each stage. The estimation on the one-dimensional output from the preliminary design and three-dimensional shape of the impeller blade and the meridional shape of the return channel were performed through the flow analysis, while some numerical schemes and techniques including Multiple Frames of Reference technique, real gas property data and inlet boundary condition changes, which were used in CFD, were compared with their features. The results will be used as reference data for a new design of 3-D impeller shape to improve R134a compressor performance.
