A new piezoceramic $d_{15}$ shear-induced torsion actuation mechanism representative benchmark is proposed and its experimentations and corresponding 3D finite element (FE) simulations are conducted. For this purpose, a long and thin smart sandwich cantilever beam is dimensioned and built so that it can be used later for either validating analytical Saint Venant-type solutions or for analyzing arm or blade-based smart structures and systems applications. The sandwich beam core is formed by two adjacent rows of 8 oppositely axially polarized d15 shear piezoceramic patches, and its faces are dimensionally identical and made of the same glass fiber reinforced polymer composite material. Quasi-static and static experimentations were made using a point laser sensor and a scanning laser vibrometer, while the 3D FE simulations were conducted using the commercial software $ABAQUS^{(R)}$. The measured transverse deflection by both sensors showed strong nonlinear and hysteretic (static only) variation with the actuation voltage, which cannot be caught by the linear 3D FE simulations.
The large container ships and fast patrol boats are complex marine structures. Therefore, their global mechanical behaviour has long been modeled mostly by refined beam theories. Important issues of cross section warping and bending-torsion coupling have been addressed by introducing special functions in these theories with inherent assumptions and thus compromising their robustness. The 3D solid Finite Element (FE) models, on the other hand, are accurate enough but pose high computational cost. In this work, different marine vessel structures have been analysed using the well-known Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). According to CUF, the governing equations (and consequently the finite element arrays) are written in terms of fundamental nuclei that do not depend on the problem characteristics and the approximation order. Thus, refined models can be developed in an automatic manner. In the present work, a particular class of 1D CUF models that was initially devised for the analysis of aircraft structures has been employed for the analysis of marine structures. This class, which was called Component-Wise (CW), allows one to model complex 3D features, such as inclined hull walls, floors and girders in the form of components. Realistic ship geometries were used to demonstrate the efficacy of the CUF approach. With the same level of accuracy achieved, 1D CUF beam elements require far less number of Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) compared to a 3D solid FE solution.

In this paper, the boom of a floating crane is modeled as a 3-dimensional elastic beam in order to analyze the dynamic response of the crane and its cargo. The boom is divided into more than two elements based on finite element formulation, and deformation of each element is expressed in terms of shape matrix and nodal coordinates. The equations of motion for the elastic boom consist of a mass matrix, a stiffness matrix, and a quadratic velocity vector that contains the gyroscopic and Coriolis forces. The size and complicity of the matrices increase in proportion with the number of elements. Therefore, it is not possible to derive the equations of motion explicitly for different number of elements. To overcome this difficulty, matrices for one 3-dimensional element are expressed with elementary sub-matrices. In particular, the quadratic velocity vector is derived as a product of a shape matrix and a 3-dimensional rotation matrix. By using the derived matrices, the equations of motion for the multi-element boom are automatically constructed. To verify the implementation of the elastic boom based on finite element formulation, we simulated a simple vibration of the elastic boom and compared the average deformation with the analytic solution. Finally, heave motion of the floating crane and surge motion of the cargo are presented as application examples of the elastic boom.
In this study, the seismic performance levels of four bridges are determined using finite element modeling based on ambient vibration testing. The study includes finite element modeling, analytical modal analyses, ambient vibration testing and earthquake analyses of the bridges. For the purpose, four prestressed precast I beam bridges that were constructed for the Ankara-Sivas high speed railway line are selected for analytical and experimental studies. In the study, firstly a literature review related to the dynamic behavior of bridges especially precast beam bridges is given and then the formulation part related to ambient vibration testing and structural performance according to Turkish Seismic Code (2007) is presented. Next, 3D finite element models of the bridge are described and modeled using LARSA 4D software, and analytical dynamic characteristics are obtained. Then ambient vibration testing conducted on the bridges under natural excitations and experimental natural frequencies are estimated. Lastly, time history analyses of the bridges under the 1999 Kocaeli, 1992 Erzincan, and 1999 Duzce Earthquakes are performed and seismic performance levels according to TSC2007 are determined. The results show that the damage on the bridges is all under the minimum damage limit which is in the minimum damage region under all three earthquakes.
The Stonecutters Bridge (SCB) in Hong Kong is the third-longest cable-stayed bridge in the world with a main span stretching 1,018 m between two 298 m high single-leg tapering composite towers. A Wind and Structural Health Monitoring System (WASHMS) is being implemented on SCB by the Highways Department of The Hong Kong SAR Government, and the SCB-WASHMS is composed of more than 1,300 sensors in 15 types. In order to establish a linkage between structural health monitoring and maintenance management, a Structural Health Rating System (SHRS) with relevant rating tools and indices is devised. On the basis of a 3D space frame finite element model (FEM) of SCB and model updating, this paper presents the development of an SHR-oriented 3D multi-scale FEM for the purpose of load-resistance analysis and damage evaluation in structural element level, including modeling, refinement and validation of the multi-scale FEM. The refined 3D structural segments at deck and towers are established in critical segment positions corresponding to maximum cable forces. The components in the critical segment region are modeled as a full 3D FEM and fitted into the 3D space frame FEM. The boundary conditions between beam and shell elements are performed conforming to equivalent stiffness, effective mass and compatibility of deformation. The 3D multi-scale FEM is verified by the in-situ measured dynamic characteristics and static response. A good agreement between the FEM and measurement results indicates that the 3D multi-scale FEM is precise and efficient for WASHMS and SHRS of SCB. In addition, stress distribution and concentration of the critical segments in the 3D multi-scale FEM under temperature loads, static wind loads and equivalent seismic loads are investigated. Stress concentration elements under equivalent seismic loads exist in the anchor zone in steel/concrete beam and the anchor plate edge in steel anchor box of the towers.

Analysis of structures which are composed of numerous repeated unit structures can be simplified by using homogenized properties. If the unit structure is repeated in one direction, the whole structure may be regarded as a beam. Once the effective stiffness is obtained from the analysis of the unit structure in a proper way, the effort for the detail modeling of the global structure is not required, and the real structure can be replaced simply with a beam. This study proposes a kinematical periodicity constraint to be imposed on the FE model of the unit structure, which improves the accuracy of the effective stiffness. The method is employed to a one dimensionally arrayed 3D structure containing periodically repeated unsymmetrical holes. It is demonstrated that the deformation behavior of the homogenized beam agrees well with that of the real structure.
3D finite element analyses of a corrugated steel web girder and a steel truss web girder are conducted to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of the hybrid girders. And the analyses results are compared with those by the equivalent beam theory. The equivalent theory is a theory that all section properties of a truss structure are replaced by section properties of a beam including a shear coefficient. When applying the equivalent beam theory, the shear coefficient of the corrugated steel web girder is estimated as the area ratio of flange section to web section and that of the steel truss web girder is calculated by the equation proposed by Abdel. Static deflections and natural frequencies by 3D finite element analyses and those by the equivalent beam theory are in good agreement.
The static analysis of structures with arbitrary cross-section geometry and material lamination via a refined one-dimensional (1D) approach is presented in this paper. Higher-order 1D models with a variable order of expansion for the displacement field are developed on the basis of Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). Classical Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are obtained as particular cases of the first-order model. Numerical results of displacement, strain and stress are provided by using the finite element method (FEM) along the longitudinal direction for different configurations in excellent agreement with three-dimensional (3D) finite element solutions. In particular, a layered thin-walled cylinder is considered as first assessment with a laminated conventional cross-section. An atherosclerotic plaque is introduced as a typical structure with arbitrary cross-section geometry and studied for both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous material cases through the 1D variable kinematic models. The analyses highlight limitations of classical beam theories and the importance of higher-order terms in accurately detecting in-plane cross-section deformation without introducing additional numerical problems. Comparisons with 3D finite element solutions prove that 1D CUF provides remarkable three-dimensional accuracy in the analysis of even short and nonhomogeneous structures with arbitrary geometry through a significant reduction in computational cost.
The spreading tube of X-ray cathode tube displayed with an electromagnetic finite element method was designed. To analyze a feature design and the concrete coordinate performance of soft X-ray tube modeling, the orbit of electron beam was simulated by OPERA-3D SW program. The fixed conditions were the applied voltage, the temperature, the work function of thermal electron between cathode and anode of tungsten. Through the analysis of distribution of electron beam and the variation of dividing region, the design of soft X-ray spreading tube equipped with two cross filaments was optimized.

A 3-stages Active Microstrip Phased Array Antenn(AMPAA) is implemented using Injection-Locking Coupled Oscillators(ILCO). The AMPAA is a beam scanning active antenna with capability of electrical scanning by frequency varation of ILCO. The synchronization of resonance frequencies in array elements is occured by ILCO, and the ILCO amplifies the injection signal and functions as a phase shifter. The microstrip ptch is operated as a radiation element. The unilateral amplifier is a mutual coupling element of AMPAA, eliminates the reverse locking signal and controls the locking bandwidth of ILCO. The possibility of Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits(MMIC) of T/R module is proposed by simplified and integrated fabrication process of AMPAA. The 0.75.$lambda_{0}$ is fixed for a mutual coupling space to wide the scanning angle and minimize the multi-mode. The AMPAA has beam scanning angle of 31.4.deg., HPBW(Half Power Beam Widths) of 26.deg., directive gain of 13.64dB and side lobe of -16.5dB were measured, respectively.
