  • In order to know the characteristics of attenuation of coda wave in the Kyungsang Sedimentary Basin quality factor for coda wave or coda Q is estimated from the earthquake data recorded in the KIGAM microearthquake network. The single scattering model for coda wave generation is adopted in estimating coda Q. Coda Q appears to be largely dependent on the normalized time(a) which is the ratio of elapsed time to S-wave travel time. In the present study coda Q(Qc) is estimated in the range of a=1.5-3.Q and expressed in terms of frequency(f). The deduced function in the range of 1 to 25 Hz is Qc=36.8283 f1.15095 to represent the strong dependence of coda Q on frequency. It is found that the difference of Qc between U-D N-S and E-W components is negligible, This face supports the back-scattering theory that coda were originates from scattered waves by randomly distributed heterogeneities in the crust. On the other hand it is observed that the coda Q increases with depth.

  • This paper is mainly concerned with the ship-bank interaction by model test. The experiments for the characteristics of hydrodynamic interaction forces and moments between vessel and bank with a mound were carried out in the seakeeping and maneuvering basin. A series of tests were carried out with ship model in parallel course along a vertical sidewall with a mound with varying lateral spacing between model ship and sidewall, length of sidewall and water depth. From the experimental results, it indicated that the hydrodynamic interaction effects increase as length of sidewall with a mound increases. Furthermore, for lateral spacing less than about 0.2L between vessel and bank, it can be concluded that the bank effects increase largely as the lateral spacing between vessel and bank decreases. However, for spacing between vessel and bank more than about 0.3L, the interaction effects increase slowly as lateral spacing decreases. Also, for the water depth to draft ratio(h/d) less than about 1.5, the hydrodynamic interaction effects increase dramatically as h/d decreases.

  • It is necessary to perform the precise analysis of unsteady flow for effective design of the side-weir detention basin installed in the river. Generally, the HEC-RAS program, which is a 1D unsteady numerical model, is mostly used to simulate the unsteady flow for rivers. However, it is difficult to have confidence of unsteady flow results simulated by HEC-RAS due to the lack of experimental data and field monitoring data for the channel with a side-weir detention basin. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to validate or verify the simulation results calculated by HEC-RAS through the experiments for the open channel with a side-weir detention basin using specially-designed unsteady discharge-supply system. The experimental cases included unsteady flows in the straight channel with and without a side-weir detention basin. Especially, for the case with a detention basin, the experiment was performed to consider only the free flow condition over the side-weir. The study results showed that values of water level and discharge obtained from HEC-RAS coincided reasonably with experimental results with the maximum error of 3% for water level and 1% for discharge in the case of the flow without the side-weir detention basin and 4% for water level and 2% for discharge with the side-weir detention basin.

  • In This study develops a quasi-three dimensional numerical model of wave driven coastal currents with accounting the effects of the wave-current interaction and the surface rollers. In the wave model, the current effects on wave breaking and energy dissipation are taken into account as well as the wave diffraction effect. The surface roller associated with wave breaking was modeled based on a modification of the equations by Dally and Brown (1995) and Larson and Kraus (2002). Furthermore, the quasi-three dimensional model, which based on Navier-Stokes equations, was modified in association with the surface roller effect, and solved using frictional step method. The model was validated by data sets obtained during experiments on the Large Scale Sediment Transport Facility (LSTF) basin and the Hazaki Oceanographical Research Station (HORS). Then, a model test against detached breakwater was carried out to investigate the performance of the model around coastal structures. Finally, the model was applied to Akasaki port to verify the hydrodynamics around coastal structures. Good agreements between computations and measurements were obtained with regard to the cross-shore variation in waves and currents in nearshore and surf zone.

  • A possibility of the drag coefficient estimation in numerical water basins was discussed where the numerical solution were calculated by the 3-dimensional hydro-dynamical model (FLOW-$3D^{(R)}$) with the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. On the known cases of the drag coefficients for a rectangle, the numerical drag coefficients got $1.34{\sim}1.52$ and the wind tunnel values were $1.3{\sim}1.5$. For a cylinder, the numerical values were calculated as $0.75{\sim}0.78$ in the range of 0.5

  • This study was performed to develop an information processing system for the sound conservation of soil and groundwater resources. The system contains numerical models and geographic information systems for underground flow and contamination. Multidimensional Finite Element Model for Subsurface Environment (MFEMSE) was invented to analyze underground flow and pollution problems of water and gas phases. Newly developed and conventional models (MODFLOW, MOC3D, MT3D, PMPATH, PEST, UCODE) were integrated with GIS (ArcView) for the construction of an integrated information management system of subsurface environment. This system was applied to the management of three mineral water companies located in clean high mountain basin. Desirable management criteria and operational strategies were suggested using this system. The system was constructed to be applied for the broad sense of decision supporting tools in related topics of this study, so that it can be used not only for the prevention regulations, but also for clean up projects.

  • The southwestern part of the East Sea is known to have a high primary productivity compared to those in the northern and eastern parts, which is attributed to nutrients supplies either by Tsushima Warm Current or by coastal upwelling. However, research on the biological pump in this area is limited. We developed machine learning models to estimate net community production (NCP), a measure of biological pump, with high spatial and time scales of 4 km and 8 days, respectively. The models were fed with the input parameters of sea surface temperature, chlorophyll-a, mixed layer depths, and photosynthetically active radiation and trained with observed NCP derived from high resolution measurements of surface O2/Ar. The root mean square error between the predicted values by the best performing machine model and the observed NCP was 6 mmol O2 m-2 d-1, corresponding to 15% of the average of observed NCP. The NCP in the central part of the Ulleung Basin was highest in March at 49 mmol O2 m-2 d-1 and lowest in June and July at 18 mmol O2 m-2 d-1. These seasonal variations were similar to the vertical nitrate flux based on the 3He gas exchange rate and to the particulate organic carbon flux estimated by the 234Th disequilibrium method. To expand this method, which produces NCP estimate for spring and summer, to autumn and winter, it is necessary to devise a way to correct bias in NCP by the entrainment of subsurface waters during the seasons.

  • According to previous studies, the increased air temperature can lead to change of thermal stratification structure of lakes and reservoirs. The changed thermal stratification may result in alteration of materials and energy flow. The objective of this study was to predict the effect of climate change on the water temperature and stratification structure of Daecheong Reservoir, located in Geum River basin of Korea, using a three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamic model(ELCOM). A long-term(100 years) weather data set provided by the National Institute of Meteorological Research(NIMR) was used for forcing the 3D model. The model was applied to two different hydrological conditions, dry year(2001) and normal year(2004). It means that the effect of air temperature increase was only considered. Simulation results showed that the surface water temperature of the reservoir tend to increase in the future, and the establishment of thermal stratification can occur earlier and prolonged longer. As a result of heat flux analysis, the evaporative heat loss can increase in the future than now and before. However, the convective heat loss and net long wave radiation from water surface decreased due to increased air temperature.

  • We construct 3D SV-wave velocity structure of the crust and the upper mantle beneath East Asia from Rayleighwave group-velocity measurements. For the construction of the SV-wave velocity model at 10 ~ 100 km depth, we used seismic data recorded at 321 broadband stations in Korea, Japan, and China. Rayleigh-wave group-velocity dispersion curves were obtained by using the multiple filtering technique in the period range from 3 to 150 s. High SV-velocity anomalies are imaged beneath the East Sea from 10 km depth to deeper depth, implying that the Moho beneath the East Sea is between at 10 ~ 20 km depth. We estimated the Moho beneath the Korean peninsula to be around 35 km based on the depth where a high-velocity anomaly is observed. The SV-wave velocity model shows prominent fast S-velocity anomalies near northeastern Japan, associated with the subducting Pacific plate. Low-velocity anomalies are found beneath the east coast of the Korean peninsula at 100 km depth, which may play a role in the formation of the Ulleungdo and the Ulleung basin. We observed low-velocity anomalies beneath the Yamato basin at 100 km depth as well, which may indicate the upwelling of fluid from the Pacific plate via dehydration at deeper depth.
